2012 football recruiting has begun

NC State gets first football commitment of 2012.  (Link)

Southern Nash football coach Brian Foster envisions junior Josh Sessoms developing into an outstanding college football player.

Sessoms, a 6-foot-3, 190 pound athlete, committed to N.C. State this week, becoming the Wolfpack’s first commitment in the class of 2012.

"He is long and lanky now, but with the way that he works and his dedication, I can see him as a 215, 220-pound safety," Foster said. "I think he is going to do really well on the college level."

Sessoms played some quarterback last year but was more outstanding as a safety, the position where he was a starter as a sophomore when the Firebirds reached the state semifinals.

He has the strength and desire to be a physical tackler but also the speed to play in the secondary.

"In our league, he has to do a lot of run support," Foster said. "He is very good at coverage, too."

Foster said he believes Sessoms will continue to get bigger, stronger and faster.

"He is a great kid. His teammates and his teachers like him. He is the type of player that helps everybody play better whenever he is on the field," Foster said.

Sessoms is a Northern Nash guy from Bailey (where Julius Peppers is from).

GREAT SIZE, athleticism and versatility. Heard Virginia Tech really liked him (offer?) as did Notre Dame.  As is the TOB mold, supposedly a solid student.

I don’t know anything about ‘stars’…but, I’d be shocked if he were worse than a 3-star and maybe could be a 4-star.

Sounds like we’ve picked up a fantastic first commit for 2012 — which, should be a a very strong class based on how well we did this year.

We’ve been following football recruiting for a few months in this thread, and actually had the news on Sessoms last week (on  page 7-8).  It is interesting to see the level of concern of some fans gradually subside.

Southern Nash, not Northern…but yeah, this kid was an impact player when I saw him in person this past season. Tall, very quick and seemed to be involved in every play on defense…seems to enjoy contact which will be a welcome characteristic for our developing secondary.

If the young athlete signed with Butchie at UNC CH ( Hometown located Rivials.com) would instantly add a star to his rating…

Given our strong finish and 4 straight against unc-ch, shouldn’t we started seeing the funnel for nc talent forming?

I’m just anxious to see how we round out 2011. We have stellar kicker and punter coming in, and hopefully some diamonds from the rough, but no heavily rated recruits.

    2012 better be spectacular.

I want character kids coming in – Keep the thugs going elsewhere ! Give us champions in the classroom, champions in the community – TOB and staff will coach ’em up !

Not surprised that 2011 is not all that stellar. We came off a bad season and TOB seemed very happy with the 2010 class calling it a 100% class – meaning he thought that 100% of the class would play and contribute over the coming years (rare in college football).

There will probably be a few surprises (positive ones) this year before signing day, but I expect next years class to be much better.

    Just my 2 cents.

here’s hoping the 2011-2012 season works out well.
the NFL non-season will leave a big weekend gap.

I don’t know if it has subsided or if that horse has been beaten to death. I thought it was interesting how the star power of the punter is celebrated by the very people who bashed those looking for star power in other impact positions.

I’m still hoping for the best but take away the freak and RW and we are stuck with our slightly above average players and an outstanding coach/talent evaluator/developer. Hopefully, that combo is enough to get it done in 2011.

    Prowling Woofie,

you nailed it. Coach O’B has always been this kind of recruiter. He did just fine (!) at BC mostly with 2* and 3* recruits, didn’t he? He had a very high WIN-to-recruit/star/rating ratio there.

I like it. He will eventually pluck more big-time recruits – IF he is happy with them and IF there is any justice in this world and IF he needs them.

    Watch the OL grow.

On another note… a NCSU recruit from a few years ago (probably 2 or 3 star recruit) caught 5 passes for 96 yards for the Jets, which is 49% of all the Jet passing yardage, in their W over the evil Pats.

Gone from Raleigh, but not forgotten. Another big day for JC! Keep it up.

^ And couldn’t happen to a nicer guy – Cotchery’s a great representative of “The Wolfpack Way” 🙂

I like that. “The Wolfpack Way”. We should push that more.
