N&O: Wilson Didn’t Want To Leave

It seems that Brett Favre Russell Wilson wants Wolfpack fans to know that he didn’t “want to leave.” To me, this situation has some similarity to the Favre/Packers soap opera of a few seasons ago. It’s the whole – “will he or won’t he”, while the entire team is left in limbo.

If Russell Wilson truly didn’t want to leave, then he should have committed to the team and been present for spring practice.  There are no doubt varying opinions on this, but I support Coach O’Brien’s actions. Russell Wilson is an amazing talent, but football is a team sport and you can’t leave the entire team hostage to what one player might or might not do.

About SMD

SMD graduated from NC State at a time when beating UNC-CH in both major revenue sports was a regular occurrence. This was well before a time when I could express my frustrated attempts at being a writer on the "internets." When I'm not talking about the Pack, I'm probably arguing politics.

I love Russell Wilson. So in no way can I disparage him.

However the same rules that assisted him in the past are now working against him. When he played baseball but was committed to coming back, he remained the starter no matter what. But not that he is not committed to coming back but MG is, MG is the starter. Nothing MG did in the last two years could have him overtake Wilson because Wilson was definitely coming back. Now the roles are reversed.

we may not have had the best offensive line in the country but i strongly feel we are building that to be a strength..

I’m divided on this issue. I can see it from both sides I guess. The team was stuck in a hard spot, not knowing what Wilson’s plans were this year. If the team did not commit to Glennon, I think he would have ended up transferring, and then if Wilson decided to play baseball all year, then we would have been stuck without a QB at all.

But on the other side, Wilson has been the heart and soul of our team for 3 years. I think he might have earned the opportunity to come back and compete for the job if that was his decision.

TOB has made his call, and now he has to live with it. We have WR problems, and maybe O-line problems, so Glennon might be a sitting duck out there this year and then we can all dream of Wilson dancing around and saving the day play after play.

Or maybe Glennon’s drop back passing sets the world on fire and we win 10 games and the ACC championship.

I support Coach 100% in this. Wilson simply chose baseball over State football and that’s ok. Glennon is the qb now — let’s all move forward.

Wilson’s lack of committment is the sole reason he will not play this fall. How hard is that to understand?

We need to get 100% on board with Mike Glennon. Any fans that start to show their arse this fall when there is a turnover, sack, whatever will bring on my instant wrath. Living in the past is not an option unless you simply mean to sow discord.

RWs dad was sick when RW was drafted….His family was facing unknown times ahead…His dad died a few days after the draft…RW took a nice payday to ensure his Mom and Baby sister were looked after….We screwed over one of the finest young men at NC State I have had the pleasure of knowing…..anything else is just BS

To all those talking about all of Wilson’s mistakes last season, I think you are a bit off base.

His interception percentage was much better last year than in 2009:

    2009: 11 interceptions in 378 passing attempts (2.91%)
    2010: 14 interceptions in 527 passing attempts (2.66%)

His sack percentage was also slightly better:

    2009: 30 sacks in 378 passing attempts (7.9%)
    2010: 39 sacks in 527 passing attempts (7.4%)

Fumble data is not as easy to find, but I think this is right, in which case he was again better in 2010:

2009: 7 fumbles, 2 lost (recovered 3 on his own) in 511 opportunities (408 dropbacks (378 passing attempts, 30 sacks) and 103 rushing attempts)

2010: 6 fumbles, 2 lost (recovered 2 on his own) in 709 opportunities (566 dropbacks (527 passing attempts, 39 sacks) and 143 rushing attempts)

A lot of his rate stats were down (e.g., completion percentage, yards per attempt, passer rating), but that doesn’t fit the mistakes label some are using here.

The whole offense was on Wilson’s shoulders last season. He made some mistakes for sure, but he actually made fewer than in 2009 when put in context. He also accounted for more yards and TDs in 2010.

Calculated sack rate incorrectly, but can’t edit the post for some reason. Should be:

    2009: 30 sacks in 378 passing attempts (7.4%)
    2010: 39 sacks in 527 passing attempts (6.9%)

    Same result.

    One more time. Should be:

    2009: 30 sacks in 408 dropbacks (7.4%)
    2010: 39 sacks in 566 dropbacks (6.9%)

    Same result.

Wish the edit function worked for me…

It’s funny – the regulars around here all pretty much agree TOB made the right decision.

I see some unknown names all making a case for RW. It is obvious you have never played football or have a clue about teamwork.

Dont get me wrong, I am a huge RW fan. Last year when people were calling for RW to sit and MG to play, I was the first to defend RW. It is now time to move on and let MG have his shot. IF RW committed to football, was there for the spring, and would be there for fall practice, then I would be in support. One cannot be a part time football player.

^So we’ve reached the point where anyone who doesn’t agree doesn’t have a clue? Nice.

Also, FYI, there are regulars here who don’t post a lot.

^tau: I too have noticed that everyone who voices disagreement with this decision gets an ad hominem attack in response, both here and at other sites.

If you disagree, then “You’ve never played team sports before … you obviously don’t know how football works … you must have never been in a leadership position … if you are taking RW’s side in this, you must prefer superstars over teams…”

If you have to resort to those kinds of inaccurate generalizations, then you are on the wrong side of the argument.

TOB didn’t have a choice. He made the right decision for the team. I would love to be starter for a D1 football program and miss spring practice and summer workouts. This a team sport.
Russell was fantastice and I will miss him greatly but TOB made the best decision for team.

It appears Russell is a hot commodity. SEC bound?

I support coach 100% on this one. What is he supposed to do? Keep an eye all summer or Russell’s batting average and wait for him until the fall to see if he is doing well enough in baseball to hang around or come back to the back-up sport.? (By the way he is batting 226 for the year 296 for the last ten games)

Thanks for everything Russell your are an all around great young man and I do not blame you for wanting to have options but the State team needed commitment so they could plan and get ready for next season.

We stabbed Valvano in the back and it was 20 years and counting of bad luck. I hope we have not doomed our football program to the same! I can’t wait to see RW play! Hope it’s in South Carolina. It will be cool having two teams to pull for I guess.
