DTH: one UNC football player got 93 parking tickets corresponding to 9 different plates and at least 5 different cars

Full story.

Also, this WRAL article has loads of good stuff, including these two paragraphs.  Can anyone understand the second paragraph bolded below?  If you do, please post an explanation in the responses.

One of the cars, a grey dodge charger, is registered to Gregory Lamar Little who is Greg Little’s father. Wide receiver Little, who attended Hillside High School in Durham, NC, was declared “permanently ineligible” by the NCAA in October for accepting an estimated $4,952 in benefits.

The VIN number associated with the car registered to the Little family is also listed as the VIN number for three other license plate numbers that received parking tickets. The car with that VIN number got at least 16 tickets. Tickets were issued to that VIN number with three different license plates, including one 24-period where it got two tickets and had two different plates.

Stay tuned.  No doubt more bombshells to come.

7pm Update: Joe Ovies talks “big picture” about why the parking tickets matter (WRAL.com). Meanwhile, the media appears to still be pouring through the phone records, which may make the parking violations seem like nothing more than an unpleasant dream.

Yeah, is anyone checking to see if the basketball players have racked up any tickets (ie. the Henson pic with the boot on the car)?

Logic and reason would tell you if you are in college and get a parking ticket it stings because of limited funds so you make sure you do not get another one. Everything that I have read is that the stars of the program were apparently given cars to drive and not responsible for parking tickets which explains the multible offenses.

    Blood … I want it.

    UNx = Frauds

They are using tax / state money for their appeals and such. If nothing comes of this from the BOG + other politicals then … ugh.

    Rally ’round the cheater.

the only reasonable explanation I can come up with for 3 plates is a temporary 30 day tag, then a regular plate when the temporary expires and then a vanity plate. not sure but I think they give you a regular tag while you wait for a vanity tag.
that said I hope it’s something shady, and it manages to pull the bball squad in as well. I’m more interested in how the players got to register for classes with the unpaid violations. if that isn’t preferential treatment I’m not sure what is.

This is fun and all but the NCAA investigators have had access to this information. If this is NEWS to them, then we should all be worried because they did not dig very deep (which is likely the case).

Circumstantial evidence screams violations but no smoking gun on the surface. If we’ve learned anything over the past few scandals, you need not only a dead hooker in the trunk but to get caught red handed putting her in there.

“Students must pay their tickets, or arrange a payment plan, in order to register for classes…”

See the loophole? I’m “sure” the players were all on a payment plan. UNC won’t get busted for LOIC apparently they were slightly smarter about cheating than USC.

WRAL had some great coverage last night… basically several interviews of UNC students complaining about how difficult it is to park and that getting tickets is an afterthought. They mentioned needing to pay the tickets before graduation (supposedly)… but nothing about the different plates, etc.

per DTH: “All of the cars included in the records belonged to the student, a parent, a grandparent or a fellow student, according to the release.”

This leaves a gaping black hole doesn’t it? What happens if some nice person or entity let’s a player ‘borrow’ their fancy car for an extended period of time? A parking ticket to that vehicle would not be released with this batch of records, right, because there’s no way to tie one of the 11 players to it. Hopefully someone in the media is following up and requesting additional records (if they think there happens to be such nice people who are persons of interest to the investigation).

44: NCAA doesn’t need Proof beyond a reasonable doubt…its more like a preponderance standard…more likely than not…when it comes to a vague allegation such as lack of institutional control or failurento promote an atmosphere of compliance. I would think its a totality of the circumstances sort of thing and each little piece of poo thrown not the pile makes more problems for UNC.

I have a question about these parking tickets… How many of them were outstanding BEFORE the date that the media requested them, but paid WHILE Carolina fought their release?

Basically, once they knew this stuff was going public, did they scramble to pay their outstanding tickets?

Not expecting an answer. Just pointing out a question that I think demands an answer.

I am pretty sure that Pryor technically owned (or was legally leasing) cars he drove at OSU. It does not mean he was not getting benefits (say with a $1 lease).

Just read the following recent entries on Twitter:

    “ghostOFjimmyV Macgruber
Owner of dealership where UNC players were getting their cars is in prison for money laundering !!!! Bout to get real on the Hill !!!”

    ….and….

    “ghostOFjimmyV Macgruber
This “dealer” was giving out the tags unc football players. Multiple tags given out by a convicted felon.”

    Back-up to my post above….

Player’s license plates linked to incarcerated dealer
    http://www.wralsportsfan.com/unc/story/9745766/

    QUOTE:

“Raleigh, N.C. — An investigation into documents released by the University of North Carolina links several of the license plate numbers provided on a list of former and current UNC football players’ parking tickets between March 2007 and August 2010 to a dealer currently serving time in a federal prison for money laundering.”

Where is the reference to “the payment plan” cause I did not see that when I looked up the rules on their website yesterday. If it’s “not written” in the policy, then they are in violation of their own policy by extending it to a payment plan…
