Mike Glennon officially takes reins as NC State quarterback

Signing day served to reveal some developments with NC State’s football roster that were not previously known.

In afternoon interviews, Head Coach Tom O’Brien announced today that the program will be moving forward with Mike Glennon as the starting quarterback and that Russell Wilson will be playing baseball with the Colorado Rockies.  O’Brien did hedge some by saying, ‘the door is always open’ for Wilson’s return…but, he does not expect the return.  The program will clearly make adjustments to the offense to accommodate Glennon’s individual strengths and weaknesses.

The Glennon era will launch with the absence of three of his projected to 7 or 8 offensive lineman as Sam Jones and Henry Lawson are no longer with the program and starter, Andrew Wallace, will likely miss through October with a knee injury.  In other roster news, Colby Jackson will miss the year with a medical hardship and Logan Winkles will likely miss through October like Wallace.

NC State does not like knees

I’m most upset about Wallace. That one really hurts, especially if we have any challenging games early on.

Welcome to the spotlight, Mr. Glennon. I’m confident that you can handle it.

Does anyone find it interesting that TOB announced this about Glennon after receiving 20 LOI’s?

Granted, most of these incoming freshmen will redshirt anyway, and the ones that don’t would have only played with Russell for one year… but I have to question the timing of this announcement. Even if it probably wouldn’t have made a difference, it still appears that TOB kept this close to his vest intentionally, waiting for the binding letters to arrive.

    what happened to sam jones?

  5. packalum44 02/02/2011 at 9:42 PM #

^ I’m guessing academics. We don’t cheat. Too bad it seems there are not any consequences.

Just when we start to get some consistency on the line…

I think Glennon will be good. Growing pains yes. Very possibly he will be better than Wilson who maxed out his talents and peaked his sophomore year.

He would have been better in football and peaked his senior year if he would have just not played baseball. I mean, money is just money so who cares, right?

The OL defections and injuries will hurt depth a bit.

What we should expect to see next year is a starting OL of

    Crisp
    Christophe
    Wentz
    Allen
    Mattes

Overgaard will be a key backup, and Crawford can back up Wentz at center. But with Jones gone and Wallace unable to play, we’ll need some of the R-Fr (Box, Jomantas, and Chandler) to step up and give us some snaps as a backup just like Christophe did this year.

It wouldn’t stun me if the staff found an OL from an unusual source, like they did with Akinniyi and Lemon on the DL in past years, to shore up depth.

The news about Jackson sucks, I think he could have been a nice player.

packalum44: Sam Jones didn’t leave because of academics. It’s actually a family situation – he’s married with a young child, and his wife (State alum) is moving to Arizona for an opportunity. He had to make a decision, and since he’s older (remember, it took him some time to get to State) and the NFL isn’t looking like a realistic opportunity, he chose to move with his family.

Hate to lose him, especially since he’s a Fuquay kid (State doesn’t get many Bengals for some reason), but I completely respect his decision. When you think about it, it’s a really mature decision for a guy in his shoes.

Ready to see what Glennon can do. Hurts to lose those guys, but we have spring practice to find back ups.

  11. packalum44 02/03/2011 at 9:54 AM #

Foot in mouth. We will miss Sam Jones on the line.

  12. Prowling Woofie 02/03/2011 at 10:02 AM #

Thanks for that info, FuquayWolf – best of luck to Sam and his family.

Hope Wallace and Winkles can make complete and swift recoveries.

Fuquay: You have to respect his decision. He did the right thing.

Yippiekiyay!! The show must go on…..
Get ’em Glennon. They may endure some growing pains, however the team will be Fine.

Question I asked on another post, does this mean we have open schollies? If depth is possibly an issue, is there room to grab a JuCo?

  16. old13 02/03/2011 at 2:01 PM #

I totally agree with the Glennon decision. But IF RW should decide to return, I’d rather see him in somewhat of an Olin Hannum role – RB with pass option plays (his running ability would serve well here), backup WR w/end-around pass plays, backup DB (maybe?), as well as QB backup. RW showed last year that spending the time in baseball that he did (which decision I support) impacted his play well into the FB season. But this would give Glennon (and the rest of the altered O) maximum time to be ready to go at the beginning of the season, and RW could certainly contribute in several ways early as I have described. Considering Glennon’s apparent ability, this would to me be the best of both worlds giving Glennon two years as starter.

  17. JSRy2k 02/03/2011 at 2:23 PM #

Glad to hear it, I think a delayed decision on RW would have caused too much drama in the clubhouse and eroded some chemistry.

We could be better offensively in 2011 (provided Wallace is replaced well), considering how many OL & RB (esp. Moose) we return. Personally, I look forward to some I-formations and a more consistent running game that opens up play action and gets it done in the red zone.

    Go Glennon!

I think it’s the right decision to make Glennon the starter from the beginning. They’re going to have to change their scheme or something; he can’t run around like Russell did so often. So, to keep things the same in case Russell comes back could be very costly. But, if he does decide to come back, then what do you do? You’ve already got the offense planned around Glennon. You can’t just change it back. If he comes back, it’s for two reasons (that I see): 1) he really loves football and just wants to be around it for one more year (implication: if he starts or just plays part-time, it’s OK, we all just want to have fun and win). 2) he really loves football and wants one more chance to hone his skills and try out the NFL (implication: unless he’s playing full-time – i.e. starting – there’s not as much benefit). If it’s reason 2, then he’s not coming back. If it’s reason 1, he may. It’d be cool to see him come back, but it’d be foolish for the coaches to sit around and hope he did. Good luck, Mike Glennon.

Agreed that RW could be a very valuable asset in these roles, but I don’t see him coming back if these are to be his expected roles (or any others aside from starting QB). IMHO, the decision to come back for another season from a standpoint of risking injury (and putting his future in peril) is difficult enough even if he is assured of starting at QB. Can’t imagine deciding to come back if that’s not the case.

But then again he is an uncommon young man who does not appear to be (as) motivated by such things, so who knows?

  20. ADS95 02/03/2011 at 3:30 PM #

When Russell Wilson demonstrates ability to effectively hit breaking pitches at the Professional level, we’ll know he’s not coming back.

    We shall see.

As for wanting him to be the backup…he has thrown for over 6500 yards and 59 TD’s in the past two seasons (and run for 13 more). Why on earth would you want him to be your backup?

  21. packalum44 02/03/2011 at 7:33 PM #

Wilson has no future in the NFL. His ambitions and determination are good qualities. However, being stubborn and unrealistic are not. I don’t think he has the latter two.

I want to be a professional QB too. I chose a career that better suited my natural abilities. It took some time, but I think the young man has matured and accepted his fate. Anyway, he has the option to enroll in a graduate program and transfer immediately. Just a thought that popped in my head, but he’d be better off finding an SEC school. As a litmus test, if you’re not good enough to earn a starting spot in the SEC what makes you think an NFL team wants you?

Glennon will light it up. This upcoming season and schedule will be good for him and the team.

  23. nocard 02/03/2011 at 11:05 PM #

ADS95………You are the only one on this post with a braincell left. Who in their right mind would not want RW to QB their team. I like Glennon alot. I think he is a better passer than RW. But as far as a winner, RW is as good as they come in the nation. This guy and NCSU’s defense put the team on their backs and brought 9 wins in. Do you really think MG could have done that last year? Yeah, you are going to bench a guy that recorded 72 TDs the past 2 years.? You guys are nuts.

  24. PackerInRussia 02/04/2011 at 12:34 AM #

nocard, I don’t think anyone DOESN’T want Russell Wilson back (at least that’s not what I’m saying). My point is that, given the unlikelihood of his return, they can’t just sit around and hope he comes back. They have to plan as if he’s not and make Glennon “the man.” In my uneducated opinion, though, that means that the offense must be tweaked (just as they did to make it suit RW) and I don’t know how easily you can just throw Russell back in when you’ve had to change it up. There may be some that DON’T want him to come back. I’m not one of those. I just think that if all indications point to him not returning, the wise choice is to move on.

  25. wolfmanmat 02/04/2011 at 8:34 AM #

So, if Russell doesn’t come back, is he worthy of getting his jersey retired? Hada good career at NCSU.
