Hurricane Irene Open Entry

Our message board community has been talking about Hurricane Irene in this thread.

We thought thought we would open this entry for our readers to share real-time information on the Hurricane as needed.

I just ran across a neat use of Google maps by WRAL — by clicking here you will see how they are tracking damage & flooding reports by location.

Stay tuned for more throughout the day.

Dude from The Weather Channel in Nags Head is insane! Get out of the friggin ocean you moron!!

Yeah – he should’ve bailed out around 8am…

Just wish we could’ve gotten a bit more rain in Orange County… creeks are empty, and we didn’t even get 0.1 inches out of this one.

11:10-ish it appeared that things got bad real fast in Atlantic Beach

I just moved up to NYC a few weeks ago from VA Beach and I guess the hurricanes decided to follow.

Living in a basement apartment in Brooklyn half a block away from the evacuation zone; things might get interesting.

We had a real bad squall (60mph winds) come through on Thursday here in central VA. That mixed with the earthquake earlier is making a lot of stuff fall already, and technically the “hurricane doesn’t hit” until 2PM.

Statefans – Did you not hear from the Weather Channel guys? The guy on the beach is a trained professional.

    🙂

Storm is picking up. We have a real steady wind that’s bending trees and gusts that are starting to blow some little things.

Most of Pamlico County is under water. Though my parents (in Grantsboro) are dry still.

Lost power here in Clayton for a couple hours this morning but has been back on since then. Lots of limbs down in the backyard, but so far no trees. It looks like Irene is going to be around for a few more hours in this part of the state, crazy how the storm seems to be so much larger on the west side than the east when normally it is the opposite. Just saw the reporter from NBC reporting from Kill Devil Hills and it didn’t look so bad at the moment. I’m guessing things will deteriorate there very quickly in the next two-three hours.

Here in Eastern Craven County we have been without power since 1 am this morning. Wind still blowing with heavy rain as we endure the backside of Irene; I’m ready for her to kiss my backside.

“Most of Pamlico County is under water.”
The SE tributaries on the Pamlico River were up 13 ft. They have since receded 6 inches. Dwellings at Blounts Bay and creeks took on 1 ft. of water min.

I’m trying to get some phone pictures up for the site. Boathouse roofs barely above water.

I assume that as the storm moves farther to the NE (in reference to where it made landfall) the orientation of the winds will start to drive water out of the rivers and creeks…instead of pushing it in.

Red_Terrors, you’re up in “The Burg”, aren’t you? How’s it looking up there?

  15. Red_Terrors 08/27/2011 at 2:49 PM #

@Pride: Yeah, I’m up in North Stafford. Just raining here.

  16. NCStatePride 08/27/2011 at 2:55 PM #

We’ve gotten a few good gusts here in the country. Its around a gust ever couple minutes. Electricity keeps blinking down here, but with all the trees around the power lines, what can you expect…

This storm is like the UNC football scandal- it just won’t go away…..

  18. BJD95 08/27/2011 at 3:33 PM #

A total dud for us city folk, though. Just an occasional gust and not much rain just SW of Raleigh.

  19. Oldwolf 08/27/2011 at 3:38 PM #

in Cary, still getting strong wind gusts in bands – just lost a shutter off my house at 3:45

  20. BJD95 08/27/2011 at 3:48 PM #

Weird, I’m in Apex and nothing even close to that level of wind. Was in Raleigh for kid bday party earlier, more rain but still pretty yawn-inducing.

  21. NCStatePride 08/27/2011 at 3:54 PM #

Models I saw Friday said Raleigh was outside of the “39mph wind” zone.

The guy on TWC got streaked a while ago! The interesting thing about this storm is that the storm has dropped in pressure while over land! The eastern sections of the state are getting hammered with insane rainfall amounts. This morning the system looked really ragged on the west and south sides, but that improved rapidly and has continued to assault eastern areas with constant strong winds and flooding rains. This thing is just crawling NNE.

It is pretty bad over in Greenville. Lots of big trees down, not broken but up rooted. One neighbor has lost 4 of 6 pines in backyard. Other neighbor had a massive pine lay down right between our driveways. Water in the middle of the road up to my junk, cars with water coming up higher than the front of their hood. A lot of damage here in Greenville, NC. Thinking my mom’s place at Pine Knoll Shores is prolly gone by now (right across the road from the aquarium, ocean side).

Let’s see if the link works. This is from the deck. That would be the boathouse, there under water. Not good.

Chocowinity on Little Creek, off from Blounts Bay, on the Pamlico River.

Up here in Connecticut everyone had their games faces on at the package store. Lots of Johnnie Walker flying off the shelves. Gettin’ after it.
