[8:45 update] It’s Official – Wolfpack vs Mountaineers in Orlando

It’s official.

This will be the third time the Wolfpack and Mountaineers have faced each other in a postseason bowl game. On Dec. 29, 1972, at the end of Lou Holtz’s first season at NC State, the Wolfpack throttled the Mountaineers, 49-12, for the biggest postseason margin of victory in school history. On Dec. 31, 1975, in the final game for both Holtz and West Virginia coach Bobby Bowden at their respective schools, the Mountaineers took a 13-10 victory.

NC State’s series with the Mountaineers consists nine games, dating back to 1914, when the school was still known as the North Carolina School of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (NC A&M). The Aggies won the inaugural game against West Virginia, 26-13. But the Mountaineers own a slim 4-5 all-time record in the series.

According to Florida Citrus Sports Committee, the teams for Champs Sports Bowl have been selected but won’t be revealed until 8:30pm tonight.  I don’t have any clue why.  We will keep this updated throughout the afternoon, but bowl destinations are coming into focus this afternoon and we haven’t heard anything that concerns us or differs from the confidence we expressed in this morning’s entry.

To the contrary, we are ready to go live with our projections in which we have very strong confidence —

Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech

Chik Fil A Bowl: Florida State

Champs Bowl: NC State vs West Virginia

Sun Bowl: Miami vs Notre Dame

Meineke Car Care: Clemson vs South Florida

Music City Bowl: North Carolina vs Mississippi State or Tennessee

Military Bowl: Maryland vs East Carolina

Independence Bowl: Georgia Tech

Fight Hunger Bowl: Boston College

Stay tuned to SFN and this entry for more.

Reminder for you to follow our Twitter Feed available here.

The afternoon has evolved to support SFN’s bowl projections and things are becoming very clear with the following two developments:

(1) As expected, Miami will tackle Notre Dame in the Sun Bowl (Link) re-confirming a match-up of NC State vs West Virginia in the Champs Bowl.

(2) Maryland is finalized in the Military Bowl vs East Carolina.

Additionally, UNC’s bowl announcement is expected to come around 5:30pm. Will be interesting if they get marquee ‘name’ in Tennessee, or if they get a tougher draw in Mississippi State.

6:30pm

The Chik Fil A Bowl had previously announced they would take the loser of the ACC Championship Game, thereby giving the Wolfpack no shot at playing in Atlanta. They have selected South Carolina to battle Florida State. (Link) It became official this evening. (Link)

The Charleston Daily Mail is reporting that West Virginia has accepted their invitation to play in Orlando:

WVU accepted an invitation to the Champs Sports Bowl on Sunday, according to multiple sources. An announcement was to be made by Florida Citrus Sports, the organizing body in charge of the Champs Sports Bowl, later in the night.

Now No. 21 in the coaches’ poll and No. 22 in the Associates press poll, WVU is expected to play North Carolina State at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

So, based on what we know from all of the other bowl selections, there is no other place for NC State play other than the Champs Bowl in Orlando.

Congratulations Wolfpack!

  4. Wulfpack 12/05/2010 at 5:32 PM #

I’ll take it! Great match-up. Can’t wait for bowl season.

  5. Phang 12/05/2010 at 5:53 PM #

I like the Md v ECU matchup (and NCSU v WV too)

  6. Six Pack 12/05/2010 at 5:55 PM #

WVU would be a good match up for the Pack. I like that much better than the possibility of Toledo.

The Champs Sports Bowl is just trying to ruin my Christmas aren’t they?

  8. wolfonthehill 12/05/2010 at 6:19 PM #

So half our losses are to the Military Bowl… sad…

  9. MrW00Fpack 12/05/2010 at 6:26 PM #

Looks like are the predictions are legit so far.. WV Wolf you’d be in quite the predicament ehhh

  10. highstick 12/05/2010 at 6:29 PM #

If UnC plays Tennessee, they’ll get waxed also…

  11. StateFans 12/05/2010 at 6:39 PM #

    ^ They are playing Tennessee

I went to Notre Dame for Grad school and was hoping for ND, but when UCONN won, that chance evaporated. I was at school there when the wolfpack whipped the crap out of them in the Gator Bowl. I think ND would have been an easy win for us… for some reason WV scares me a little more.

Scar might rush for 500 yards on FSU. Lattimore will set a career high.

Heather Dinich has released a bunch of the matchups

    FSU vs SC
    GT vs Air Force
    UNC vs Tenn
    UM vs ND
    UMD vs ECU
    BC vs Nevada

This could be an ugly bowl season for the ACC. I do not envy BC having to play Nevada.

  16. Clarksa 12/05/2010 at 8:41 PM #

I guess BC is due to lose to a couple of different Wolfpacks/Wolf Packs?

  17. packof81 12/05/2010 at 8:43 PM #

I like the Twerps vs. Irate Pi-rates matchup. They oughta call that the toilet bowl.

  18. blpack 12/05/2010 at 9:40 PM #

Seems like old times in the ATL playing WV. It should be a good game. I look forward to the chance to pick up a 9th win.

  19. LRM 12/05/2010 at 10:13 PM #

Does anyone else think it’s completely ridiculous that the college football bowl season stretched into mid-January now? The championship game is Jan. 10.

  20. packalum44 12/05/2010 at 10:31 PM #

    ^ Yes.

I also think its a testament to the program’s rise that we were selected 3rd overall in terms of the bowl selection. This salvages whatever marketing we have with the slim pickings of the remaining recruits. Would have been a much easier sell with an ACCCG appearance.

And no I’m still not over the MD loss and won’t be for several years.

  21. Dogbreath 12/05/2010 at 10:37 PM #

I know Bill Stewart and he is a good man. That said, Tom O’brien better not get outcoached by WVU.

  22. leewolf 12/05/2010 at 10:50 PM #

Anyone else concerned about a potential lack of a big turnout for this game?

I’m pretty excited about this one, but I’m about the only one in my normal bowl traveling group of 10 or so that is even considering going. I have a few other friends going…but not many.

My concern is that I’m sure the selling points from Yow & Co. was a big turnout by State folks..and undoubtedly it will be bigger than UMD or Miami…but I would hate for us to have been oversold and not deliver.

  23. ncsu05mit10 12/05/2010 at 11:02 PM #

headline looks like it’s ripped right from The Wolfpacker

    http://ncstate.rivals.com/

may want to differentiate a bit

  24. wolfbuff 12/05/2010 at 11:06 PM #

Any chance we can get a stat comparison between State and WVU?

I think this is a good matchup. If we come to play with an imaginative gameplan, I think we can win. If we don’t do something different, our offense will struggle and we we’ll lose. I guess there will be plenty of prognosticating over the next 3+ weeks.
