Could Cowher end up in Houston?

Would be awesome news for Mario Williams/Wolfpack lovers.

Report: Cowher eyes three teams

As Bill Cowher nears the fourth anniversary of his resignation from the Steelers, Chris Mortensen of ESPN has linked Cowher to a trio of teams.

Cowher’s wish list, per Mort, consists of the Dolphins, Texans, and Giants.

Former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis previously linked Cowher to the Giants job, and since Bettis knew that Cowher would call it quits after the 2006 season before the 2006 season even started, we’ve deferred to the Bus in this regard.  The problem, of course, is that the Giants remain solidly in contention for a playoff berth, which would most likely ensure Tom Coughlin’s return for 2011.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has been pushing the Cowher-to-Houston notion for a while.  It all depends on whether coach Gary Kubiak gets fired.  Earlier this week, owner Bob McNair didn’t sound like a guy who was thinking about making a change.

The Dolphins could be the most intriguing possibility.  With Bill Parcells gone, owner Stephen Ross could clean out coach Tony Sparano and G.M. Jeff Ireland and hand the keys to Cowher, whose first order of business would be to try to lure Kevin Colbert and/or Omar Khan from the Pittsburhg front office.

Whether a job opens in Miami depends, as we pointed out in the Week 15 Friday 10-pack, whether the Dolphins can improve upon their 1-5 home record against the Bills and Lions.  Making it to the playoffs wouldn’t hurt, either.

I think I just heard the ropes tighten around some Panthers fans necks

OK, I have a serious question. In the NFL, or Not For Long, what does it take for Kubiak to get fired? The Texans are the best team in the league…once they are either 21 points down in a game or are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Did I see correctly that they have been down by at least 14 points and come back to either tie or take the lead and yet lose a whopping 6 times this year? That is crazy.

The Texans vs. Ravens MNF game was the quintessential Houston game.

I would love for the Texans to make the playoffs. I want to see Mario Williams, DeMarco Ryans, and Arian Foster in late January.

I don’t see if happening under Kubiak.

It would be great for Cowher to go there.

In what bizarro world does Kubiak NOT get fired? Not to say he’s a bad coach, but both parties are in clear need of a fresh start. Would love to have Kubiak come home to Denver (he was John Elway’s long-time and very popular backup).

The Richardsons don’t want a strong head coach, or an expensive one. And if Marty Hurney is inexplicably safe (solely due to his personal relationship with Jerry), then what self-respecting coach is going to even consider the Panthers? A cheap owner, a shit-for-brains GM with power and immunity. Definite recipe for failure.

For the record, I would also love John Fox in Denver, too. But I’m betting he gets the Dolphins gig.

I never thought Cowher was an option here. Don’t get me wrong, he’d be great. But I just didn’t see this one materializing for the Panthers. If the Panthers can get a guy like Jeff Fisher or the Jim Harbaugh/Andrew Luck combo, then I’d be very happy.

Cowher to the Texans would be great news. They are a vastly underachieving franchise with loads of talent. The defense needs a serious facelift. He can provide just that.

Part of me would love to see Fox in Miami. But I also have the gut feeling that he may be on the downslope…

It’s really a shame that the Texans have yet to get over the playoff hump. In retrospect, last year was their year to get into the playoffs, with the Jets essentially getting two wins by forfeit against division champions on the road to nose them out of the final spot. Kubiak has done a lot to build the franchise since he inherited what had to be the worst roster in the NFL. This year’s disaster lays squarely at the feet of the defense. I thought Frank Bush had turned the defense around last year with their performance over the final 13 games, but this year has been a disaster.

Bob McNair really likes Kubiak and also recognizes how much better shape things were in at the beginning of this season than when Kubiak arrived. The combination of two years worth of contract to eat and the steep price Cowher will likely command, makes me think there is only a very slim chance that Cowher ends up in Houston. You have to combine those financial realities with the likelihood of a work stoppage to begin to see the line of reasoning that would lead to Kubiak coming back for another year. I can tell you that the fan base has already fired Kubiak and McNair will lose ALL of his accumulated goodwill for bringing the NFL back to Houston if he doesn’t fire Kubiak at the end of this season. I would love to see Bill Cowher as the coach of the Texans next season. I just don’t think it will happen.

If the Chargers don’t make the playoffs I could see Norv getting the boot. Would love to see Cowher and Rivers together.

It would be great to see Houson and SD with new coaches on the sidelines next season.

Note to Bill Cowher. Keep your phone close. Mr. Ross will be calling soon.
