#4 Duke (16-1, 3-1) at State (11-6, 1-2)
7pm ESPN

For those of you that can’t — or more likely, choose not to — watch, you can check in here throughout the game for updates and random comments. I’ll try to get through the entire game, but no promises.

You can also check out the game thread, or a variety of other topics, on the SFN Forums.

We’ve won three of the last six in Raleigh, so this is a rivalry again. Mike Patrick says so.

Announcers: Mike Patrick and Jay Bilas

Starters
Duke: Smith, Dawkins, Kelly, Singler, Mason Plumless
State: Javi, Brown, Smith, Wood, Leslie

Patrick: “The RBC Center still filling up.” Although no one is making their way down any of the aisles. (Seriously, there aren’t 10,000 people there.)

1st Half
“We will win the ACC and be ranked in the Top 5 before it’s all over” (CJL)…better or worse than Gavin’s comment a few years ago?

15:01 – Duke 11-3. Business as usual. State 1-of-9 FG (11%). Hard to believe, huh.

Apparently Maryland laid the blueprint for beating Duke, and Lowe put the team through two tough days of practice. Now we can rest easy, it’s all under control.

11:32 – Duke 13-12. State on a 9-2 run over the previous 4:10, even after 4:17 scoring drought during which Duke missed four shots and two free throws. Baskets by Smith and Wood cut the lead to one into the TV timeout. State shooting 4-of-19 (21%) FG.

So far, Duke has four blocks and is dominating the boards 16-4, but Duke’s six turnovers have been the equalizer.

9:17 – Duke 27-16. Devils responded with a 14-4 run of their own, mainly by penetrating with ease and taking advantage of State’s sloppy play all around.

7:01 – Duke 32-22. Another field goal drought, 3:23 this time. That makes 7:40 of the 12:59 played during which State has not scored a field goal. 7-of-9 FTs keeping us in it.

I hear circus music.

We have an nearly an entire generation of students that have no idea how raucus this game would have been in Reynolds…win or lose. I never saw us beat Duke or Carolina in Reynolds; in fact, only saw us beat either of them — Carolina in ’98 — once during my entire time at State.

3:54 – Duke 37-26. This is one of those games where it looks like we’re hanging around, but only until Duke starts hitting its perimeter shots. We’re not losing for lack of effort tonight. We’d be winning if we were playing Cincinatti.

We have to be smart on offense or this will get away from us in a hurry. Great analysis, Jay Bilas. Being smart isn’t exactly out trademark.

Half – All Duke, 42-28. Nolan Smith leads all scorers with 10, while the only Dukie that didn’t score in the first half was Wojo. Tracy leads State with eight points, but as a team, State shot only 8-of-37 (22%) versus Duke’s 15-of-30 (50%), while hitting only 3-of-12 3PT, so it could’ve been worse. Duke also has seven blocks.

2nd Half
I wish I hadn’t comitted myself to this now, but that’s my fault, not yours, so I’ll press on. It’ll be over soon.

Maybe it’s because I’m old (31), but what’s with the straight-bill ball caps the kids wear nowadays? Is that the trend like the paying a premium for “worn” Abercrombie hats when I was a freshman?

Leslie 0-6, Brown 0-6, Harrow 0-5.

18:12 – Duke 44-35. State opens the half on a 7-2 run.

14:48 – Duke 52-46. So far this half, State has executed a similar gameplan to last year’s win over Duke, scoring in the paint and crashing the boards. State cut the lead to five around the 16:10 mark. Seth Curry is on the bench with four fouls. Wood has six points in the half and the Pack is showing a lot of intensity, which is refreshing.

10:58 – Duke 63-50. Well, hope y’all enjoyed that mini-run, because Duke countered with a 11-4 run of its own. State has cut the lead to five twice now, and is making it hard for Duke to score in the paint, contesting every basket, but Duke took advantage of a couple lazy and sloppy possessions to push the lead back to 13. Dawkins (3), Singler (3), and Curry (4) are all in foul trouble.

Does anyone actually watch the NBA?

7:27 – Duke 70-56. We’re shooting 31% but leading by eight at the free throw line. CJL and Wood have both come on strong in the half, with 13 and 12, respectively. We’re actually not playing too bad; with a little better shot selection, this is a close game.

Looks like a decent crowd, late arrivers — maybe 15,000?

5:06 – Duke 77-66. This has been a very physical game, and State has held its own, but just hasn’t managed that much-needed extended run after cutting the lead to five earlier.

3:56 – Duke 82-70. This one is over, but it’s the most fight I’ve seen all season, so I’m going to see it through. It’s weird how that works; Florida State only beat us by 13, but it was never that close; this one is 12, and feels much closer. Miles Plumlee has 13, just one off his career-high. Insert joke here.

Bilas says only dogs can hear Harrow’s voice, it’s so deep. Isn’t it the other way around?

Final – Duke 92-78 (ESPN.com Box Score). It took 30 mins, but State finally started trading baskets with Duke, but it was just too late. I really want to be pissed about this one, but after a rough beginning, it actually went about as well as we could realistically expect.

If you got this far, then you’ve probably got the stomach to peruse a variety of topics on the SFN Forums.

Look here’s the deal. Sid has 4 more games that will define his future at State. And yes that INCLUDES the AWAY Carolina game.

After watching our boys play tonight. I must give Lowe more then I have been giving him. The only thing I think this team needs is someone else that can hit Three’s more often. I belive they have that coming next year. I know it is always coming next year, but dam I have waited 5 years with Lowe and I feel I can wait one more. I feel like these youngsters will be great next year with one year under their belt. I don’t feel its NCAA or bust, but after next year its top 2 ACC and atleast 5 seed in the NCAA’s. I am hanging on for dear life though. I love my Pack and I hope to see a NCAA bid soon, but I dont think its time for Lowe to go just yet.

  3. swamppack 01/19/2011 at 10:20 PM #

It appeared in a very subtle way even the ESPN announcers were feeling the pain of Pack fans as they watched our athleticism coupled with our severe lack of a game plan. Just what could a coach who knew his X’s and O’s well and knew how to motivate do with this year’s squad? Oh the pain of what could be!!

  4. GAWolf 01/19/2011 at 10:21 PM #

Oh I am in Raleigh, BP. I live here.

You won’t like me… I typically fish with shad (threadfin/pointednose). One day when I have the time, I’m going to head to Gaston (my home and where we catch bait) and bring a live-well full of shad back to Harris. My guess is the fishing would be unreal.

  5. BassPacker 01/19/2011 at 10:30 PM #

Harris don’t need anymore shad, lol. So much out there now, the bass have gotten fat and lazy !

I guess there was a moral victory tonite if and only we continue to see the same intensity and play for 2 halves from now on. Maybe Sid needs to do his halftime speech at the beginning of the game.

  6. PackMan2012 01/19/2011 at 10:58 PM #

Maybe I’m more of a Lowe supporter than I should be, but I don’t know how you could be more proud of a team in a 14 point loss. They played well enough to beat anyone else in the conference. I think you’ll learn a ton about this team Sunday afternoon. If they can play as well as they did in the second half with 8,000 less people in the stands against Miami, I might feel they’re starting to turn the corner. Especially if we see more of the Howell/Leslie/Smith combination.

Now that we have absorbed another nba type loss in college: ie, little fan support,9i got an e-mail telling me yesterday i could have two tickets to this game for 35.00 a piece) and players just shooting bricks and the opponent toying with us, we need to get some serious talk going on hear:
I mean really Mark Thomas(on nc state radio”” we need to get our home games here, miami and clemson”” were not out of it yet””?? ) How low do we have to go that we HAVE TO BEAT MIAMI AND CLEMSON IN BASKETBALL to get to 500 in the conference ??? A coaching change is needed badly. I mean, nothing against EL Sid,but did you hear him at halftime on espn??”our guys need to go strong to the basket??”” Is the word defense in his vocab???
I mean, enough is enough with this nba retread.

New coaching prospects for the 2011-2012 season:
Billy Gillespe: sure he was fired at kentucky but he got a buyout and he was a dang good coach at texas am and he is an experienced college coach, besides steve lavin got fired too.

Steve Wojo :duke assistant: yes i know, he is a duke guy, but he has been an assistant head coach at duke for 12 years and that is 12 more years of experience than el sid.

Chris Collins :yes another duke assistant, but this guy like wojo was an intense player and his father was on as well and an intense coach and i think he could be the most successful coach if he thinks K will stay on at Duke, which i think K will, i really don’t think K is anywhere near retirement, i think he will be at duke until he is physically unfit to coach.

Phil Ford: yes a carolina guy and yes i can hear people say ???Waht the F@@ but listen to the logic. He has years of experience in the college game and been an assistant or a pro assistant and can recruit and knows today’s players.plus he has a drive to prove himself while being passed over at UNC.

Anyone have any other suggestions as to whom the coach could be?
I mean we can get a better selection only when the ad decides to open the pocketbook.

How about Jay Wright at Villanova? Heck even Clemson, Boston College, Miami, Florida State, V tech, Virginia have better coaches than us(wake, gtech and state are the worse)

  8. BJD95 01/19/2011 at 11:02 PM #

It is beyond depressing to hear multiple people talk about being “proud” of our basketball team – in their coach’s FIFTH SEASON – for playing hard on ONE END of the court for ONE HALF of the game.

  9. mak4dpak 01/19/2011 at 11:13 PM #

Wow, can’t believe some of you can accept this loss, because it is only 14, and we still have a visit there. Is losing now acceptable if it is not bad? 5 years of futility. Defend Lowe? Another year? NO WAY! Sidney needs to go yesterday. We do have talent, but no coach. Guess everyone has forgotten what it was like to be a winner, it has been so long. And will be longer if Sid isn’t out after this season. I can’t take it anymore. No more excuses from the coach. Somebody needs to step up? (Sid’s words). It is you Sidney, who needs to step it up, and you haven’t and never will. Just look at your record in the conference. Inexcusable! I am ready for change. And please take your time and find us a winner to take the program over. Don’t give us another Fowler fowlup! Wait, maybe there is hope. Debbie Yow! We put our trust in you, to find him, or schedule Wake Forest every game.

I was a little bit encouraged this evening. Javi just doesn’t have acc skills and physical ablities. T. Smith, R. Howell, R. Harrow, CJ Leslie and S. Wood seemed to be our best team. As for Lowe? Maybe he is trying to put together a team with too many freshman. Is it all his fault? No. Starting 3 freshman, there must be some mental lapses.

  11. mak4dpak 01/19/2011 at 11:31 PM #

Kentucky pretty much lost their whole team from last year. Lots of new faces in the starting line up. But are they losing? Again, it is all about the coaching. Yow please don’t listen to the Lowe defenders. I want to return to the RBC. But not under the present coaching staff. Why waste my money? I would rather watch the women play. Poor Sidney? You got to be kiddin! Poor fans!

  12. 61Packer 01/20/2011 at 12:04 AM #

I’m beginning to believe, after sitting through another red blazer root canal in the RBC Center tonight, that not only the coaching staff but the entire TEAM needs to be jettisoned. We simply need to start over from scratch. We’ve got a bunch of athletes whose knowledge of college basketball fundamentals may be even worse than that of their coaches.

This team without a leader is also hunting for a perimeter defense. But if they ever do find one, they’ll hold on to it about as well as they’ve held on to the ball in the past two decades.

State’s shooting and shot selection continue to be horrendous. I saw nearly a dozen Wolfpack bricks from well inside the free throw line. All could have been pullup jumpers, but none of the shooters used the glass, something Duke did all night.

CJL doesn’t know what a pullup jumper is, and whenever he has the chance for one, he instead drives to the basket to attempt a dunk, usually losing the ball. Other than Wood and Harrow, do we have a 50% FT shooter? Maybe Gonzo, but at least he didn’t get many chances tonight, one of the few bright spots.

And as for Wood, if I were him, I’d transfer the hell out of here after this season. Even if Low is canned, and don’t bet that he will be, Wood will never realize his potential playing with this bunch of playground rejects. He is our best weapon, but the State coaches and players don’t seem to realize half the time that Wood is even on the court, except when he gets 2 fouls in the first half. Duke never lost track of where Singler and Smith were.

In Duke, I saw a basketball program tonight that has completely overshadowed and surpassed our program at just about ever level of the game. Worse, we have an administration here that mirrors Wolfpack fans; both EXPECT to lose, and neither seems to give a damn anymore.

But it was a moral victory for the home team at the gate- the usually empty third deck appeared full, thanks to the sea of blue fans who were also abundant in the LTR lower level seats.

In yr 5, that anyone can be encouraged by “good effort” that netted a 14 pt loss, leaves me wondering are you masochists? We’re a poor team in a poor conference. In todays environment, there are lots of teams that lose their lineup one year, reload with Frosh, and put together decent years with which to build a program on. We seem to be content to be average at best and the whipping post of the top tier of the ACC. We play horrendous D, we don’t shoot well from the floor or the line, what progress is this coaching staff developing? None!!

Watching Lowe on the sidelines reminds me of a soccer dad filling in for a coach that was called away for an emergency. The soccer dad has played rec soccer a little in his youth, but since he has never coached, he is just trying to mimic what the usual coach does, and wants with all his heart for team to win.

Bless his heart, I feel for the guy. Unfortunately we put him in a situation that is a bit over his head.

And how it is that neither of our freshman guards can hit a midrange j?

  18. mak4dpak 01/20/2011 at 12:31 AM #

I will not throw in the towel on our freshmen class, and they are talented. They are only doing what they are taught. If they had a coach who knew how to mold a team and its players, we wouldn’t be on here having to complain. And it ain’t over yet. Oh and the time on the state fan nation blog site needs to be reset, in case you hadn’t noticed.

  19. JeremyH 01/20/2011 at 12:35 AM #

    “And it ain’t over yet.”

    That’s the sad part.

Did Lorenzo Brown play tonight? I’m only half-kidding… we need him to attack the basket more IMO. Overall, I’m not disappointed… Duke was firing on all cylinders tonight. The Plumlee’s had a horseshoe up there ass tonight… It’s hard to beat lucky. My Duke friend’s kept texting me throughout the game shocked that the Plumlee’s were having the games they were. Oh yeah and the Duke fan’s aren’t the asshole’s those other blue fans are…

  21. redwolf87 01/20/2011 at 12:45 AM #

I honestly do not see where we are better than last year. And that is about as chilling an indictment as you can come up with, especially in light of all this level 1 talent we now have.

  22. xphoenix87 01/20/2011 at 12:48 AM #

You guys realize that being proud of the team is not the same thing as defending Sid’s coaching, right?

Was I disappointed that we lost? Absolutely. Am I encouraged by what I saw in the second half (and some of the first half)? Very much so.

Even though we were badly outscored the first half, I wasn’t terribly dismayed because we were getting good shots. When Harrow, Brown and Leslie bulk up a bit, those shots are going to fall, and they’re going to be ridiculously hard to stop. Also, if Leslie just shoots 65-70% from the free throw line, he’s going to be a monster.

The second half was the best half of basketball we’ve played this year. Thank the good lord we finally saw 30+ minutes of Ryan Harrow, and man did it show. He controlled the offense to a degree that Javi can’t even dream about. Tracy is obviously still a bit out of shape, but his offensive game is so much more diverse than last year. The ability to step out and hit the jumper or drive and finish is something he didn’t have last year. I’m not nearly as bothered by the defense because I think there really was a lot of effort there, and there’s a difference between having FSU (one of the worst offensive teams in a major conference) hang 50 on you and having Duke (a top 10 offense) hang 50 on you.

I don’t think we’ll make the tournament. I don’t think Sid is a good coach. I do think the team showed a great effort tonight against a really good team. I do think the freshmen showed that they could all make a massive jump next year simply by getting a bit stronger. Overall, I’m encouraged. So shoot me.

  23. Baccapacker 01/20/2011 at 1:13 AM #

Very late post, drunk from watching the game and poker, but my thoughts are that this was the kinda game I would have accepted and tolerated had we been 3-0 in the conference by now. This was unfortunaly jus one of those inspriational games we see from sids teams every year. it means nothing, we are 1-3 now in the conference for the 5th year in a row and we could have won a game that we were very much in with a little better coaching. At one point me and my buddies all noticed that sid had about the worst lineup on the court that any of us could assemble without going to the 3rd string scrubs. I think it was javi, brown, williams, howell, and vandenburg. Brown and howell were the only potential scoring threats and the lineup, especially against duke, was just a terrible combination as a whole.

  24. skippyjon jones 01/20/2011 at 1:15 AM #

    BJD95,

just because i’m an engineer…”ONE END of the court for ONE HALF of the game” = 10 minutes…total.

    It’s not the team’s fault.

    Let’s revisit in 4 games.

  25. NCSU@UNCG 01/20/2011 at 4:09 AM #

Javi didn’t play bad at all in the slim minutes he got… and Harrow played well especially defensively but he was 4-13… that’s awful. I like the 5 assists and only 1 turnover. Harrow’s offensive production should pick up against anyone other than Duke, they are just a different horse. Lo Brown was a non factor. Tracy played well, as did Howell. Leslie was awful in the first half, got it together a bit in the second. Still needs to learn to shoot a free throw as often as he goes to the line. Really liked his intensity though. Wood kept us in the game for stretches with his 3 ball. Some positives were that we only had 9 turnovers to Duke’s 11… also 7 steals to their 4. There’s improvement… small as it is.
