UNC-CH Board of Trustees chair critical of N & O’s “opinion” (day 134)

Today the News and Observer published this letter from Robert Winston, the chairman of UNC-CH’s Board of Trustees.  The best part of the letter:

As Chancellor Holden Thorp has said, we don’t feel good about being in this situation, but we do feel good about how we’ve responded to it. We pledged from the start that we’d go where the facts took us, we’d find out how this happened and we’d figure out how to keep it from happening again.

The N&O’s opinion is just that, an opinion. We prefer to make our decisions based on facts.

Wow!  Remember, the UNC BOT is the body that, when given the chance to ask any scandal-related question of Thorp, Baddour, and Butch, had only one question, asked of Butch (paraphrased): “How is this affecting recruiting?”  I am not making that up.  That actually happened, as detailed in this entry.  So I guess “how is recruiting going?” is a vital, central question necessary for the BOT to reach its “decision based on facts.”

I don’t know the UNC-CH BOT’s politics well enough to be able to comment all that well on Winston.  For that sort of analysis, I rely on “BobLee,” a blogger who does.  Many of his recent columns have talked about Winston.  In particular I would suggest this one and this one.

Cracks in the armour???? Weakness in the shroud of secrecy and mystique of the “Carolina Way”???

  2. burnbarn 11/26/2010 at 11:17 AM #

This really is interesting.. first the chaiman of the faculty senate and now the chair of the BOT. Wonder when they will release the requested documents? This is why no one knows the ‘facts’. If the ‘facts’ bear the truth why don’t they release them to prove that position?
    Situation gets more interesting daily.

Shall we count the number of dummies on that Board who shall respond? Let’s rank them by lack of IQ and common sense…Winston, you’re audience may be stupid, but WE AREN’T!

Carolinx really sucks. And I mean that more than their usual suckage.

I hope the NCAA hammers them like no tomorrow.

The entire tarhole organization reminds me of a prisoner on death row, in total denial, waiting on a pardon. The execution can’t come soon enough.

What a disgrace and embarrassment – to the entire UNC System!! BOTBob seems more like a board monkey than a board monkey!

  8. highstick 11/26/2010 at 12:08 PM #

I’d prefer to see the type of execution as in Braveheart!! Rip their guts out!

At first I was just going to respond with “the truth will set them free.” And then I became curious about the origin of that saying, most attributing to the Biblical book of John.

Through research I ran across a page that is a collection of quotes on the concept of “truth.” In reading each quote, the next seemed more applicable than the prior although the first one is perfectly on point. Check these out and perhaps share them with BOTBob:

God offers to every mind its choice between truth and repose. Take which you please – you can never have both. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you mad. ~Aldous Huxley

It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself. ~Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia

I never dreamed of being Shakespeare or Goethe, and I never expected to hold the great mirror of truth up before the world; I dreamed only of being a little pocket mirror, the sort that a woman can carry in her purse; one that reflects small blemishes, and some great beauties, when held close enough to the heart. ~Peter Altenberg

The greatest enemy of any one of our truths may be the rest of our truths. ~William James

Truth is after all a moving target
    Hairs to split,

    How can anybody be enlightened?
Truth is after all so poorly lit.

Does anyone remember a similar letter written to the N&O during the Jimmy V scandal? I have a vague memory of someone from the NCSU administration writing something comparable.

  11. packplantpath 11/26/2010 at 1:26 PM #

GA, you left off some of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite writers.

“Nine times out of ten, in the arts as in life, there is actually no truth to be discovered; there is only error to be exposed. ”

“The truth, indeed, is something that mankind, for some mysterious reason, instinctively dislikes. Every man who tries to tell it is unpopular, and even when, by the sheer strength of his case, he prevails, he is put down as a scoundrel.”

    or my favorite:

“It is hard to believe that a man is telling the truth when you know that you would lie if you were in his place. ”

    H. L. Mencken

Excuse my ignorance… but is Winston’s Grill owned by Bob Winston?

  13. burnbarn 11/26/2010 at 1:56 PM #

not sure if it his or his diddy’s… his diddy started it. k

  14. wufpup76 11/26/2010 at 2:21 PM #

I would say that the Holes are very aware that in the court of public opinion ‘perception’ is the only thing that matters.

We can only hope that the NCAA is the ‘truth’ here, and that it matters.

To seem, rather than to be…

  16. Master 11/26/2010 at 2:40 PM #

GAWolf – Winston’s Grill is owned by BOTBob’s brother Charles Winston. IMHO Charles is a great guy – Bob, not so much. Given the opportunity to hang with either at the beach for a week, Bob gets left home every time.

  17. WolftownVA81 11/26/2010 at 2:53 PM #

I can only hope the N&O gets tired of the high and mighty attitude of those in power at UNC-CHeat and finally starts exposing the truth of what’s going on. Keep it up Bob, maybe you’ll poke at the sleeping tiger one too many times (if it’s in fact still breathing).

  18. Master 11/26/2010 at 2:56 PM #

Bob and the N&O probably drafted that letter together to make it look like they were both doing their job. They are not.

  19. highstick 11/26/2010 at 3:08 PM #

That sounded like something that Kennel would have written for Fowler…

  20. GAWolf 11/26/2010 at 3:10 PM #

Thanks, Master and burnbarn. I guess that means I can still eat there.

Hot of the tweetdeck: BobLee: BOTBob Winston takes a wild swing at N&O …. when in doubt “BLAME THE MEDIA”! uh oh…

  22. ADVENTUROO 11/26/2010 at 3:41 PM #

    Alas and alack,

I was celebrating my 45th wedding anniversary in Charleston and MISSED the Editorial that resulted in BOTBob’s letter. Here is the link, in case you missed it….it is really PRICELESS. I think that they just dusted off one of the many that they wrote in 1990 and changed the wording…..

The previous posters are correct in that BOTBob is the brother of Charles Winston, Jr., the co-owner of Winstons Grille.

Chales Winston, Sr. was Thad Eure’s partner in the Angus Barn, Darryls( sold for a very tidy sum to General Mills and THEY ran it into the ground….but they hired Charles and Thad to tell them WHAT they were doing wrong) and maybe the 42nd Street Oyster Bar.

I believe, if my sources are correct that Charles, Sr. was a very infulential and connected UNC Alumnus. BOTBob was involved in the hospitality industry (Hampton Inns) prior to Winston Hotels.

He then formed Winston Hotels which was a REIT. It was a high flyer in the late 90’s, selling for around $14 per share….it was bought out for $14 in 2007.

If you want to know MORE about BOTBob, then go to WinstonHospitality.com

NOTE, he was also the Chairperson of the RDU International Airport…..you know the one that built the NEW Terminal C and then tore it down and did all the “improvements” to the parking decks….yes that RDU.

NOW, I fully understand WHY UNC is in this mess.

BUT, you gotta give to BOTBob, he has made the sheckles and will probably be giving poor ole’ EX Gov, Mike, I’m a Convicted Felon, Easley a LOAN to pay his bills…..since Mike and his buddies have been “involved” with BOTBob on many occassions….

    Andventaroo:

Most importantly, congratulations on what in these days is a rare feet of marriage bliss. I hope you celebrate 45 more.

Secondly, you made a statement in the post above that may very well clear up a TON of things lately that have left me scratching my head. Some of those puzzling things make a little more sense now.

  24. graywolf 11/26/2010 at 6:39 PM #

The higher one sticks their nose in the air the less air there is to breath and eventually you will pass out for lack of oxygen……I wonder how high the collective noses of the UNC BOT is these days?

The longer it takes for answers from the NCAA….the worse this situation is for Carolina…

  25. highstick 11/26/2010 at 7:00 PM #

45 years? Holy crap! I didn’t think anyone on here was old enough to have surpassed my 38 1/2…You must be older than Willis Casey!

Where was Winston’s Grill? I’m familiar with Thad and his restaurants, but I’m drawing a blank on Winston’s…

Actually, the Angus Barn was one of my favorites back in the 60’s and 70’s…Don’t think I’ve been there but once or twice since I moved away though.
