Lowe lands another recruit – Tyler Harris(updated 12:30 pm)

Updated 12:30 pm:

Story from ESPN.

North Carolina State coach Sidney Lowe has taken another major step toward upgrading the talent of the Wolfpack by adding SF Tyler Harris (Dix Hills, NY./St. Benedicts Prep) who joins 7-foot center Joseph Uchebo (Word of God Christian Academy (NC) and last year’s No. 1 recruit, McDonald’s All American C.J. Leslie.

“I developed a good relationship with the coaching staff, loved the campus and really liked how hard the players worked and I could see myself fitting in when I was on my visit,” said Harris, who picked the Wolfpack over St. John’s, Providence and Iowa.

“We really loved the wide open style of play and the fact that coach Lowe is a former NBA coach and was a very down to earth person was something that made NC State very attractive. NC State is ready to take the next step in the ACC and Tyler wanted to be apart of that.” said Tyler’s dad, Torrel Harris.

The younger brother of 2010 McDonald’s All American Tobias Harris’, who is a freshman at Tennessee, work ethic rubbed off on Tyler.

Zagsblog has video and article of this commitment:

New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski said Harris has vast potential, but needs to continue to grow stronger and improve his competitive edge.

“He’s a guy who grows before your very eyes,” he said. “He’s taller at the end of the fourth quarter than he was at the beginning of the first quarter. He has a super-active pituitary gland. He’s going to be 6-10, he might be 6-10 by the end of the season.

“He’s made enormous progress in the last year in terms of competing. He always had that Tayshaun Prince 3-pointer off the catch. He shoots deep 3′s. He could always cover the court well.

“He needs to get a lot stronger, the way Tobias needed to get a lot stronger. He hasn’t done the work on his body to this point that Tobias had done on his body from his sophomore year to his senior year, but he has enormous potential. Since the end of last season, he’s made exponential strides in terms of just competing and really playing hard.”

2011 recruit Tyler Harris is announcing his decision today. Jeff Goodman is predicting Harris will choose to run with the Pack. Last Friday, 2012 PG Tyler Lewis committed to NC State.

We will update this thread once Harris’ decision becomes official. He is said to be choosing between NC State, Iowa, and Providence. Coach Lowe has four open scholarships to hand out for the 2011/2012 season as it stands right now. Harris would join a 2011 recruiting class that already includes a center prospect in Joseph Uchebo.

Tobias Harris’ little brother is headed down south, also.

Tyler Harris, according to sources close to the situation, is expected to commit to N.C. State.

The 6-foot-8 senior forward, a New York native who is at St. Benedict’s (N.J.) this season, also considered Providence and Iowa.

Packpride has some quotes from Harris today:

“I made my decision following my last visit,” said Harris. “I came home and talked with my parents about it and now I’m ready to announce it.

“It was everything about the school. It had everything I was looking for from style of play, a nice campus, a good coaching staff, and great players. I believe I fit in well there with the players and coaches, and I have a great relationship with the coaches.”

Harris is tentatively scheduled to announce his decision at 12:30. Pack Pride will have more from Harris following his decision.

Agreed, the star system isn’t a tell all, the fact is, if we didn’t get recruit the depth would be getting thin, we still need bodies to give guys a rest and save fouls. I’d happily take a 3 star play over no player at all. Either way he is a 3 star power forward, we’ll be playing him mostly at small forward, which is a position that plays closer to his strengths than the PF position. Harris is a shooter and moves like a guard. Even though he is 6’8 and could still grow. Its exactly what we need, anyone can get stronger, its much harder learning how to shoot. This is a good pickup especially if he gains muscle and can bang in the low post better, then you have a dynamic scorer.

I think we need a mix of 5 star guys that leave early and 3 star guys that stay four years and get better each year. iirc Tracy was only a 4 star. I don’t think we are to the point of being able to reload a squad with 5 star recruits every other year. I don’t see Harris having to start until after Scott graduates, I have no problems with this signing. Having 5 man classes every year is not where we want to be. Now if we could only get these guys to not transfer before they become upperclassmen.

“was Harrow a 3 or 4 star when he committed?”

Harrow was an unraked 3star pg when he committed to State. This is a big pickup because it fills a big roll when CJL jumps to the pros. Harris comes from a great basketball family, and reportedly has a great work ethic.

Having already locked up a true Center, Harris will be a floating big man with more ball skills than alot of SF/PF. I’d love to see him work on his outside shooting/ball handling and really lock him up at a 6’8″ SF ( like a Singler).

Either way this is a big pick up and really jump starts our future recruiting.

Wow, both 2011 recruits (Uchebo and Harris) will each have played for three different high schools in the past three years. LeBron has nothing on these guys. I don’t know how good they will be, but it looks like we may be #1 for the all-vagabond team.

“Harrow and Brown were once not 5 star recruits. Harrow was a top 150ish player when he committed to us. So was Scott Wood who will be an impact player for 4 years at NC State.”

I agree with DU. SL and staff seem to have a good eye for kids that will blow up.
His recruiting has been solid the last couple of years.
Now he just needs to extend that success to the court.

    Holy shit!@!!! Rick and I agree. 🙂

I like this guy. He is excited to come here and has a tremendous upside. I also feel that Lowe has proven he has a better than average eye for up and coming talent. He was on Wall well before he was the #1 prospect as well as others.

    Welcome Mr. Harris!

Tyler H??? Hmmm, can he “will the ball to go in”””?

Harrow became a five star the summer before his senior year. Leslie was a five star way before his senior year.
Smith was a top 50 four star recruit. i have no issue with a four star recruit top 50 player, or even a four star recruit like Howell and Painter-both top 100. Brown was a four star his senior year and moved to a five star when at Hargrave (i think). Each of Harrow, Brown and Leslie were five star players when they came to State.
Harris is a three star recruit his senior year. the chances of him moving up to a four star recruit are minimal although he might.
it is written that Harris has potential and could grow. if i had a few dollars everytime that is written for a three star recruit, i would be one of the rich everyone wants to tax to pay for healthcare.
Harris might be another Scott Wood-and i hope he is.
i realize that Coach Lowe needs to win more games in the NCAA tournament before he can successfully recruit more five star players. if he doesn’t and continues to fill his classes with three star recruits he is in the NFL category. Not for Long as coach.
someone wrote that a school can’t man every positon with five star recruits. UNC and Duke do-for the most part. to compete with them, State needs likewise to do so.

I have to agree with sbas on this point. However, I agree with the other comments. Three star players can’t compete aganist Duke and Carolina. They are 6th, 7th, etc. guys. Everyone refers to Wood, but he will not start this year. He started.last year based on no other options. I have never understood the hysteria( sp) over Woods. His FSU game is what everyone is basing his year off of.

You have to remember that if a 4 star gets recruited by Duke or UNX they become a 5 star. And if a 5 star gets recruited by them, they become McD AllAmerican. There is the perception that those school only recruit the best of the best, and people adjust their rankings accordingly, because Roy and K can’t be wrong. Not saying this is always the case, but I have seen it happen too many times in the past, that during the off season, when Duke or Chapel Hell go after a guy, he gets a bump in the rankings.
