Bowl tune up – Basketball & Pics [Updated 4:10pm]

Kick-off is just over 150 minutes away.

You can click here for some pictures from Orlando to get you in the mood. And, please don’t ignore this FANTASTIC game preview put together by our resident WV Pack. He should know!!

Phil Steele has a nice preview of tonight’s game available here. He picks the Mountaineers 30-20.

Sidney Lowe’s men’s basketball team tips off against Alabama A&M at 4pm EST. Will this be the day the boys finally have the ‘nuclear loss’ with which they have flirted so much in recent games? This message board thread discusses our most recent 2 point win over Delaware State, whom Clemson destroyed by 33 points last night (76-41).

WRAL has a live blog here.

Alabama A&M, Martin Methodist, and Tuskegee. That’s who the Bulldogs have beaten this year. If there was ever a time when the Wolfpack needed to come out and kick some tail against a far inferior opponent.

N.C. State has lost all its meaningful games, and has struggled to beat teams like Youngstown State, Fairleigh Dickinson and Delaware State.

You can actually watch the game live here.

State leads 10-4 with 14:30 in the first half.

    Question for anyone out there?

Has CJ Leslie EVER passed the ball on a drive to the basket?

3 straight possessions he has driven the paint and not dished.

  3. StateFans 12/28/2010 at 5:02 PM #

Don’t want to appear very critical — to his credit, Leslie has really elevated his activity on the glass and has done a great job rebounding for us recently (and today).

line up of Harrow – CJ Williams – Lorenzo Brown – CJ Leslie – Richard Howell moving the ball as crisply as we’ve seen all year on offense. Nice ball movement.

Pack takes 20-8 lead with 7-0 burst in last 71 seconds.

If CJ Leslie learns how to pass when driving, he will be un-stopable:)

CJ is a black hole when he gets it anywhere near the paint, but I think that is a function of youth. I thought the same thing about Tracy as well.

  8. txpack 12/28/2010 at 5:16 PM #

Alabama A&M is a bad team, we still gave up few offensive rebounds.

  9. Lunatic Fringe 12/28/2010 at 5:16 PM #

It is nice to see a presence FINALLY on the offensive boards though.

  10. txpack 12/28/2010 at 5:19 PM #

Howell made a few nice passes!

I know some people stated early in the year that Scott Wood is overrated on this blog, which struck me as a really odd statement. I shudder to think where we would be without Scott Wood.

FYI – Monte “Toe” according to radio guy covering for normal guys.

  12. StateFans 12/28/2010 at 5:24 PM #

    * I don’t know who said Wood was over-rated. i think he is under-rated. He is our Most Valuable Player. (Getting challenged for that by Lorenzo Brown).

    * I heard Monte “Tow” was there. Kind of scary.

Scott Wood – It was a post on one of the blogs very early in the season (not necessarily a normal author/admin). I would have to do some research to find it.

Speaking of mis-speaking: I was driving back home today and listening to ESPN on way home. The guy stated that he was looking forward to the WVU-North Carolina game tonight…yada yada…especially given the issues they had with NCAA. He went to the break and IMMEDIATELY apologized for his error. It was clear that he had been reminded by NC State fans that WVU was NOT playing UNC.

State up 42-18 with 40 secs in half

  15. Wufpacker 12/28/2010 at 5:30 PM #

As a player, Monte Towe’s last name was very, very, very frequently (and often repeatedly) pronounced “Toe”. It was always very annoying listening to the play by play when they did that.

  16. Lunatic Fringe 12/28/2010 at 5:31 PM #

42- 20 – It must be the coaching of Coach Toe

*On Monte “Toe” – I guess the issue is that this is NC State radio. I would hope that we could get it right.

  17. Wufpacker 12/28/2010 at 5:35 PM #

22 pt lead at the half would be much more encouraging if they weren’t out-rebounding us 23-21 (12-6 on the offensive end).

  18. StateFans 12/28/2010 at 5:36 PM #

Allowed 10 offensive rebounds for A&M…resulting in 12 of their 20 points.

  19. Lunatic Fringe 12/28/2010 at 5:38 PM #

    A&M are shooting 24% from field (0-10 from 3)…whew …

No nuclear loss. We won by 30+ like we’re supposed to. And we are still without Tracy Smith. I still say we need to wait until the season is over before we pass final judgment on Sidney. We’re inconsistent, and that is to be expected when so many of our key players are freshmen.

  21. BJD95 12/28/2010 at 6:43 PM #

    Sidney Lowe sucks. Period.

I am sooooo ready for our brief football-related respite from hoops!!

I emailed the Media Director for the WP AD dept and also Gary H and Tony H. The media director popped right back to me that Tony and Gary were all over the Monte Towe name botch and that they had personally talked to the Commentators to inform them of their Gaffe….

    Dontcha love the Internet.

I did not not make the trip to Orlando due to travel issues….and some other things. My Daughter scoffed up on my BB Tickets. Was this a real team or a Jr. High squad or a JV team. It sounded great on the radio. It also sounded like Santy brought Sidney a REAL team….or maybe Santy brought him a big bottle of CHEMISTRY…..I hope they all took a big drink, but wisely conserved enough to get them through the rest of the season.

Tuned in too late for the starting line-up….who were the starters….did Javi start?

    GO PACK

When the coaching staff demands that Leslie not go 1 on 5 since it is VERY VERY VERY low percentage chance at scoring (even if he was Kobe Bryant) and when he learns to make a lay up, he’s going to be excellent.

I can’t wait for this Bowl game to kick off. Go Wolpfack!

Team actually looked ready to play today – they came out focused. That might have had something to do with how inferior A&M was, but still a welcome change.

Defensive effort was ok for the most part save for a couple of lackadaisical stretches, though A&M did miss plenty of open 3’s.

I noticed the same as everyone else in regards to Leslie – I don’t want to be too critical b/c I love the aggression. It’s a lot better than just standing around looking lost. Stay aggressive – if we could just get him to learn when to take it to the hole and what a good shot is versus staying within the offense then he can be really scary. The guy really is a beast … please by all means stay aggressive though.

All that said, even without Tracy there is *way* too much talent on this team to look the way we have at times this season. Today was encouraging because we looked aggressive for the most part, but A&M is a far inferior team. Only real disappointing stretch came in the second half when we pushed it to a 30 point lead and just looked like we quit b/c we thought we had done enough. We’ve got to change whatever attitude issues that exist.

Still, a good day for a Pack fan.
