Coaching Search Update from Dave Glenn

Full link.

Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart continues to be the central figure in N.C. State’s search for a new basketball coach, according to multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community.
Smart, who will turn 34 on April 8, is 55-20 in two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams will play Butler on Saturday at Houston in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament…

According to multiple sources, Wolfpack officials also are considering at least two additional candidates for the job. One of those candidates already has given preliminary approval of the basic framework of an agreement with NCSU.

Yes! Let’s get Shaka right now while we can toss 4 mil+ at him! Bargain!
/throws up in mouth a little

IDK – 4mil seems like a lot, but I would go all in on a SMART bet.

That is huge update. So it sounds like we have a place to land and we are down to 3 candidates.

Who the f#*k is Dave Glenn? I’m starting to get tired of this guy. We will probably not going to get Donovan, but I am pretty sure that at least a phone call call was made, and some interest was shown on the BD side. And the BD rumors are not as crazy as saying for example that Gregg Popovic was in Raleigh yesterday, he almost bailed on Florida once, money can make people make the strangest decisions.

I’ll be fine with Smart or any other good coach under the radar, but even the local media does not have any idea of what is going on. We can pay a lot of money, and a lot of coaches will listen.

If Painter is in play, which is highly debatable, shouldn’t he be contacted. You would think Woodson would support that move.

  6. Daily Update 03/30/2011 at 11:05 AM #

Manu: DG didn’t make those statements. It was a quote from one of his sources.

Not sure how to feel as we continue to get “news” that each big name we go after is no longer an option. While I agree that Smart is the best of the remaining options and has the most up-side, I’m having a hard time getting over the fact that a “big-name” hire seems less and less likely now that all of the mentioned “big names” are out of the tournament and we haven’t made a hire yet.

Do you guys feel Smart is worth the $4M? Is that what it would take to get him?

Upside is risky but exciting…we’ll see what happens this week.

I like DG’s radio show, but reallly? Does he really have his stuff straight? I’m thinking all of this is just a bunch of smoke screens.

  9. sequoyah 03/30/2011 at 11:13 AM #

long time reader, first time poster…..Tip the hat to ol’ Norwood for trying to get Shaka a nice paycheck since he’s going to lose him anyway…and they say Smart doesn’t have an agent.

I know DU, but he chooses to publish them. I know “don’t shoot the messenger”, but Glenn is starting to look like another “State fans are ignorant/delusional/should-know-their-place” kind of douche bag to me. He sure has the douche face to go along.

  11. Daily Update 03/30/2011 at 11:16 AM #

Do you listen to his show? He loves our job, our AD, and said that Miller and Barnes were legit candidates at 1 time.

The rumors yesterday were a bit ridiculous IMO.

  12. Chucks Chesticles 03/30/2011 at 11:17 AM #

OK, I am taking from that we have Shaka Smart locked in our sights and Sean Miller and Rick Barnes are also in the stable just waiting to take the job. Nice!

but Glenn is starting to look like another “State fans are ignorant/delusional/should-know-their-place” kind of douche bag to me.

DG is now and always had been a douche. He doesn’t always lie about State, but he has in the past and there is no reason to think that he won’t in the future.

If he told me it was raining outside, I would look out of a window before I picked up an umbrella.

  14. wolfpackattack89 03/30/2011 at 11:18 AM #

Shaka should be the backup plan aka if nothing else works. IMO Marshall would be a very underwhelming hire. Mediocre at best.

  15. newt 03/30/2011 at 11:18 AM #

MG – Of course he is!

What’s pathetic is calling around and printing articles in response to stargazing conversations amongst a school’s sportsfans on a website that just happens to be viewable to the public.

What we’re doing on here is the equivalent of counting down from 5 to the last shot in your driveway, except this loser reports “Newt didn’t actually defeat Kentucky for the national title in his driveway last night. I asked Calipari and he mocked the very idea.”

It’s not embarassing in the least for a fan of a school to believe they have the best program on earth.

  16. MattN 03/30/2011 at 11:19 AM #

We are NOT going to throw over 10X current salary at Shaka. Get a grip. He’s a 1-1.5M coach right now…

  17. newt 03/30/2011 at 11:22 AM #

I’m sure Shaka’s AD threw out $4M to set a bar nobody could/would want to reach.

  18. Daily Update 03/30/2011 at 11:22 AM #

^No way. Last VCU coach got $1.8 million from Alabama. Pastner got $1.7 from Memphis.

  19. Daily Update 03/30/2011 at 11:24 AM #

That was to MattN. I think Shaka will be $2.0 million give or take a few either way. We need him worse than he needs us. Good news from DG that we have an acceptable candidate who would take the job though. That could help us in negotiations with Smart.

But I wouldn’t lose your only slash hire over money. Get it done.

  20. eas 03/30/2011 at 11:30 AM #

I can help ask myself the following questions…

    1. If Smart didn’t have his tournament run would we offer him a job? Doubt it.
    2. Would we hire a CAA 2 year coach with a “decent” regular season record? Nope
    3. Would we pay a 2 year coach coming from the CAA 2+ million a year? Doubt it.
    4. Did he recruit any of his current team?

I do like Smart as an option because of his passion and work ethic. He is doing an excellent job at VCU.

I just see it as strange that we may potentially pay Smart BIG money to come here when would never have done so prior to the tournament. This is not a knock on Smart but rather us if this experiment goes forward & doesn’t pan out.

  21. sautz 03/30/2011 at 11:32 AM #

Has Dave Glenn ever found that fire in in AJ Davis recruitment? jerk.

  22. sautz 03/30/2011 at 11:33 AM #

Oh, so who are the other guys? Marshall and maybe Brey? I’m blanking on the 3rd “B List” guy (or girl according to some posters here)

  23. rtpack24 03/30/2011 at 11:34 AM #

I do not think David Glenn knows anything but is guessing as to what is happening. I do not see the luster of Greg Marshall. In 2006 Mark Turgeon took W.St to the sweet sixteen. Marshall gets the job in 2007 and has not been to the NCAA tournament yet. DY has known since mid March that Matt Painter was open to offers to leave Purdue. We are NC State so nothing ever goes as planned or easy. Hopefully, we will have a coach in the near future that will bring the glory back.

  24. BJD95 03/30/2011 at 11:36 AM #

Smart will be $2-2.5M. If this is where we’re headed (not convinced yet), then I’m glad to have someone in our hip pocket so Smart can’t rake us over the coals for a ridiculous contract.

  25. wolfie91 03/30/2011 at 11:38 AM #

^And what if the man in our pocket is Cronin? Just throwing that out.
