TBJ: Red seats are a-coming…

What better time for a little enhancement to the RBC Center then right when we get a new basketball coach?

Link to Triangle Business Journal

Die-hard North Carolina State University basketball fans who never liked the “red” color of the seats at the RBC Center can now rejoice. The Centennial Authority plans to spend $1.6 million to replace the seats in the arena during the off-season.

Longtime followers of the RBC Center will remember that the color of the seats caused quite a brouhaha when the facility first opened. Seems that their dark red – or wine red – color wasn’t exactly what was expected among those who bleed that bright Wolfpack red.

The job of picking the color of the seats this time around primarily will fall to authority member Michael Weeks, who heads up the construction committee, in consultation with NCSU Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director David Horning.

The Centennial Authority is the landlord of the RBC Center, where the Wolfpack basketball team and the Carolina Hurricanes hockey club play their home games

Our younger readers won’t remember some of the unnecessary struggles that came along with the original construction of the arena that was followed by the selection of seats that did not conform to NC State University’s color official color scheme.

Debbie Yow has already begun a program to ‘State-ize’ the RBC Center for NC State home games. Surrounding the court with seats that are the actual school colors will be a huge step in the right direction.

While we are talking about issues surrounding playing at home…you can click here for some work just done by ESPN regarding home field advantage on the football field.

For the record, it says State has the 10th worst home field advantage, based on the metrics they are using in their calculations. Then again, it says Ohio State has the 8th worst home field advantage.

Best home field advantage – Boise State…duh. followed by Baylor, Hawaii, Toledo, and Indiana. I need to look at this guy’s numbers.

Worst home field advantage – Western Kentucky, New Mexico, and Florida International.

Best road advantage – Northwestern, Bowling Green, and Tulane. Seriously?

Worst road advantage – New Mexico State, Iona, and SMU.

Interesting findings. I would like to look at some of the guys numbers to see how he came up with the results.

there are plenty of asses in the Dean Dome. As a matter of fact thats all you see if you go there for a game. All that play on the court for that school instead of sitting in the stands are in fact asses also.

    My two cents:
I recommend painting it, putting in seats, pretty up the place and then burn it to the ground. Go back to Reynolds!

We need to build a 15,000 seat arena on Centennial campus that’s loud as fuck and cramped.

    Dogbreath,

First, has your therapist talked to you about being so timid and NOT expressing yourself for fear that others might not take you seriously?

That is a GREAT idea….but how would we pull it off, other than Jewish Lightning (no ethnicity bashing intended)?

I think that Les or maybe even back as far as Jimmy V…..they came up with a size that was limited to around 16,000 or so. It may be in Tim Peeler’s book, but I can’t cite the exact reference. The fact that we shared it with a Hockey team also impacted the size of the student section.

If we could get the Canes, since they fill it up all the time, to take over the lease and get our 50% or so back, then an arena like you suggested CLOSER to Campus would be the nuts.

    Good idea….

You gotta work on being more assertive and leting folks know what you REALLY think….

i like reynolds.. i like the rbc.. especially being right beside carter finley! i think the two setup nicely for new comers/recruits.

i would love to see more lower level seating. i don’t really care for the upper level.. especially since i paid a jacked up price to see us lose to fsu this year.. it would be alot different if we were better.

that’s just it! when we are a better team.. empty seats won’t be such a big deal.

paint it, wolfpack it up.. it does not matter.. just get to the top of the ACC please! we’ll never get back to reynolds unless that place is leveled.. aint happening.

Apologies in advance for my eloquence, but 1) I hate the ESA, and 2) I’m on my 3rd goblet of Johnny Walker black label.

Just build a convocation center on campus. Stick a couple racket ball courts and a pool in it to appease the faculty, and be done with it. Hire the architect who did the UVA arena. Just make it loud and collegiate.

    How difficult is:

    RGB R-204 G-0 B-0 or #CC0000 ???

    ====

Actually, there’s an entire system of color specifications for fabrics, plastics, paints, etc. RGB has a much wider gamut than CMYK, you can’t spec a fabric with hexadecimal, paints and dyes depend on pigments, patterned fabrics get created using inkjet or dye-sublimation techniques, etc. etc. It can be a real pain to get the “right” red across all the potential media. That said, with an order that big, I can’t imagine that it went forward without multiple samples and approvals. If I was handling that job, I would have taken the sample to the RBC to compare under the actual lighting conditions (or do my best to recreate them). You’d be amazed at how different a color can look under fluorescent and incandescent lighting.

Look forward to returning to the RBC and sitting in one of those red seats, and enjoying the new era in men’s basketball. Good luck Coach Gottfried!

nothing against the esa, its a great place for a hockey game, but its a bit antiseptic for me. i’m sure the recruits love it because its as nice as most nba arenas, but for me nothing beats reynolds, nothing we could build beats reynolds. if they built a better deck next to it and turned pullen and morill into one way in one way out roads i’d say lets play every game in reynolds. i’m not holding my breath for that, but maybe just maybe could we play one acc game there a year. not that i don’t love watching us play d-2 schools in our old gym but once a year if we could play in reynolds, man i remember the days…

^ The reason you won’t see an ACC game in Reynolds is money. Even at times when the team has not been successful, they’ve been able to sell more tickets for ACC games (and season tix) in the RBC than what Reynolds can hold.

Early season cupcakes which likely won’t sell enough either way (in either venue) won’t lose significant money by being played as the Reynolds throwback game. In fact, picking a game that would be a snoozer anyway and moving it to Reynolds, then promoting it as a special event, could possibly sell more tickets, thereby increasing revenue for that otherwise unremarkable game.

Plus the Reynolds game has to be either GA or, if it is reserved seating, it has to be sold individually (ie separate from season tix), which pretty effectively eliminates conference games or decent OOC games.

In the lower level LTR end zone there are many seats which are somewhat smaller and harder than the softer seats that make up most of the lower level. Are they going to replace these harder seats with the softer ones or simply re-cover each seat with red?

We enjoyed Reynolds from 1972 until the last season, let’s see, 1999 – 2000? At first we sat high in the south end zone (hey, we were happy to be there with some other rabid fans, and watching DT, TB, MT and crew certainly helped!) and as our WPC standing very gradually improved, so did our seats, until the last 8 or so years we were behind the State bench, maybe 6 or 8 rows up. When Valvano walked into Reynolds, there was “electricity” and all eyes were on him, especially after the ’83 season. We now have good seats in the RBC. We enjoy occasional trips back to Reynolds, and the atmosphere is great. However, we do appreciate the RBC–parking, including access, is so much better (could be improved, though), the concourses are spacious (compared to Reynolds, where at halftime one could hardly move), and so many more fans have a better view of the game (at Reynolds, there were some terrible sight lines, especially on the sides beyond the baskets). I would prefer a smaller, non-hockey arena, but we have what we have, and like many others, I believe what the RBC really needs is more fans, and more fans who care about NCSU, not just “fans” filling corporate seats, and not more fans of our opponents who have, e.g., purchased tickets on the internet (don’t get me started!). I am hopeful that our new coaching staff will improve our team’s performance to the extent that fans–cheering fans–in the seats is no longer an issue, that the new problem will be, “How in the Hell can I get some tickets to watch the WP play BB?”. GO PACK!

Heck, those seats are ten years old. It’s about time for a facelift. I’m glad they are finally going to be red. Burgundy never did cut it.

” Jewish Lightning (no ethnicity bashing intended)”

Maybe not intended, but still not cool, IMO.
