It’s Friday, but still not over

It’s Friday, and Butch Davis is gone and Dick Baddour on his way out, but unfortunately for the Flagship, this is far from over. Specifically, questions remain regarding those 216 phone records.

Joe Ovies:

The phone records now appear to be caught in a semantics game. North Carolina technically reviewed Davis’ personal phone records, but did so with outside help and apparently not from within the compliance department. There is a question as to whether or not UNC should have Davis’ business related calls logged anyway. If he wasn’t using his university issued phone, how was he conducting business? As Art Chansky joked, he must be the greatest recruiter of all time if he doesn’t need a phone. Regardless, the Freedom of Information Act should be good enough to get the phone calls that were business related.

The specifics of what that counsel found aren’t known, but the university maintains there was nothing that would implicate Davis. Of course, all we can do is take them at their word. Considering how the Michael McAdoo thing played out, it’s understandable if folks aren’t so willing to do that.

I wonder what the guy that called into Ovies yesterday to suggest “Irvin” Meyer as the next head coach thinks about all the inconsistencies in the continuous BS they’re tossing on us over there.

In “discussions” with my UNC friends and family yesterday, beyond the general disgust at Holden Thorp for ruining the football program, most readily admitted they were shocked it happened, because they hadn’t really been following the story — “I haven’t really kept up with this like State fans have.” And that may seem strange, but unless they’ve frequented SFN or PackPride during the past year, then they probably truly didn’t realize there was any reason to be concerned.

Ditto for me too as still being one of those who’s willing to stick to the belief that all UNC will get from the NCAA is a slap on the wrist.

And as far as why it didn’t take the NCAA long to drop the hammer on GT is simple. They’re not UNC (or Auburn or Ohio State). Tech ain’t laid no golden eggs lately.

    Follow the money.

^The biggest difference is the GT investigation began in the fall of 2009 as opposed to last summer. There was also less to investigate. There’s a process.

Keep in mind, too, that the USC investigation lasted almost five years before punishment was handed down.

Greg Little is the link to the bball program since he played as a walkon in 2009 when all the football improprieties were taking place. Did he receive “help” from tutor Wiley as both a fball player and a bball player?

UNX fans will ultimately blame State fans for this whole mess. Well, I have a long memory. The David Thompson investigation was encouraged by Deano and Guthridge themselves. The NCAA investigator was Gutt’s college roommate and spent the weekend with Gutt in CH before driving to Raleigh the following Monday to investigate State. This was in David Thompson’s book, Skywalker. And who can forget the UNX journalism school grads at the N&O who drove the Valvano witchunt at the direction of the Daniels family. Six different entities investigated the Wolfpack bball program and all they found was players selling some shoes and some tickets. No academic fraud, no forged drug tests, no recruiting violations, etc. If UNX was investigated with the same diligence and by the same entities as our bball program in 1989-90, the flagship would be sunk and they would only field intramural athletics.

probably a “Wiley” for different occassions, like Barbie. Sorority Fun-time Barbie, Nerdie Barbie, etc.

  5. TAEdisonHokie 07/29/2011 at 2:33 PM #

BureauOfMines – GT did a MUCH better job of hiding their NCAA investigation. That made it seem like their investigation was much shorter.

    Here’s the actual timeline:

How Georgia Tech’s NCAA case unfolded
    http://www.ajc.com/sports/georgia-tech/how-georgia-techs-ncaa-1020485.html

The NCAA investigation of GT started on November 11, 2009, and ended on July 19, 2009…about a year and a half in length.

  6. VaWolf82 07/29/2011 at 2:45 PM #

VaWolf82 – I know for a fact that several ACC coaches were asked to tell the NCAA what they knew about UNC recruiting violations. I’m sorry you have a problem with that

I don’t have a problem with that. But unless these “several ACC coaches” were directly involved in the recruiting violations or have evidence to give the NCAA, then this was nothing more than a starting place for the NCAA to investigate.

It’s absolutely absurd to believe that the NCAA has EVIDENCE of recruiting violations and for some reason decided to not pursue it while at the same time chasing down one student-athlete who received $54 in improper benefits.

“So would we Statefans be on top of our own scandal if we were mired in one?”

Do the names Oblinger, Nielsen, or Easley ring a bell?

Regarding the unx fans not keeping up with the investigation, i have found that it is mainly the wal mart fans, and the super high class lawyers and rich boys. it seems as if all of the middle class, hard working carolina grads have kept up with it and do care about the reputation of their alma mater.

i grew up in a carolina household- my father, aunts, uncles and grandparents all went…i was the first NCSU grad in the family (this past May). my dad is one of the hard working, middle class carolina grads who said from day one that they should have never hired BMFD and nothing good would come of it…his carolina attorney friends (all of whom have large trust funds) seemed to disagree. he recently told me that he is ashamed of what has happened, and believes the football program should receive a massive punishment…this could be a direct result of his new found love of a real tailgating and football here at CF 🙂

when i really sit back and think about it, this is the case for a lot of people. the big money grads who have generations of inheritance seem to be the ones looking the other way, and turning their noses up to anyone who dares to mention the situation over there…and i do not even give those trailer living walmart fans the time of day

    anyone else experienced this?

    notagain,
both you and papa are to be commended!

I have discussed this with nary one UNC fan face to face.

Few of my UNC friends give a darn about sports (just by coincidence, i suppose). Nearly all of them just went to grad school there and are from out-of-state, so to speak. They didn’t endure an up-bringing tainted in light blue.

  10. Wulfpack 07/29/2011 at 4:00 PM #

Nobody has any idea what the NCAA will hand down. You can’t use USC, tOSU, or GT as benchmarks as this is a completely different situation. What happened yesterday will have no effect on what the NCAA does. I’m of the opinion it can only help UNC. Bottom line – nobody has any idea what’s on its way.

  11. imawolf 07/29/2011 at 4:36 PM #

I have heard that UNC was planning to let BMFD go as soon as they finished the capital campaign for the football stadium. The timeline for purchasing executive suites ended this past week and that they raised something like 42 million. Had they let him go prior to the end of this fund raising, they might not have been able to generate this kind of revenue. So actually 2.75 million is nothing in comparison. Oh, and yes, Butch knew it was coming as it was all part of the CASH generation plan.

  12. JSRy2k 07/29/2011 at 4:39 PM #

@tjfoose, Thanks for the proof, how quickly I forget. One’s memory need not be extensive when he is not lying and cheating 🙂
@notagain, Great insight. I haven’t spoken w/ anybody to corroborate but know in my heart your experience is par for the course…but I would add that there ought to be a difference between the wealthy who know the value of hard work and those who have had everything handed to them. The former should understand the value of integrity while the latter suffer from entitlement mindset with all its pomp and delusion.

  13. HPWolf 07/29/2011 at 4:46 PM #

Well..its obvious that the firing of Butch the professional liar and the forced resignation of backdoor were nothing more than an attempt to bring this train wreck to an end. To stop the bleeding and most importantly to get everyone to stop poking around, us included. I just can’t understand why no one other than us are calling for an independent investigation. The timing of these firings coupled with the 216 phone records, starvin marvin threatening to spill the beans, the multiple vehicles and tags, the silence of wiley, blake and the professor leaves no doubt that there is much more to know about this scandal. There must be some pretty damning information out there for UNC to can the coach a week before fall practice starts. UNC with this firing set this in motion knowing it would turn out very badly just to hide something much worse. Unless there is an independent investigation we will probably never know. We cannot let this rest. What do you bet that it has something to do with their golden child, UNC basketball.

A few things. I agree it is the Walmart fans who have been reluctant to follow this scandal. All of my friends who are UNC Alums (unfortunately there are many) have been pissed from the beginning. They have all wanted Butch gone. They believe and rightfully so that their name and brand was far more important than winning a few football games. My brother in law on the other hand, has been pleading with anyone who listen that this is no big thing. I love every minute of it!

  15. Lunatic Fringe 07/29/2011 at 5:01 PM #

Over/under for NCSU fans to find relevant nugget linking Butch IF they ever release the 216 list?

I am going with 45 minutes that we find a link that the UNC lawyers “missed”.

  16. Hungwolf 07/29/2011 at 5:06 PM #

As long as we are on theories. Two things happened recently, First the media quickly jumped all over the supposed admission by Davis that he was responsible for everything, one can only wonder if the UNC machine had set Davis up. Then Thorpe and the trustees were waiting to bounce on this as it would be better PR to fire him after he finally admitted he was responsible. Clearly they had talked before the official meeting.

Second: Davis stated he would release the phone records. Thorpe had to realize this was either an outright lie or it was a message Davis was sending to Thorpe and the trustees, that either they pay up or he’ll blow the lid off everything, the admin, the bball, etc.

I think Davis was sending a message, why else would Thorpe go out of his way at the press conference to clear Davis. We’ll never see the “complete phone records.” Those bastards thought nothing of throwing Doherty under the bus, why was Davis treated so differently? Baddour was interviewing bball players before they let Doherty go, never heard about Baddour interviewing any football players? I think Davis outratted/outhustled Thorpe and Baddour by about 2.7 million! Davis knew what he was dealing with and outfoxed the snakes!

Loved the editoral cartoon in Charlotte Observer today!

For me this is the issue. We cannot rest until the complete truth is known about the UNX violations (or until a special ceremony is held to name our b-ball center after Jimmy V. We need to publicly acknowledge his contribution to NCSU and the ACC).

Listening to the Loose Cannons radio show just now, 3pm West Coast time. It’s a west coast show from LA, and even THEY were talking about UNX. Petros Papadakis was on for a bit and his speculation was that the firings came down to academics, saying that mosts admins are willing to turn a blind eye to athletic issues, but when it bleeds into the academics, the get squirrely. Looks like the tutor prong may be the strongest of all. If they have any balls UNX will keep cleaning house and check into the bball program, but I kind of doubt it.

  20. TAEdisonHokie 07/29/2011 at 5:38 PM #

VaWolf82 – I’m getting pretty tired of basically being called a liar. You also responded in the same basic way to my nearly identical comments on PackPride.

I’m going to be real honest here…you don’t know what the heck you’re talking about in regards to UNC recruiting violations and what the NCAA knows or doesn’t know.

    Find someone else to stalk.

Guys the only thing the 216 records can confirm is Butch’s hate for Carowina Blue. All those calls were to his fashion designers on how to implement more navy.

ncsufan13, thanks for the NPR link. wufwuf1 should go down in the annals of blogging for his work on the McAdoo paper. Such a perfect storm with such a perfect result.

“Do the names Oblinger, Nielsen, or Easley ring a bell?”

Sure they do. And IMHO the biggest difference between us and UNC-CHeat is that State folks were the ones hollering the loudest and longest to clean the house of these louts.

  25. lawful 07/29/2011 at 8:59 PM #

VaWolf: I’m assuming as the NCAA can’t compel Davis to release his personal cell phone records, that they don’t have them. Does UNC have them or not?
