Lutz to join BB staff

Former Charlotte 49ers coach Bobby Lutz will join Mark Gottfried’s staff at N.C. State.

Lutz gives the new Wolfpack basketball coach two assistants with connections to the state, as well as head-coaching experience.

Longer article from Hickory Daily Record

It’s not often that the HDR has a longer article than the CO on an ACC topic. But Lutz was a player at Bandy’s High School which is in the same county as Hickory.

Welcome to the Wolfpack family Bobby.

I for one am glad the rumor turned out to be true. It has always been stated that you surround yourself with good people and MG seems to be doing that. The fact that they have worked together in pairs and now all three at the same time leads me to believe less time is needed for them to getting to know each other and they can get on their way with recruiting and coaching our team.

If I remember back when Sidney came on board, he was racing against the clock and the clock was ticking. In all fairness to Sid, he had an AD who wasn’t much of a help if any at all.

So that’s 2 for 3 so far on assistant coach rumors coming true, right? (Gaudio being #3)
My initial reaction is that I’m very happy about this hire, but I admit to not knowing much when it comes to this kind of stuff. For those in the know, what are the strengths of Mr. Lutz being on staff?

    Good hire

Off the top of my head, I’d say for both that their familiarity with the recruiting trail in the immediate region and varied experience coaching as both a HC and asst. in several different programs are the biggest pluses.

Lutz has done just about all of his coaching in the southeast (Clemson, Pfeiffer, Charlotte) aside from the past year, so he should have some recruiting familiarity with HS coaches. Early also did his early asst. coaching in the region up until he left to join MG at ‘Bama.

Also, not sure if this is a plus or not, but Early was on staff with Lutz at Charlotte for the first few years that Lutz was HC there.

  6. GoldenChain 04/09/2011 at 6:59 AM #

I think Early was there from 99-01 and they went dancing 2 of those 3 years.

I live about 10 miles from uncc and always thought Lutz got dealt a bad hand when Charlotte went from CUSA to the A-10.
No big name schools (some decent basketball programs but not branded schools) and the geography was terrible so no rivals to generate buzz.
Therefore Lutz couldn’t recruit well his last couple years and the results fell off.

Lutz was always a contender in CUSA. Talk about a coack who could find a diamond in the rough and coach them up, I can think of no one better.

First chunk of unquestionably good news in a while… this is a great hire. Now, we just need someone who can coach defense & rebounding…

PackerinRussia, I don’t think that is two for three. I’m fairly certain it would either be Gaudio or Lutz, but not both. It will be a “Dream Team” of assistants if we do land Dino though.

” So that’s 2 for 3 so far on assistant coach rumors coming true, right? ”

Too bad we didn’t have that kind of success rate for the HC candidate rumors. We’d be enjoying the afterglow of having landed a head coaching tag team featuring two out of three among Barnes, Miller and Donovan.

Think that would have made us immediately relevant and put the blues on notice?

Awesome staff Gottfried is assembling. This will greatly help he transition. Lutz is an extremely friendly person that obviously knows his basketball. I am excited about this staff. Great job.

Sid did a great job of recruiting. I have a feeling these guys are going to take it to another level,

  12. rtpack24 04/09/2011 at 8:28 AM #

Lutz is a great addition to the staff. The guy knows everyone in the basketball world and also he is a good coach. Look on front page of News and Observer today and see why we do not want Jim Harrick involved with our program in any capacity. We need another young coach or Dino.

Lutz is first class in every respect. Great hire and i am so glad to have Lutz back in NC!

This hire is a home run. Lutz is quality. Energetic, smart, can recruit, and he can teach. Things continue to look much better for the future. Go Pack.

  15. Plz2BStateFan 04/09/2011 at 9:29 AM #

Well, if you want a staff that will challenge the head coach and not turn into yes men, I think we are going to get it.

  16. packpride_ie94 04/09/2011 at 9:43 AM #

This is a fantastic hire for many reasons, not the least of which is Bobby’s 20+ years of recruiting connections in NC/SC. Add to that his extensive experience as a head coach, his drive/passion for the game, and his propensity to teach.

Then, when you consider that both Gottried and Lutz had their best results when each worked with Early in the past, you can easily see how this staff will hit the ground running and gel quickly.

I’m on board. The hiring process with painful and revealing and some mistakes were made but there is a clear direction and plan in place here. Now, let’s all give them our full support…lot’s of hard work ahead.

    Welcome to the team Bobby!

I gotta say I’m impressed with the staff so far. Gottfried may not be a big name coach, but I think he’s got the stuff. It’s pleasing to see such experienced and skilled assistants jumping on board. My only concern is that our players will take to this new change and see it as good situation for them.

One question I have is what are our recruits going to do with this situation. Are they still coming or are they looking to go elsewhere. I’m mainly talking about Harris and Uechebo.

  18. ncsujuri 04/09/2011 at 10:55 AM #

Was there confirmation on the Moxley hire or just on Early/Lutz so far?

  19. choppack1 04/09/2011 at 10:57 AM #

In an odd twist, we can’t find effective HC to be our HC, but we’ve been able to hire to assistants who were head coaches whom I both think would be fairly welcome for most schools w/ an assistant coach opening.

It’s encouraging – it’s the first big test in a series of them before practice starts.

The next step is of course, keeping current players and committed recruits.

Good so far!! I hope Debbie coughs up some extra cash so we can tie down Dino as Associate Head Coach. It’s well known that he wants to be be a HC again, so it will take a shiny dime to keep him. Also, to expect a commitment of any more than 2-3 years would be wishful thinking, in my view. Maybe a nice short term deal with an option… Hey! I can dream!!

  21. packalum44 04/09/2011 at 11:01 AM #

Uchebo has not made a public comment. Harris’s father has spoken on his behalf – he seems to be 90% committed. These great assistant hires have to increase our chances with both.

Luckily for the staff, Ucebo plays in Raleigh – Word of God. He is easily accessible by the coaches and they have time to convince them he’s in a good spot. Not to mention that a NC State alumnus coaches the team.

  22. choppack1 04/09/2011 at 11:06 AM #

My big question – is anyone going to get our existing kids into shape? There’s a lot of room for improvement on the S&C front.

  23. packalum44 04/09/2011 at 11:07 AM #

I heard the Situation was retained to help the kids get the best looking abs in the ACC. Does that count?

  24. Wolfy__79 04/09/2011 at 11:29 AM #

My only concern is that our players will take to this new change and see it as good situation for them. “”

i don’t understand how this is a concern? i want them to “take” to the change and buy in immediately, which it sounds as if that is the case with leslie, brown and howell.

…you mean that we just got a former HC that had uncc competitive nationally?!!! i think this is a great hire!!! better than gaudio. that being said, i would love to see a gaudio addition to this staff!! in the mix with skip, wake played some pretty good bball!

i don’t know for sure how our recruiting will transition from HC to HC.. but i know what was lacking wasn’t recruiting. our players are young and most of them likely to stick around for atleast two more years. … i see this good staff making a huge impact on these kids and recruiting taking care of itself!!

it took me a while but i’m sold on MG! look at who he’s got coming to be assts!! as stated earlier, he’s surrounding himself with some pretty good company! why at this point is it in anyones interest to back pedal and question the HC hire. heck, the man is even on the david glenn talk show reaching out to the fans!! i’m behind this guy 1000%

i also feel that it can be a smoother transition for someone that isn’t BD, SM or barnestantanople! MG also said it’s nice to have a fan base with high expectations and the fans/culture is what was lacking for him at bama.. i couldn’t agree more!! PACK!
