Debbie speaks

Dear Wolfpack Family,

I am writing to share with you the status of the search for our new head coach for men’s basketball. There have been telephone conversations with successful coaches that did not develop into meetings — sometimes because we did not wish to pursue those coaches further and sometimes because the coach involved is happy where he is.

The conversations have been candid. We have not tried to sugarcoat the challenge of rebuilding our basketball program. Our absence for 5 consecutive years from the NCAA Tournament was noted by each coach as evidence that the program is in poor shape and will require a special effort to rebuild.

Finding a coach with the fight and fire to do this job has been a challenge. That said, we will find an excellent college coach who shares the vision of what State Basketball can become and is up for the challenge.

I realize there are multiple rumors surfacing about the nature of the search on websites and in newspapers. Once our new coach is hired, I will be in a position to bring perspective to a number of those rumors. But, right now, we need to remain focused on finding a talented collegiate coach who is a fighter, full of confidence and appreciation for the opportunity to lead our basketball program back to national prominence.

That will happen in spite of those who believe this cannot occur.

Wolfpack Basketball is destined for a revival. We will accept no less. Please keep the faith while we continue the search. Your emails and text messages of support have meant everything to me. I am blessed to be your AD.

In the Spirit of the Pack,
Debbie

I thinks it’s time for us all to contribute to the “buy/bribe a good coach fund.” DY please let all alumni, fans, past students, and the Student Wolfpack Club members know our individual financial responsibility. Looks we are going to need to set the benchmark for the highest paid college basketball coach.
After reading that email from DY…what else can we do. D@$?, I belived her when this search started.

Think today was bad…sports media will have a field day with this email form DY…why fuel the FIRE????

Not saying the letter is faked, but ignorant question – why was it only sent out to the WPC? Nothing on GoPack, nothing under “News” on the schools website…why just targeting one group of people?

    we suck again?!?

So Yow is so great……….way greater than Fowler? Then let her act like it. We have nobody. She’s acting so inexperienced!

  5. Wolfguy 04/05/2011 at 12:00 AM #

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse today. Wow.

    I am stunned and numb.

  6. wolfpacker 04/05/2011 at 12:01 AM #

If she really sent the letter, she had to be DRUNK! Unless it was an effort to calm all the chatter…if that is the case, she will look like a genius…

    Time will tell…24 to 48 hours…

Pearl has all of those qualities plus NCAA violations to add with it.

Who knows what the heck is going on. I am not looking forward to seeing this letter posted on every media outlet in the nation by morning. That’s not a knock on DY but just the reality. The media will have fun with this at our expense again.

All we can do is be hopeful before passing too much judgement. It just seems tough to swallow right now.

This is like we are a school on NCAA pobation the way everyone is keeping their distance from us, and that is what is weird. There are many schools that have rebuilding issues or competition with recruiting, and if this new coach can’t beat UNC and Duke all the time so what! He will not lose all the time to them either. Plus, is that to say he wouldn’t be able to beat the other schools in the ACC?

So every coach in America that has a proven winning resume is just going to not take the challenge to disprove this Duke UNC mindset that the media has grown. I really have a hard time believing this. Just look at the Big East those coaches don’t live on easy street.

What are the other reasons why DY can’t land a coach? Is this the reason? I ask all of you this, Don’t you feel it is more than that?

Anyone who reads that letter as anything but an epic fail really is a delusional State fan. We are f***ed and DY basically just told us that in the letter.

Someone’s head should roll for that letter – a HUGE mistake. I’m not sure the search can recover at this point.

Yep, can’t wait to see the reactions by our good pals Seth Davis, Mr. Goodman, and Mr. Parrish. Talk about reinforcing the national media’s opinion and rationale of where State basketball belongs on the grand scale. Disheartening to say the least.

Why not Bob Knight? The program is lacking intensity, specifically defensively.

  12. Baccapacker 04/05/2011 at 12:14 AM #

I have a feeling we may have burned bridges with others who were previously interested in the job because we felt we were going to land a big name or Smart perhaps. Sounds like there have been a lot of coaches interested and I just get the feeling Yow may have told them thanks but no thanks because she felt confident in somebody else and when that didn’t happen we ended up here with nowhere to turn back to.

Chill Letter was not that bad. It was certainly candid and honest. That’s how she rolls. If we are back at square one so be it. At least we know and can chill.

So how long has DY been on the job? 3 weeks ago in the PC this is a great job and we’re gonna get a great experienced coach. Now nobody wants the job? Did she talk to anyone about the perception of the job/school prior to Lowe resigning? Very disappointed in that letter.

  15. Whiteshoes67 04/05/2011 at 12:21 AM #

Most of the reactions to the letter on here, and elsewhere, are ridiculous. All the whining about signaling failure and harming your brand is nonsense. The comparisons of Yow to Fowler are equally absurd. Adventuroo, thanks for a little sanity sprinkled in between all the crap being spewed.

All DY’s letter did was ruin somebody’s fantasy that we already had Super Coach [Insert Name] locked up. No coach who wants to be here, and is up to the challenge gives a crap about some letter. Nor do recruits. Nor would the absence of said letter ever have made a difference 3-4 weeks from now if we still don’t have a coach; and it sure as hell won’t improve or damage the situation further when we hire a coach. All it did was make the lunatics crap themselves a little more.

  16. JeremyH 04/05/2011 at 12:23 AM #

It is now public that we have been spurned, that letter confirms that, AND that there is no “ace up the sleeve” and no “fall back”.

    Well then.

Don’t agree with sending the letter, but this is not over.

    Let’s see what happens.

It seemed like the letter was written because a lot of people were squirming – I don’t think the letter had the effect intended though. The letter was indeed candid and honest – but don’t think it should have been sent.

Word for the day is spurn!

Looks like ESPN, CBS, and everyone else is going to have their hands full tomorrow with this bombshell of a field day!

Guys, let’s quit the pity party and get on with life. Take a look at the SMU football program and how it has recovered from an NCAA “death penalty” it has returned from complete oblivion. We need a coach with some stones who wants to re-build a storied program. It is complete bull to think we can’t do what SMU has done. I was a senior in 1983 and saw what a little known coach from Iona could do after losing a coach with an NCAA title to Florida. Give me a break, I have no sympathy for DY if she can’t find the right fit for our program.
Sleep well Wolfpack nation, things will work out for the best,

I always liked the idea, from the beginning, that if you want someone you go after him. The idea of going after A and if that doesn’t work then going after B is absurd. Who wants to be B? This morning when Glen wrote that, we will find out whether it’s true or not, it’s Shaka’s job to take. And if he doesn’t, we already have two coaches that have agreed in principal to take the job. How do you have that many agreeing to take one job? It just doesn’t make sense. Who are the two that are willing to play second fiddles and the same time? I am just saying.

  21. PackAche 04/05/2011 at 12:35 AM #

So it is a fantasy to think that Yow might have hired a coach by now? That she might have actually put some thought into this BEFORE our final game? That we finally had an AD capable of accomplishing something in a reasonable time frame?

Most state fans i know are not lunatic. but they are combustible. they have had their hopes raised and dashed so many times over the last 20 years. not sure how anyone could expect them to be any different. pile on the fact that we have to hear the non stop daily drivel about how great our neighbors down the road in blue are. its amazing we have any collective sanity.

If the hire isn’t made by now, how far down the friggin list are we? Where is this fiery coach coming from? CPCC? Elon? ECU? Broughton HS? if we are that far down the list, then it might as well have been Archie.

I thought that the cupboard being full would have helped bring someone in. I guess not. The candidates are thinking “I need to have a much better than .500 record to get into the NCAA tournament, and 4 games are automatically lost to the blues. um, no thanks”
