ESPN’s Dinich skewers Butch Davis

A must-read,  brilliantly conceived and flawlessly exectuted.

Some highlights:

He didn’t know about former assistant John Blake’s reputation as a sly recruiter.

He didn’t know about the trips his players took and the thousands of dollars of improper benefits they received that cost seven players their eligibility last year and 14 players at least one game.

And he didn’t know about defensive end Quinton Coples’ mind-bogglingly bad decision to attend a post-draft party earlier this month in Washington, D.C.

and

The time-tested Clueless Defense has simultaneously been the biggest reason to fire Davis — a lack of institutional control. Coples’ situation is the latest example. Despite all of the negative publicity and angst the NCAA investigation has caused the university, despite a new “sign-out” policy to help keep track of players, Davis still can’t keep his players from being lured into the NFL life prematurely. Instead, it’s one of his biggest selling points to recruits, and it’s those talented recruits who are making the bad decisions.

It all starts at the top.

and my favorite

North Carolina is oozing with NFL talent, recruited well enough to contend for a national title last season, and yet the Tar Heels have nothing to show for it but another eight-win season, an NCAA investigation and a 0-4 record against NC State.

Heather basically just slammed the door on any future relationship with UNC athletics.

True, but even if she could claim to have known something was going down with the NCAA, the door on that relationship is still slammed shut.

But maybe she does feel empowered to write such a strongly-worded article because she knows something.

Either way, I LOVED the article!

Ever since he came to C.H. to coach the Heels football, from Kenan to Carter-Finley to TOB he’s lost them all, we ain’t seen anything like him in any amusement hall, that deaf, dumb and blind coach sure plays some mean football.
He stands like a statue, he’s part of the machine, players always in trouble, he never plays it clean, he stretches incredulity as all the standards fall, that deaf, dumb and blind coach sure plays a mean football.
He’s an obfuscation wizard, there has to be a cause, an obfuscation wizard who ignores all of the NCAA’s laws.
How do you think he does it? (I don’t know) What makes his players so dumb?
He ain’t got no distractions, can’t hear any buzzers or bells, can’t see red flags waving, what’s that rancid smell? Always wants a replay, he claims no fault at all, that deaf, dumb and blind coach sure plays a mean football.

Now I don’t care what anybody says…that’s funny.

I’m sure more stanza material is being generated right now. Probably enough for a whole rock opera.
