Football recruiting rolls along with three strong commitments

Don’t look now, but NC State’s football recruiting seems to have hit stride the last few weeks as the Wolfpack looks to land about 20 players come signing day in early February.

The positive momentum continued tonight and over the weekend as Coach Tom O’Brien has landed some impressive talent

Tonight, State got a big one when wide receiver, Hakeem Flowers committed (link).

Flowers is from Greenville (SC) Wade Hampton and had previously committed to Michigan. He reportedly had narrowed his revised list to the Wolverines, Wolfpack, LSU Tigers and Oregon Ducks. ESPN says Flowers was also recruited by, “Notre Dame, Michigan State, Florida State, Miami-FL, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Maryland, Auburn, South Carolina, Duke, North Carolina, Cincinnati, Nebraska, Syracuse, Baylor, Missouri, Louisville, Rutgers, Arkansas, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Kansas State, West Virginia, Iowa, Missouri, Arizona, Pittsburgh, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Wake Forest, BYU”

Scout.com ranks the 6’3 WR as a 3-star prospect and the #110 wide receiver in the country while ESPN has Flowers as a 4-star and the #29 wide receiver in the country. Considering his list of offers and interest…I’m inclined to trust ESPN here and wonder what Scout.com is smoking?

Earlier today, State landed a defensive tackle to help insulate the blow from Thomas Niles’ earlier decommitment when the Wolfpack landed Chris Jones from Jacksonville (FL) Raines HS. Jones is about 6’5 and 265 pounds and is listed as a Top 50 defensive tackle and 3-star prospect by Scout.com. He also had an impressive list of suitors that included UNC-CH, East Carolina, Tennessee, Miami. Iowa State, Louisville and, Rutgers.

Lastly, the Wolfpack also picked up Rodman Noel a few days ago. Noel is a 6’3, 206 pound safety that has our coaching staff very excited. He is listed as a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com and originally signed with Maryland in February of 2010 but failed to qualify academically. After spending the year at Milford Academy (NY) he re-committed and then de-committed to the Terps while also considering Mississippi State and Miami.

NC State will take no more than three more commitments in this recruiting class.

Very nice offer list Mr Flowers. Scout needs to adjust their numbers, but the point has been made that there definately are a lot more 3 STAAAAH players out there than fours or fives.

Either way, these 3 are great recruits. Maybe one or two left before signing day….however I like how this class is rounding out.

    Welcome to the Pack!

5* LB Stephone Anthony is scheduled to visit State next Saturday. He may be a long shot, but I find it intriguing that we may be his last visit before signing day. This class would jump way up with a star like Anthony and two more solid recruits. I guess we will see.

Anthony is a long shot…but, we definitely need a stud LB and have a spot just sitting there for him.

In other good news, and as we have discussed before, looks like we are really making waves with the current junior class and are attracting interest from a lot of highly regarded recruits. We’ll keep our eyes out for more.

As far as ranking of classes, how the heck is Carolina still hauling in a Top 15 class with all the recent goings on in that cesspool?

Glad to hear TOB and Co. are making a late push.

^ You really have to ask?

Those poor kids believe what they are told. They genuinely believe that everything is going to be alright.

^ It is very possible that the new kids, and more importantly, the upperclassmen, could transfer without penalty. This, perhaps, would be the most passive/subtle way to punish UNC harshly. Let players transfer without penalty. It seems questionable whether the NCAA will rule before next season though.

    Excerpt:
Additionally, the language of the report written by the NCAA could allow for certain players to bolt the program without penalty. According to Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News, “[i]f the NCAA committee on infractions recommends it, any USC football [player] with two years of eligibility or less could transfer without sitting out a year because of the two-year bowl ban.”

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a player or two transfer to State from UNC??
    Hilarious!

Amazing what happens when you win – even if you are a ‘bad recruiter’.

Do we realy want the mental and emotional maturity that goes with a recruit who signed with UNC in the first place. Do we really need to associate with people who knowingly wanted to be involved with what has been going on in Chapel Hill.

  12. packalum44 01/24/2011 at 1:43 PM #

^ Broad brush you’re using there OldEnough. UNC has it share of thugs but most players are likely good kids caught up in a corrupt organization.

I doubt any of the upperclassmen would transfer to their rival anyway. Better chance an incoming freshman would, but again, it is questionable whether sanctions will be handed down before next season.

No concerns about the overall class whatsoever, TOB’s doin’ great! His on-field results give us reason to relax this time of year no matter what. Check this out, a little ‘proof’ of his reputation as an ‘under the radar’ guy…
    On-Field result:
    2010-11: 9-4, #25 national ranking
    Recruiting ‘results’ (per scout):
    2010: #47
    2009: #39
    2008: #29
    2007: #60
    2006: #42

TOB has shown he can get the most out of his players and the 2012 class is shaping up to be a good one.

Benson Browne, a 3* tight end out of Cincinatti has apparently committed.

These guys are great additions to the class and the type I’d like to see more of (if not better ones). I know we like to tout the exceptions to the rules in Nate and RW but I think we all agree we have far more 2 stars that play like 2 stars than play like Nate. The reason we are excited about Glennon is because of how highly regarded he was.

Here’s to making the most with what we have and continuing to add quality players like these to the cupboard.

^ You’re going to have to WTNY b/c these were some of the highest rated we had on our board. Small chance at 4/5 star Stephone Anthony and maybe another 4 star or two not on recruiting sites.
