Russell Wilson can’t make a decision

“It’s a significant portion he would have to return,” said Marc Gustafson, the Rockies’ senior director of player development.

Gustafson also said it would be difficult for Wilson, who is struggling offensively with the Tourists, to return to baseball if he played football this fall.

“It would be hard for him to come back to baseball because he would miss a lot of games and have had so much time away,” Gustafson said.

“It’s an interesting scenario,” Gustafson said. “He’s a premium athlete who doesn’t know what he wants to do. Until we know something different, we consider him to be a baseball player only.

“Would we be disappointed if he chose to play football? Yes, we would.”

Hopefully the people who can’t seem to understand why Tom O’Brien made the decision to not allow star quarterback Russell Wilson’s return in 2011 are starting to get it. Russell has reached the point in his career where playing both sports severely hurts his chances of advancing professionally in either sport and at the same time puts the organizations that have supported him up until this point in limbo.

Russell wanting to play football this Fall is perfectly acceptable. However, why didn’t Russell just delay signing a pro baseball contract to remain enrolled in school, play baseball for NC State with part-time participation in Spring football so that Tom O’Brien and Mike Glennon, who graduated and could have left NC State play immediately this season, would know exactly where Russell stands on playing college football this Fall? What was the hurry to sign a pro baseball contract especially when his baseball career up until that point was a struggle while he had flourished on the grid iron?

Even if his size would eventually keep him out of the NFL, then he could have made more money playing football in the Canadian Football League in the long-term than being a minor leaguer that never makes the Major League.

I hope he plays football this Fall. I will pull for his success at Auburn or Wisconsin or wherever he ends up. However, Russell’s continued indecisiveness shows exactly why Tom O’Brien made the right choice in this situation.

It would be interesting if TOB’s decision ends up forcing Wilson to make a decision to stay with baseball. It might end up being the turning point in his career either way and helping him out in the long run.

It really is forcing him to confront the weight of the decisions he is refusing to make.

This is such a heartbreak to me. Russell Wilson is a true class act and what I’d want everyone here to be, however, you’re absolutely right in how his decision-making here makes TOB’s decision necessary.

I just hope RW discovers his inner Pujols the next couple of weeks and makes this decision easy.

RW’s decision making in pressure situations is what cost us a couple games last year. Needless-to-say, it’s not his strong point.

It is time for RW, to make a decision, as this back and forth business, is not looking good for him. Definitely not something the Rockies are wanting to play with. Good luck RW, but please make up your mind. It would be in your best interest.

Agree 100% with you guys for once. Never understood why people were getting all over O’Brian’s case about this decision. Wilson was a class act and I will cheer for whatever team he ends up with, but he’s showing his age (or lack thereof) right now.

I wish him the best though.

If you’ve ever wathced him play in Asheville (I’ve caught about 10 games as I live here) this guy is nothing to write home about. Batting a team low .216 and not hitting the the ball hard or seeing the ball very well. His defense is average at best and this is the next to lowest league in the minors. Cant’ see a pro baseball career for him unless he REALLY turns it around. I do see why he’s thingking about more football as it appears (at least at this time to him I’m sure) a better way out. Good luck where ever you go.

“…why didn’t Russell just delay signing a pro baseball contract to remain enrolled in school, play baseball for NC State…”

Hadn’t RW already played 4 years of baseball at State?

Looking at this from Russell’s position: I’m sure he loves playing both sports, and it’s hard to give one up. He’s still not that old – even when I graduated college I wasn’t making the best decisions in the world, so I’ll forgive him some indecision. In many ways, this isn’t that different from watching professional athlete’s try to decide and retire. Some make the decision and stick to it, like Barry Sanders, but most painfully draw it out and have a hard time making a decision, like Brett Favre.

Do I think TOB made the right decision, but there’s certainly room to debate it, depending on how valuable you think Russell is to the football team.

O’Brien made the correct decision. That said, you can make the right choice and not be happy about it.

I wish Wilson nothing but the best wherever his football or baseball careers take him. I feel that NC State is very lucky to count him among our alumni.

Russel’s a great kid and I wish him only the best. That said, I think he has been a little self serving through his whole career at State and less than the “team player” that would have lifted him to the all-time-greats category in my book.

TOB made the right decision for the long term benefit of State football. It took someone of high character, fortitude and self confidence to make that decision. We were fortunate to have Russel Wilson while we did, but I think we are even more fortunate to have Tom O’Brian.

  11. Lunatic Fringe 05/25/2011 at 10:03 AM #

TOB made the right decision period.

RW should not make any decision that involves him giving money back. The fact is that he has yet to give a full year to one sport his whole life, but he is getting paid for MLB.

He should move on with MLB than look to potential CFL if that does not work out, but what ever decision he makes he should do it professionally.

I miss the college life too, but time to move on. You only have a small window to get paid in pro sports while your body still allows you to perform.

    Perfectly stated, and agree 100%.

TOB made the right call for Wolfpack football. He had to know he’d get a ton of flack from the fans and media, but he made the tough call.
I’ve got a ton of respect for Coach O.

Finally. It’s what I’ve been tellin’ ya for months. Now, read into what Gusafson is really saying.

Will the Rockies let Wilson go play football this August or earlier? Hell yes. Let go, being the key phrase, as in release.

Unless Wilson is completely off his rocker, with another year left on his contract, I don’t see this happening at all.

A thought has crept up recently that I can’t shed. Was Wilson half way expecting to be taken in the NFL draft? And because he wasn’t, did that precipitate this anxiety to try and showcase one more year of college football?

See, I don’t get his decision making process at all should he decide to flip his contract into the wind. So much better to earnestly concentrate on learning the professional game of baseball while a club has interest and go the free agency route for football when they lose it.

COWDOG, interesting questions. But did Russell enter his name in the NFL draft? I don’t recall ever seeing any articles about that, because if he did, surely it would have been all over the local news.

I understand O’Brien decision. Worst case scenario is he let russell have his way and glennon transfers save his two years and then you find in the fall that RW can’t play football, then you’re left with Tobias Harris(?) at QB and then everyone puts on their 20/20 hindsight special made glasses and ask, ‘What was TOB doing in the spring when he left RW linger in the back ground?’

Thats what the media does, they will write a story if you do and write a story if you don’t. You can’t worry about what everyone will say because you’re going to be criticized no matter what. You have to do what you feel is best for the team. That right now is focus on the team we have now and develop Glennon.

If Glennon struggles and RW goes to Wisconsin and have them ontop of the Big 10(12) then so what. Everyone will tell you have stupid you were to let him go and you have to have thick skin. Personally I would tell anyone questioning the decision to go kiss it. Its a no win situation and if you are sitting here acting like there is a clear and obvious decision to be made here you either don’t understand all the parameters or talking out of your tail. I like the decision and i think its funny how RW is getting hyped up to be this heisman candidate as soon as he leaves NCSU.

TOB made the right call – unless MG is Jay Davis. We will all second guess him if that’s the case…and rightfully so.

  18. TheCOWDOG 05/25/2011 at 10:51 AM #

I’m pretty sure he didn’t have to enter his name for the draft, Bradley.

“…why didn’t Russell just delay signing a pro baseball contract to remain enrolled in school, play baseball for NC State…”

I would say it was about the money. Signing the baseball contract was a financial decision. I hope this works out for Russell. As good as he has been as a college QB, his chances of playing QB in the NFL are pretty slim because of his size. I would imagine that fact made taking the money a bit easier. I really think we could have gone 12-0 this fall with RW at QB. I still think 10-2 is very attainable.

“I really think we could have gone 12-0 this fall with RW at QB. I still think 10-2 is very attainable.”

Wow, whatever you’ve got I’d like to try some of that.

I still don’t think it was the right decision by TOB. I’ll probably remain in the minority on that right up until Glennon has his first multiple interception game in a loss. I don’t want to be “right” on that, but I anticipate that when that happens many will be on here (and other forums) wishing we still had Wilson.

I understand the Rockies perspective — they’re paying him to play. He is an employee and his participation in an outside activity could threaten his physical health and thus his ability to do the job for which he is contracted. I can see them being very upset.

I think we should have left the door open for RW. We should have given him a chance to compete and see if he was better — after setting realistic expectations that we’re probably changing the offense to tailor to other kids’ abilities. It may not have even worked out with the Rockies, but we wouldn’t have alienated one of our all time greats at the position.

It will really sadden me to watch Wilson suit up for another school. It will particularly hurt me to watch a school like Auburn or Wisconsin (who have more than enough talent) win big on the back of RW. 🙁

  22. Tampa-Pack 05/25/2011 at 11:32 AM #

RW’s decision would likely be much easier if he was hitting in the neighborhood of .300. Truth is he is struggling and probably looking for other options. Like someone said above, why the rush if he wasn’t sure. Play FB and BB at State this upcoming season, and sign the contract then (unless he felt he peaked in his baseball attractiveness). But as someone also said a career as an NFL backup of CFL player is more lucrative than a minor league ball player for life….

I wish him the best in whatever he decides. He’s a good kid, must be a tough situation to be in….

  23. tann84 05/25/2011 at 11:58 AM #

@Ryebread Even if Glennon throws multiple picks in a loss, TOB still made the right decision. The truth is you can’t go all in for one year. You’re trying to build a program that last. So if you leave the door open for Wilson and Glennon leaves what do you do then? Even if RW does play in the fall then what, the next year you have no highly touted QB to come and take the reigns.

It is short-sighted to keep the door open for Wilson and you want your players focused. If I’m a WR why am I going to put my all in trying to get in sync with Glennon in the spring when I would have to adjust to a new QB in the fall? You want to keep continuity with the team and timing down between the QB and WR. You don’t have Owen Spencer chasing balls back there this year.

You don’t know how well Glennon will turn out, no one does but this route is best for the future and long-term sustainability of the program than the RW route. Its about weighing the risks, pros and cons; not just some blind allegiance to a good QB.

I hope that RW doesn’t go to Auburn, I really don’t think he’ll be able to play with those SEC defenses.

    TOB made the right decision.

Seems that the right call for Russell is to commit to Bball through his contract. Collect the cash and then, if it’s not working out, hit up tryouts for US or Canadian Pro Fball. How hard is this, really?

I get that he cannot play CFB after this year (5yr clock runs out) but I don’t see how in the world another year of CFB really helps him. Pro football talent hunts are voracious. If you’re good, they won’t forget that after one year.

  25. packfan1 05/25/2011 at 12:07 PM #

I think Wilson should have agreed to be Glennon’s backup this year. He could have played out the entire year of baseball without having the pressure of being sharp when he came back to NCSU for football. Then several games into the season, he would be ready to play when Glennon gets injured or is having a bad game. If that situation were to happen he could be the “hero” and possibly be the starter for the rest of the season.
