Post-game scandals update (Day 131)

In this entry I cover a couple of scandal items and I share some random game observations that I think are cool.  This update is also in a nonlinear “Bytes” format familiar to those who enjoyed “Infopacks” back in the 90s.

First, check out this scoreboard picture.

Those of you who have experience going to State games in Chapel Hill know that a scoreboard picture with UNC-CH on the losing end that also shows 0:00 on the clock is a rare item.  This is because the ultra-classy UNC people leave a losing final score on their scoreboard for less than two seconds before they turn it off.  I actually did not go to the game this year.  I gave my tickets to my kids and their friends.  Before they left the house I explained UNC’s classy scoreboard policy and gave instructions to get the 0:00 picture.  So there you go, UNC-CH scoreboard operators — how do you like that picture!   This year the classy UNC-CH scoreboard guys quickly turned off our “29” but left up the UNC 25 — so the final score was left 25 to blank.  Feel free to share that picture with your friends.

**********

It occurs to me that State has worn four seperate uniform combinations for our last four UNC-CH games.  Red over white in 2007, white over red in 2008, red over red last year, and white over white this year.

*********

What is the deal with all the hideous body paint when we play over there?  Every time there is more and more bizarre body paint on display.  Here is an example from this year:

She looks like an extra in the Star Wars cantina scene with that goofy getup, and she was not even near the worst example.  This is from right after the safety, which is why I picked it.

**********

Regarding the game itself, the wild Spencer catch will be remembered for generations.  Let me go on record saying that I hope there was something illegal about the catch that should have disqualified the touchdown.  I don’t think there was, but that would make it even more delicious.

Here is a good youtube version of that play.
There are several funny things to watch aside from the actual content of the play, which is obviously fantastic.  For some reason, I love watching the ram through the whole thing.  How dumb are those animals, seriously?  All hell is breaking loose around him and he just stands there oblivious.  Also watch Davis slide headfirst into the hedge like a child who overshot a Slippyslide.

On this page you can look at a sequence of pictures taken by Gene Galin.  There are six pictures taken as the tip-catch is happening that are excellent and worth your time to check out.  The first of these shows our player (Jarvis Williams) who is obscured (but you can see his left arm and hand — notice the red armband) clearly inbounds (look for his feet) tipping the ball back with his left hand.  The rest of the series shows that the tip was back to a clearly inbounds Owen Spencer for a clean touchdown.

**********

UNC-CH season ticket holders had tickets for Saturday’s game that looked like this:

How hilarious is that!?  Obviously that’s our man Greg Little, last seen in pictures with Marvin at the Miami agent party.  Well, maybe not last seen at the agent party since this picture came out:

This is a player who has not played all year and is partially responsible for the scandals being “honored” on Senior Day with his picture on the ticket.  Obviously the tickets were printed up a long time ago, but I am still allowed to laugh.  The Marvin Twitter story broke in mid-July.  I wonder when the tickets went to press.  I have heard that Marvin himself was featured on UNC-CH’s Virginia Tech tickets.  If I can get my hands on one of those I will put it up in a future entry.

Regardless, these kids have been reported to be at many games this year actually signing autographs for CaroLoona Fans. (Thanks, BobLee) Talk about great role models! And, just so we have the embarrassing hypocrisy fully documented, please don’t forget that it was the Daily Tar Heel last week that ran an editorial that NC State should not have honored a GRADUATED Russell Wilson on Senior Day. Why honor a kid that embodies exactly what college athletics is all about when you can honor the likes of Greg Little & Marvin Austin?

**********

The scandals apparently are finally starting to resonate with recruits, as word is that UNC-CH has recently had two recruits decommit.  Nobody follows recruiting less than me, so the names mean nothing to me, but many people who keep track of these things predict several more UNC-CH decommits in December.  So, regarding UNC’s recruiting class, this looks to be happening:

I have a feeling that my updates will be more frequent in the coming weeks so stay tuned.

I noticed that chick with the white stripe across her face, too. At the time I remember asking my wife if she thought that chick even knew what a safety was, or if she was just one of those girls that is only a sports fan when she has something to trash talk about.

speaking of post game interpretations, credit where it is due to the folks at Tar Heel Fan blog for this hilarious take on it:

    But speaking of screen grabs……

Where’s the pic of the large boobed lass that I only caught a glimpse of at the time because I was too busy jumping around in my living room?

I heard from a coworker whose son works for the UNC football camera crew said they have evidence of whoever tipped the ball back in bounds to Spencer, stepped out of bounds before touching it which equals a illegal play.

I said I didn’t see it but it was such chaos in that corner I thought the ball sailed out of bounds til the ref threw his arms in the air.

who cares. NC State 4-0! Let’s beat those terps this weekend!

The screen grab Pack84 refers to would be a fine addition.

She was very … um, well endowed.

And if the Spencer catch should have been disallowed, then AWESOME.

About time something goes the way of red (or any other color) instead of blue.

The big bouncy celebration of TJ Graham’s Punt return can be seen on the replay at ESPN3 website. It starts at 2:53:56.

  7. PackerInRussia 11/24/2010 at 3:08 AM #

I know this probably wouldn’t do as a screen shot because it would look fairly normal without context, but I liked on the first series (I think) when UNC had a decent run on third down, but was several yards shy of the first down (hence bringing up fourth down). Immediately, the crowd was shown (possibly the student section) waving their pom-poms, or however you spell that, and cheering. Fan Football IQ at is finest.

From my forensic analysis, Davis was out of bounds along the end line, but never touched the ball. I think the angle is misleading, and I don’t think he got there. Williams may have touched the ball, and was in bounds. At least one and maybe two UNX players touched the ball first. And BTW, Williams was HAMMERED by #4 before the ball got there – back turned, not playing the ball, classic interference all the way, although it rarely gets called in that situation (which I disagree with no matter who I’m puling for). Spencer’s catch was clean.

    Conclusion, all good.

@Hinton thanks brilliant discussion… I kinda agree with the latest point as it was kinda what we saw after the Clemson game

    7. Lunatic NCSU fans a week from now if the Wolfpack lose to Maryland

I am effing done with TOB. He is a complete joke of a head coach. How do you now have this team ready to play a Maryland team which was clearly a fraud. And what was he and Dana Bible thinking on ????? Don’t get me started on Russell Wilson. I like Wilson and I appreciate all he has done, but I think we need to look to the future and give Mike Glennon some playing time in the bowl game. Here we had a chance to go to the FREAKING ACC TITLE GAME and TOB blew it. Thanks Tom! Of course it may have been easier if John Swofford had not instructed the referees to throw all those flags on us. It’s all UNC’s fault!

My fav photo from that link to ACC Football photos is probably the one with the ref handing the ball to Yates as he is down on his knees for the safety. Priceless.

The one thing I will say regarding the “rivalry” between the two of us…

There was a moment when Carolina had done something (FG maybe?) and the band was playing the fight song. They got to the part where they yell “Go To Hell (fill in the blank)”. Usually that blank is reserved for Duke. You would think when you’re playing State, the students would yell “Go To Hell State!”. But nope…on TV, you could clearly see the crowd inserting “Duke”.

Those people are so damn clueless it’s nauseating.

  12. ShavlikLeague 11/24/2010 at 8:33 AM #

@El Lobo Loco! What are you talking about? It appears you got hold of some bad peyote…

I was at the game, and I remember that play, PackerInRussia. I said to my wife, “They’re way short of the first down. What are they cheering about???” I was afraid there was a flag on the field that I couldn’t see.

  14. Mike 11/24/2010 at 9:47 AM #

Russia and bradley – I was wondering the same thing. What a bunch of morons. Even funnier was Elzy gets up pumping fists and then they do teh crowd shot and everyone is cheering. I am wondering what I missed because I knew they were still about 5 yards short. About that time, my sister calls me to ask what these idiots are cheering about – cheering because they have to punt?

  15. CaptainCraptacular 11/24/2010 at 10:01 AM #

I was watching the game with the wife and had the exact same conversation: “what are they cheering for, he’s way short of the first down”. I thought later after seeing so much red in the stands that perhaps it was our side that was making all the noise on that play. I don’t think I noticedthe crowd shot because I had turned to talk to the wife.

Nav: I think the ref is taking the ball from Yates in that picture, not handing it to him.

  16. gso packbacker 11/24/2010 at 10:06 AM #

I would absolutely laugh at any UNC fan who wanted to complain about that being a legal catch. I would enjoy the laugh though.

Also, did anyone else notice UNC’s Price (#4) working over Jarvis before the ball got there. I was trying to visualize the play in the corner being just the two of them and thinking (objectively?) whether that would warrant pass interference. I would say yes as he did not turn back to look at the ball. Thoughts?

BTW, even my 11 year old daughter watching at home looked at me with a WTF expression on her face when she heard UNC fans cheering on that play.

  17. ppack3 11/24/2010 at 10:08 AM #

    Caption to the post-safety pic:

    “Son, you just got served!”

  18. ppack3 11/24/2010 at 10:11 AM #

BTW, at the end of the game, they showed all of the upset, painted fans. I couldn’t help but to say, out loud, “Alright, cheaters, it’s time to get back to the dorms and wash all that crap off of your face!”

God, this game helps me hate UNC even more.

  19. bradleyb123 11/24/2010 at 10:42 AM #

I thought later after seeing so much red in the stands that perhaps it was our side that was making all the noise on that play. I don’t think I noticed the crowd shot because I had turned to talk to the wife.

I’m pretty certain I saw a ton of blue pom-poms waving, though. I thought I must have been wrong, and they had just gotten the first down or something.

I really believe UNX fans are kind of clueless when it comes to football. Seriously, I’m not just saying that as a jab at them. Generally speaking, they’re clueless. You can see it in their posts sometimes, too. I think they just don’t get the sport of football.

I was going back and forth with a Hole blogger before the FSU game. I wrote that I hoped we hit Ponder hard — early and often. I said I wanted him rattled all game long. Dude thought I was calling for an injury to Ponder and gave me a hard time for it. Hitting a QB and getting him rattled and nervous, that’s just part of the game as far as I’m concerned. That doesn’t mean I want to see him in an ambulance on the first offensive series!

  20. BamaPack 11/24/2010 at 11:09 AM #

Not much to add other than to say I enjoyed the writeup. Good…entertaining…stuff.

  21. GAWolf 11/24/2010 at 11:55 AM #

I, too, was at the game and I, TOO, laughed at the Carolina fans cheering the failed 3rd down attempt. Moral victory, I guess.

  22. GAWolf 11/24/2010 at 11:59 AM #

Come to think of it, a “moral” victory at Carolina is sort of oxymoronish.

  23. heavy 11/24/2010 at 12:16 PM #

I was ust wondering what caused the white streak across her face (ref pic above). Another ‘tutor’ to investigate perhaps?

  24. WolftownVA81 11/24/2010 at 12:40 PM #

Hinton, thanks for the link to the Tarheel Blog. That was hilarious and contained a good bit of truth.

  25. I-Like-Tacos 11/24/2010 at 12:46 PM #

I was also perplexed with UNXfan’s cheering on failed 3rd down attempts. I sat with the families of the State players on the third row all the way in the corner. Horrible seats. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad had not almost ALL the action been on the other side of the field ALL day, not to mention because of the construction, we couldn’t even see the video board.

Anyway on big plays like the Spencer catch, and most of the other TD’s, we had to go by fan reaction to see if the play went in favor for us or them. Needless to say that was also frustrating because most of all the students would still wave those pompoms and yell if a catch was made even if it was a failed play. So I was pretty much confused with most of the whole game.

Oh and on the body paint, I recognize one of my friends I went to high school with all covered in that baby blue in those pics sitting in the student section. He’s a real nice kid and all but just guess where he does NOT go to school.
