Giglio: Miller and Turgeon are top two names

Link to J.P. Giglio’s twitter account.

Arizona’s Sean Miller and Texas A&M’s Mark Turgeon are the top two names in the search

Read BJD95’s earlier entry on Turgeon here.

Mark Turgeon – Probably should have been our “B List” hire the last time. Now, after some great work at Texas A&M (Wichita State before that), I put him on the “A List.” He’s a former Roy Williams assistant, which adds instant fuel to the rivalry fires, and will bring more national publicity our way. Probably more affordable (but not cheap), and perhaps the most upside. I could easily see him winning a national title here. Combo of being from a Hall of Fame “coaching tree” with head coaching success in his own right.

Read our entry this week on Miller here.

Sean Miller not interested in NC State

With the N.C. State head coaching job at last open, Arizona coach Sean Miller will not be interested in the position.

A source close to the U of A program told Sporting News that Miller does not want the job of replacing Sidney Lowe, who resigned Tuesday. Miller is pleased with the rapid development of the program at Arizona, which resulted in a Pacific-10 Conference championship in his second season.

Email from Yow to WPC members:

Dear #######,

Sent on behalf of the Athletic Director, Deborah A. Yow:

Wolfpacker,
It is with mixed emotions that I share with you that Sidney Lowe has stepped down from his position as head men’s basketball coach. Sidney is, and will always be, an important and valued member of the Wolfpack Family.

A national search for a new coach will begin immediately. Associate Head Coach, Monte Towe, will continue in his current role and lead the basketball program in the interim.

Thanks for your continued support of Wolfpack Athletics.

The press release is below.

Potential candidates from the N&O staff.

Pack parent: Lowe was too much of a perfectionist for his own good(Long interview must read!!)

On the initial reaction to the news of Lowe’s resignation: I have mixed emotions about this situation. Coach Lowe is the one who gave my son the opportunity to realize his dream of playing in the ACC. But on the other hand, I think he had a tough job coming from so many years of coaching in the NBA and then coming to college and coaching college players. To me it was pretty evident that while he learned some over the five years he was here, that there’s a big difference between coaching these college players and coaching in the NBA. So even though he had staff members who had some college experience, it seemed like he insisted on installing an NBA system. And it never really clicked. I don’t think he ever really had a chance of being as successful as he wanted, especially when you’re competing on a daily basis against the coaches at UNC and Duke, who have so much experience dealing with these college kids and understanding how to run a college system.

“I am not going to be Alabama’s next coach.”

    signed,
    Nick Saban

Seriously, what did you expect Sean to say right now?

An AD who actually says about her fanbase, “They would like to win more, considerably more. I can’t fault that. I can’t fault that at all.”

    LOVE THIS LADY!!!

  3. UnclePen 03/15/2011 at 8:28 PM #

She is MOST impressive. One thing I can tell you is that we have better AD than UNC. Dick Manure can’t hold a candle to her. I have great confidence in her ability to get us back to where we should be. She’s a player.

I felt like the last 10 years of crap we’ve put up with listening to LF was washing away while listening to her presser. Hopefully things will go well and we finish with a top candidate. I get the feeling we will.

Let’s just say DY is the real deal…I loved her reference about the last ACC Tile in football was 1979..nice little side comment.

  6. ringo 03/15/2011 at 8:55 PM #

Absolutely full of confidence in Yow right now. Night and day with respect to that sheer fool we had for the last ten years. I knew our luck had to change eventually. Thank God!

was listening to 99.9 the fan this afternoon with Adam and Joe…I swear if one more person calls and says we should take a look at Jeff Capel I am going to scream…and I also heard Mike Davis, and Jeff Lebo..lol

yeah, Im sure DY is going to go get a coach who was just fired, or guy from EZU…some people kill me

  8. ringo 03/15/2011 at 9:02 PM #

some fans just ain’t with it upstairs, sounds like something one of my buddies might say….not a real sports nut, just a casual observer and end up sounding dumb without even knowing

  9. PackMan 03/15/2011 at 9:02 PM #

I also loved the comment about how the program hadn’t has success “in twenty years”… apparently 5-straight NCAAs isn’t her definition of REAL success either… God I love her.

  10. section2chuck 03/15/2011 at 9:05 PM #

I also heard all the Haters calling in to the show..with the usual “NC State cant win with Duke/Carolina down the road”..you know the usual bs from usually Wal-mart Carolina fans….

Do they not want some competition?

    why do they care?

  11. john of sparta 03/15/2011 at 9:10 PM #

    and the Bulldogs win.
    needle meet eye.

  12. MrPlywood 03/15/2011 at 9:11 PM #

They can’t handle the competition. They’re shaking in their boots. More than anything I want State to be a roadblock for both the blues. No more writing a “W” next to State’s name on their schedules.

    Yow hit all the marks.
Acknowledged Lowe’s passion, and was in total control of the presser.

Makes Fowler look like the fool he was.

  14. wolfpackattack89 03/15/2011 at 9:18 PM #

Loved Yow’s presser. When the one reporter asked what she would do if a potential coach would ask about Duke and UNC she simply said she would move on. She would make no pitch to them. She wants someone to look our rivals in the eye and not back down. Just excellent.

  15. john of sparta 03/15/2011 at 9:23 PM #

    “potential” please not that.
this should be Done and Done.

  16. gtspack 03/15/2011 at 9:33 PM #

Right on MattN. Sean can’t say he would entertain the thought right now. It would be a huge distraction for his team. I’m not giving up hope for SM. I think he would be a perfect fit and would give us some longevity.

  17. tvp1 03/15/2011 at 9:47 PM #

Yow talking about “information void”…does she read SFN?

  18. john of sparta 03/15/2011 at 9:54 PM #

    Yow talks.
    what walks?

  19. turfpack 03/15/2011 at 10:15 PM #

Other ACC Teams!!…..you here that Giant yawning in the background?
Also….You here that lady beating on the Giant’s door?….That door will not hold up long…its been 20yrs….OH! SH@#! Debbie’s putting on boots to kick that fricking door in.
IN A FEW DAYS THAT GIANT’S WAKING UP AND HE ANIT HAPPY……YEAH I WOULD BE NERVOUS TO… WITH WHAT’S GOING ON AT NCSTATE!!!! CALL ALL THE SPORT TALK SHOW AND MAKE FUN WHILE YOU CAN YOU DIRT BAGS! ENJOY!

i think it’s been handled with care! i hope sidney slides into an assistant job before the nba playoffs arrive.

  21. Wolfy__79 03/16/2011 at 12:28 AM #

from beginning to end i feel the conference could not have been handled any better than it was! as the conference went along i heard the cheap shots from the reporters get more and more ridiculous.

it was “inappropriate!” they were looking for DY to throw SL under the bus a few times! typical.

i’m glad someone was kept around to keep the players level through this transition in this case towe. he looked like he was coached up a bit before the conference. there are alot of positives to draw upon with what was released today.

  22. Wolfy__79 03/16/2011 at 12:29 AM #

..one being seeing a passionate coach coming into the job with the players we have!! i can’t wait to see lozo raise his game.. should be really good!!!

Now that men is what I want on the sidelines. Someone who coaches with heart and has his players ready to roll before the tip-off.

Heard of Miller……a so-so. Never heard of what’s his name, but then I don’t have time to keep up with every coach in America.
