WRAL: NC State interested in VCU’s Smart

NC State interested in Shaka Smart

NC State has an eye on VCU head coach Shaka Smart.
Multiple sources told WRAL on Saturday that Smart is a coach of interest for NC State. He was recently contacted by either the Parker search firm or by an NC State intermidiary to gauge his interest in coaching the Wolfpack.

NC State director of athletics Debbie Yow would not comment on the search.

The longer VCU wins, the longer it will be before Smart turns his attention to his future. VCU beat Florida State to advance to the Southwest region finals against Kansas. That’s the deepest NCAA run in VCU school history.

Multiple schools have an interest in hiring Smart. The 33-year old coach is in his second year at VCU, his first head coaching position. He has a 53-20 record at VCU finishing fourth and fifth in the Colonial Conference. The Rams received an at-large bid to this year’s NCAA tournament after losing to Old Dominion in the Colonial tournament finals.

Smart’s salary at VCU is a reported $325,000 but school officials are already working on a new contract that would boost his salary significantly.

Prior to VCU, Smart was an assistant for Billy Donovan at Florida. He has also been an assistant at Clemson, Akron and Dayton.

Smart played point guard at Kenyon College in Ohio where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in history.

One thing that SFN would like to note — NC State could be ‘interested’ in, and gathering information on, A LOT a lot of coaches. Since Debbie Yow has the NC State side buttoned up tighter than a [insert whimsical quip here], we only know of coaches getting ‘interest’ if those coaches (or their representatives) leak information.

Additionally, even if information gets leaked from the coaches’ side doesn’t mean that information is accurate. For example, in NC State’s last coaching search in 2006, LSU’s John Brady tried to use the media to attach himself to the search to maneuver for a raise &/or contract extension. It was bush-league…and, it was fun to see him ultimately get fired. Of course, there are other coaches who pull this type of stuff all of the time.

We are not saying that is what is happening with Smart right now…but, I’m not convinced that just because this information has trickled into the public that Smart has catapulted to the top of any legitimate list of Yow’s.

As evidenced by some of the conversation in this thread, most Wolfpackers appear to be more attracted to Smart’s predecessor at VCU, Anthony Grant (who is now at Alabama). You may remember that Grant had been identified/hired by Florida to replace Billy Donovan a few years ago when Donovan did had his change of heart with the Orlando Magic.

The Butler did it again. Woohoo! And Gus had the call. Pure!!

    Now, give em hell, Sean!!

I actually would rather have Archie Miller than a lot of these guys being mentioned. He could be the diamond in the rough State is looking for. I know he happened to play for State, but don’t you think he’s picked a lot of coaching experience off his brother. His dad threw that suggestion out there. I know this is out there, but it begs the question.

    What if he is right???

” Wow is this all DY has in basket of goodies. ”

Where exactly did you read that? Did you even bother to read the entire entry before posting this?

” I’ll bet DY is just shaking her head at what gets posted on the Interweb! ”

Yeah, she’s not the only one.

And as far as Archie is concerned, maybe he is the diamond in the rough and maybe he’s not. But after what happened five years ago DY would be tarred and feathered if she hired Archie at this point in time (and she knows it).

How could you justify Archie with no HC experience after 5 years with Lowe? Archie’s great, but let him earn his wings in a mid-major first. Brad Stevens on the other hand. I’d write him a blank check this afternoon. Not that he would leave Butler for the Wolfpack. At this point I’m glad I am not the AD. The pressure to succeed must be a bitch.

    On a completely different subject….

Leslie Visser looks ill. Seriously, I’m not trying to be funny here. The woman looks like she just stepped out of a cancer treatment ward. Anyone know anything about this or is she just using the wrong makeup?

I think Donvan was sending a hidden message to State fans when he called the “Whittenburg ’83” play during the final possession of regulation and the final two plays in OT.

BD, that only works if your are in Raleigh… Where you would be more than welcome at a basketball school. And State’s got great fuh’sil’tees.

  8. BJD95 03/26/2011 at 7:19 PM #

Well, we did have a few Donovan theorist on the message board. I suppose we will see if they had the right idea soon enough, eh?

Had the NCAA selection committee omitted VCU and chosen Colorado instead(as they should’ve done), we wouldn’t be reading this post now. And I’d much rather have the CU coach anyway. I know people think Va Tech got shafted, but Colorado absolutely should’ve been in the NCAAs.

It was a nice win last night for VCU, but that game was lost by FSU and Leonard Hamilton more than it was won by the Rams. I know FSU plays tough defense and got to the 16, but Hamilton is at best a mediocre coach who resembles Herb Sendek in close games. And the big grin on his face at game’s end, WTF?

The ACC is a league that’s recently been plagued with mediocre to just plain bad coaches. State and GT can change this somewhat in the coming weeks, but will they? And who will make the better hire?

  10. werncstate 03/26/2011 at 7:32 PM #

If Brad Stevens isn’t number one on Yow’s list then maybe we don’t have the right AD. Maybe he is not interested in coming here but you darn well better ask his interest.

  11. Wufpacker 03/26/2011 at 7:35 PM #

^ I agree with 61 to an extent. I personally wouldn’t mind Smart being hired (always assuming that other avenues/efforts for more proven coaches were exhausted first), but I do understand where folks are coming from as far as him not being a proven commodity just yet.

He is a young and energetic coach, no doubt, and he is the “hot” name right now. Whether that will translate into a long and successful career is definitely a bit more of an unknown than some other candidates, however.

^^^Stevens has coached a poor game today. Should have gone 2 for 1 twice and his junk defenses in it have been stupid.

Whew. Really??? I did notice the two 2 for 1’s. I also would have been tempted to foul up 3 in OT on FL’s last possession. However, saying he coached a poor game is a stretch IMO. I mean really. He’s in the Final Four two straight years…at BUTLER!

Looks like Brad Stevens had a better plan than Billy Donovan. Brad Stevens is probably as untouchable as Sean Miller. If you look at the “dream” list that is on the side bar, most of them left for greener pastures in 2007. I still think that some of the “not playing” coaches are on the list….and will concede that MF is probably not in our future.

Smart is really smart and outoached Hamilton last night. He SHOULD be on our list. Now PLEASE don’t get upset that Ricky (there is NO offical confirmation EITHER way….as there is with SM) will not be moving to NC. And Tubby Smith…..his son, Snuffy, would be a better candidtate…..The 34 – 47 year old coaches are a better match.

Let’s not burn the DY effigy YET…..might just want to consider it a shrine if she pulls a rabbit out of her whatever. She seems totally in control of this and all the “rumors” have WAY more speculation that in 2006. All we know for SURE is that SM was approached, had some type of general offer, thought about it for awhile, and decided to pass.

What OTHER Credible stuff do we have. I used to work at WRAL in my college days and respect their personnel….but remember Jeff Gravely was reporting that Sidney was getting a 500K buyout….from these SAME Multiple Sources…..turns out that was only 80% in error and sid got over $900K….so WRAL’s sources may not be THAT credible.

Wait until AFTER VCU plays tomorrow. If they come back to old Virginny as a NO PLAYING ANYMORE team, then the mating ritual could get REAL SERIOUS and some down and dirty stuff (in a good way) could transpire. Our coffers are really bountiful compared to VCU….but they will probably try to use every penny hidden in the sofa to keep Shaka from Shagging Off down the road.

Ah, the lack of REALLY Credible information is bringing out the very best and also the most humorous comments…..THIS is worth reading….

Hiring Smart would be a gamble at best… a disaster at worst. With the athletic administration ties between Raleigh and Richmond, and the scuttlebutt coming down I95, I’d be very surprised if Smart was offered.

    Wuf, concerning Leslie Visser:
    it’s that old HDTV thing.
    every single female
    on-air-talent that
    i have talked with
    in the last four
    years hates it.
    the old-style
    TV added 15
    pounds. HDTV
    adds years.

Thanks for the thorough research and answer. If I wasn’t a lazy bastard I guess I could have answered my own question.

Skidding across the pavement on your face will cause some damage I suppose, and I’m glad I didn’t lay into her like some of the guys on that forum page you linked. Talk about cold blooded.

  18. packbackr04 03/26/2011 at 8:48 PM #

why do we jump from RB and SM straight to smart? what about buzz williams or Josh Pastner?

  19. Howler 03/26/2011 at 9:05 PM #

Arizona wins and the focus is on our interest in Miller. VCU wins, and we’re going after Smart. Uconn just won, so I guess that means Jim Calhoun will be our next coach, right?

  20. Itiger 03/26/2011 at 9:07 PM #

Arizona just lost…so do we give-up?

Next week is going to be hell on my productivity at work.

    Can’t wait!

Off-subject but too funny to pass up. Hot off cbssports.com’s front page:
“…the Huskies are heading to Houston after a 65-63 win. They move on to face Kentucky in the Final Four.”

Guess UNC is as good as done, eh?

  23. MatSci94 03/26/2011 at 9:12 PM #

Everyone is a gamble. The difference is that we now have an AD willing to cut someone loose if its clear it isn’t working. Many people here said the biggest risk in hiring Lowe in the first place was that he would stay too long as a ‘this isn’t working’ situation.

  24. swamppack 03/26/2011 at 9:24 PM #

^^Good point MatSci94. I would guess a general unrest after 3 yrs. would do it for the next coach if it’s not a big- name proven winner. If it’s a big-name they’re going to get at least as long as Sid even if some unimaginable scenario plays out for them. Then they would be gone also.

  25. MBS 03/26/2011 at 9:27 PM #

It’s hard not to think that Smart has “it”. In the right situation, he will be a star. Sure it’s a gamble, but I would rather grab a guy like Shaka, who has an unlimited future, than an established guy who has been pretty good. This guy could be GREAT. I would like to give him a chance here.
