Gottfried makes big splash; Torian Graham chooses the Pack

How fitting is it that our Monday morning topic for discussion was this entry on basketball recruiting?

“It’s close to home and there was just something about it,” Graham told Scout.com. “It’s local and my family will be around. I can be close to my mom. She’s sick and that’s important to me.”

Graham, a five-star prospect, said he received a call from the N.C. State staff the first day they were hired.

Graham is rated as a consensus Top 25 national player. So, the Wolfpack’s 2012 class now includes a pair of backcourt players both ranked in the Top 75 of the country – Tyler Lewis at point guard (click for more good news) and Torian Graham at shooting guard.

Despite commitments from two guards already, some people who follow recruiting in the area believe the Wolfpack still has a better than average shot at landing national Top 10 combo guard, Rodney Purvis who recently de-committed from Louisville.

Additionally, Coach Gottfriend offered TJ Warren a scholarship this week and we are discussing it here. Warren is one of the Top 10 small forwards in the country and is the son of former Wolfpack great, Tony Warren.

This is just a FANTASTIC START for Coach Gottfried and his new version of the NC State Basketball program!!

9:30pm Update: More from ACCNow (Link)

The first day new N.C. State basketball coach Mark Gottfried was allowed to talk to recruits, he called Torian Graham.

The timing of the call in early April made a big impression on Graham, one of the top recruits in the country who made a verbal commitment to the Wolfpack on Monday.

“He told me I was their top priority,” Graham said. “That meant a lot to me.”

Graham, a 6-4 shooting guard at Raleigh’s Word of God, is rated as the 25th-best player in the class of 2012 by Scout.com and 45th by ESPN’s Dave Telep. He averaged about 19 points per game as a junior.

Gottfried, who was hired on April 5 to replace Sidney Lowe, has four scholarships available for this season and one more will open up after the 2011-12 season.

The Wolfpack is also pursuing Graham’s prep teammate T.J. Warren, a forward, and Graham’s close friend, guard Rodney Purvis of Raleigh’s Upper Room Academy.

“I’m going to get [Purvis] and a couple of more,” Graham said. “I can recruit now.”

Graham exchanged Twitter posts with Purvis on Monday about teaming up for the Wolfpack for the 2012-13 season. Purvis, who is ranked as one of the top 10 players in the class of ’12, recently decommitted to Louisville and opened up his recruiting options.

Graham, who’s from Durham and played his first two high school seasons at Hillside, joins Tyler Lewis, a point guard from Lewisville, as commitments from the class of ’12.

“Torian Graham has the DNA of a scorer,” said Telep, who’s ESPN’s top recruiting analyst. “The Pack is going to need a guy who can get a bucket and he’s certainly able to create scoring chances off the dribble or as a shooter.”

Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Georgetown and Rutgers were among the schools in pursuit of Graham.

Glad Tyler Lewis chose to come to State, not just to play for Sid. He seems to be helping encourage his friends on the AAU circuit to come here also. Good job Coach G and staff! Let’s springboard this committment into some recruiting momentum!

I see there was no mention of this news from either Goodman or Parrish this morning. If Turgeon had just landed a 5 star recruit, they would both be wetting themselves with excitement, and would be writing full page articles on it.

By the way, I see Goodman is leaving Fox to join his buddy Parrish at CBS sports. I guess this way they can find creative ways to satisfy each other.

    Nice pick up

Decent offers from Miami, VaTech, Georgetown Clemson and Rutgers

Stick that in your crack pipe & puff on it Jeff Goodman as well as the talking heads at ESPN.

Gotta love this kids attitude-“I can recruit now”. Just gotta love it. Lots of excitement building around NCSU basketball.

Goodman wrote an article recently where he graded the coaching hires and gave us a C…the problem is not the grade so much as its the reasoning…

    http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebasketball/story/College-basketball-coaching-changes-graded-042211

as his reasoning, he mentions something about Coach G wanting to get rid of the April recruiting period and comparing this to Yow’s problems w/ Gary’s lack of recruiting…implying that Coach G wasn’t going to recruit well…not only did it make no sense, but it looks stupid now more than ever…

Also, he rated Mizzous hire of Haith as a B-…’nuff said…

  6. packof81 05/17/2011 at 10:11 AM #

This is an encouraging start. Stay tuned.

  7. packgrad2000 05/17/2011 at 10:24 AM #

Yeah, a giving Missouri a B- for hiring Haith is pretty laughable…is there anyone who takes him seriously anymore? I’m telling you, national sportswriters/radio hosts have to be the biggest fraternity of douchebags around, with a few exceptions.

re: Uchebu. I have no inside info but at the Charlotte WPC Caravan Coach alluded to him just not being a good fit and that his de-committing was best for both sides.

  9. Lunatic Fringe 05/17/2011 at 3:10 PM #

Personally, I would rather get Faust, de-commit from Maryland, over Uch for next season. His father did mention that NC State was recruiting him.

Btw…I think we actually have 5 ships for next year even with an addition of Faust. The pull of NBA may just be too much for CJ next year.

  10. Wolfy__79 05/17/2011 at 3:32 PM #

i don’t think we nor he will really know if he’s (cjl) is ready for the nba until we see the product on the floor.. i’d just hate to see another one of ours leave too early!

i’m not a fan of miami’s brand of basketball at all under haith.. but i won’t say that he’s a terrible coach either. i think missouri took a calculated risk with haith.. i think he can be successful there.

NC STATE gets a C? now i’m as biased as any STATE fan but really a C?? that’s crazy, i think the assessment is a bit premature on his part.. i only add our asst coaching staff plus of course MG makes it atleast an -A! we will be able to tell alot better come season tip.. of course, getting recruits like this don’t hurt my -A at all!!

  11. wolfpackdawg 05/17/2011 at 4:17 PM #

Any issues with Torian making the grades?

  12. Wolfy__79 05/17/2011 at 4:19 PM #

^he’s got a year to get it together if not.. but he’d get a you’ve got to be kidding me from me!!!

Obviously DY needs to be fired for this “panic hire”.

  14. VaWolf82 05/17/2011 at 8:22 PM #

I think that “the letter” pretty much proves that DY was in panic mode. But I don’t see how her frame of mind will effect Gott’s tenure.

  15. Wolfy__79 05/17/2011 at 9:57 PM #

often times there’s a panic in real time situations but i think the result is fine. “the letter,” i have heard alot of STATE fans talking about this and mainly b/c our hopes were high. she did her job imo. i didn’t think too much of the letter and haven’t given it much attention. of course, i was hopeful but more of a wait & see what we get type.

  16. GAWolf 05/18/2011 at 6:53 AM #

I disagree, VAWolf. As an “expectation-temperer,” the letter worked wonderfully. it seemed quite calculated to me.

  17. VaWolf82 05/18/2011 at 8:20 AM #

Maybe. But I think that getting turned down by Shaka lowered expectations all by itself.

  18. ShavlikLeague 05/18/2011 at 9:48 AM #

GAWolf, I couldn’t agree more. Expectation management is all that it was. Frame things for what they are and communicate the reality of the situation…and at the same time, talk some people in off the ledge.

My gut feeling is that we are going to look back at getting turned down by Shaka and view it as a blessing in disguise.

Coach Gott adds 6’8″, 235 lb power forward from Belguim:

WEst Coaster, I particularly like what the coach had to say about him:¨This is a tremendous opportunity for Tom,” said Canarias Basketball Academy Director and coach Rob Orellana. “He has put himself in this position by working as hard as he has this year. North Carolina State is getting a tremendous kid with an unmatched work ethic. His ability to stretch the defense past the three-point line and make plays at his size will be a valuable asset for Coach Gottfried.”

The key phrase for me is UNMATCHED WORK ETHIC. Whenever a coach says that, he means it. Like most of the posters, I’ve been loving all of the good offseason news and it is making me actually look forward to basketball season.

  21. Bowlpack 05/18/2011 at 6:56 PM #

    AppPack 14^

When I hear “unmatched work ethic” I think big guy with limited athletic ability that plays physical.

  22. West Coaster 05/18/2011 at 7:15 PM #

    Bowlpack –
Anyone ever tell you that you’re a glass-is-half-empty kind of guy?

  23. JSRy2k 05/18/2011 at 8:45 PM #

Interesting while all us fans are worried about guard depth that the staff makes a late signing of a PF.

  24. chriscgray 05/18/2011 at 10:59 PM #

Look, one thing we are missing is we didn’t just recruit a big man which we will eventually need, but we recruited a shooter also. We don’t really have many good shooters on the team, its pretty much Wood and everyone else is inconsistent. So what you have in all three guys coming in is the ability to add more consistency from 3pt range. Good move Gottfried for getting your guy for the future and not just a stop gap for one year. We got to get the right guys for all four years, not to just solve a one year depth problem at PG.
