TMZ Sports reveals more contradictions in Carolina-cover-up

Just a few hours after UNC Athletics Director Dick Baddour publicly embarrassed himself by stating that the UNC investigation was winding down and he could see ‘light at the end of the tunnel’, the Carolina spin machine was in full effect yesterday in response to the shocking news that hit on Wednesday night.

1001_brian_bosworth_EX_Getty_01

Part of the spin machine’s mantra yesterday was to paint John Blake a poor man in need of money from when he was a coach at Oklahoma – more than a decade ago.  Evidently, ten years of making more than ~ $250,000 a year isn’t enough to help a man get out of his debts.  But, I am not going to tear apart everything from yesterday as this must read entry does all the work of breaking down a lot of the newest revelations.

What I am going to focus on is another of the Wichard-Blake-Carolina public positions that appears to be cracking under the current heat.  One of the blatant ‘contradictions’ pointed out in Charles Robinson’s piece on Wednesday night:

In an interview with Yahoo! Sports in August, Wichard denied any impropriety between himself and Blake. He also denied that Blake was ever previously employed by Pro Tect Management, despite a brochure obtained by Yahoo! Sports which listed Blake as the vice president of football operations for the agency and described his duties. But Wichard insisted that while the two have shared a 25-year friendship, there has been no financial relationship between the two.

“I don’t get involved with him bringing me players or anything like that,” Wichard said. “It has not happened. … Would John Blake say something positive to a kid about me if he was asked? I would think so. He has seen my work over the years, just like I would say something positive about him in terms of what he can do as a coach.”

(I expect there are direct quotes or comments from Blake in past articles denying that he has ever sent players to Wichard, but I don’t have the time to try to find them right now).

So…just to be clear…despite the odd ‘coincidence’ that 13 of the highest drafted players to have ever played for John Blake, UNC-CH’s Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Co-ordinator for the last four years, the public position remains that Blake has never steered players to Gary Wichard.

Not so fast my friend.

Today, TMZ Sports throws some a douse of reality on the Tar Heels’ newest attempt at defense as a source close to former Blake player Brian Bosworth says:

“the former University of Oklahoma football player was approached by John Blake back in the late 80s — while Bosworth was still in school.  We’re told … Blake, an OU football assistant at the time, told Bosworth, “I have a guy who’s going to change your life.”

That guy was agent Gary Wichard.

Setting up a meeting between an active college athlete and an agent could be a major NCAA violation … and it’s exactly what Blake is accused of doing at UNC. Last month, Blake resigned as the defensive line coach at UNC amid allegations that he was funneling Tar Heel players to Wichard.

As for Bosworth — he eventually hired Wichard as his agent when he entered the NFL.

Clearly, Blake and Wichard have a history that goes back more than 20 years … which is interesting since their relationship is now under the NCAA microscope.

Additionally, today BobLee penned another must-read home-run.

And if you followed the links in the TMZ article about the link between Brian Bosworth and Gary Wichard, you found out why Bosworth was angry enough to blow the whistle on Wichard:

Ex-NFL Star Sues Agent Over Bad $$$ Advice

    QUOTE:

“Former NFL bad boy Brian Bosworth is suing his former agent because he thinks the agent steered him toward a dirty accountant … on purpose.

According to a lawsuit filed in L.A. Superior Court, Bosworth claims his former agent, Gary Wichard, pushed The Boz towards Judd Rothman, an accountant, to manage his money.

Bosworth claims Rothman was eventually arrested and pled guilty to crimes related to misappropriating the funds of clients.

The Boz also alleges Wichard was aware of the scheme, and got a cut of the money Rothman made from Boz’s investments.

Bosworth is suing for damages in excess of $2,000,000.

A call to Wichard was not immediately returned.”

Have you lookd at the picture of Wiccard? He just looks sleezy with that fake hair/plugs! Like a 3rd rate pimp. Blake/Wiccard/The Boz…what a list of characters!

I really don’t see anything that BobLee brought to the conversation. To proclaim him the man on that nothing he penned, I would rather proclaim Mooneyham the man for his piece. I don’t get the fascination. If Bobbylee went to any other school, it is doubtful that any of you would care. It means more to me if a professional political journalist makes a comment than a political commentator.

    2 cent donation.

Just read today’s BobLee entry linked above. My goodness! That had me laughing out loud so hard my wife came in to see what I was carrying on about. Fantastic imagery!! Bravo!

Posted by ppack: Let us not forget that there will be other agancies getting involved. Namely the IRS. Blake has not paid back all these loans. If that is what they really are? I have my doubts as most others here. The IRS DOES have subpeona power and they will follow the cash. I am a CPA and I realized this last night. I cant beleive Blake would have reported that as income. But if he has never paid it back then it would be a gift from Wichard from which he(GW) may or may not have to gift taxes on it.

^ Yep. One cannot ignore this. It is this kind of leverage and subpeona power that was a part of our consistent call for an Independent Investigation…recognizing that there would be no teeth outside of the NCAA, where Marcus Wilson works, in any of their own internal investigations.

And…what happened to the money once Blake got it? Just *imagine* if some high school coaches — let’s just use the Prunty guy at Hargrave as a completely fabricate hypothetical example to make it easy for the reader to imagine — let’s just *imagine* that coach got some of that money from Blake? Where would this stop?

Posted by ppack: I’ve been saying this from the first day that Baddour trotted out his unconditional love for, errr, support for Butch. Baddour has given Butch and Roy free reign over their respective programs, and simply sits back and spins his “Carolina Way” party line. Everyone that I’ve talked to about Chanc. Thorpe says the same thing…”Nice guy, naive and still learning about sports, in general.” Thorpe knows nothing but what Baddour has told him and what he’s learned through Google. Baddour only knows what Butch has told him. You figure out the rest. They continue to support Butch because the started that way, for one thing, and now they are sort of stuck because Butch is holding them hostage. If Butch goes down, at this point, they go down too. Secondly, Butch keeps telling them that he can fix it, and blowing smoke up their tar holes. The same kind of smoke that Blake’s lawyer is blowing, right now. Maybe it’s a case of the spinners being spun?

^ Another Ditto. Here is what is going to happen — I think the NCAA doesn’t finish their investigation and come down with sanctions for MONTHS. Maybe even years. IF Butch finds a way to keep stringing them along…I think he ends up screwing them as hard as possible and ultimately jumps to the NFL as an assistant or to whatever program would buy his snake oil next.

The thing that a lot of people don’t seem to be understanding is that there will be nothing left to play for at Carolina. They will be bowl ineligible for years. They will have a major number of scholarships stripped. They won’t be able to admit a roster that is comprised 50% of academic exceptions. They won’t be able to ‘recruit’ the same players they’ve been recruiting because many of their recruiting ‘tactics’ are over. Butch won’t be able to get good assistant coaches to come.

NOTHING WILL BE LEFT. Why would Butch stay?

The greatest thing in the world – for people who don’t like Carolina – will be to watch Baghdad Bob Winston, Holden Thorp and Dick Baddour all defend Butch and talk about the future…and then have Butch leave them high and dry.

    BWHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA

NCSUPackfan – you are exactly right, they are in denial, much like your unfortunate female friend, which is only human. The problem is, professional administrators shouldn’t be acting like a loney girl who got dumped, they should act like professional administrators.

And like ppack3 says, once butch goes down or anything goes down, they will go down too. So – I draw two possible conclusions from their almost-certain career suicide up to this point 1) they are completely incompetent or 2) They are more involved and know much more than the public does at this point and are trying to “stop the bleeding.”

So, it is possible they are completely incompetent (we have had a well documented history of incompetence at AD and in the administration at NCSU), BUT – because any university administrator must have been trained on basic crisis management and been through at least one lower-level crisis in the past, it makes me think the cause is reason #2. They know something really rotten!

NCAA denied UNC’s appeal. Ed Hardin of the Greensboro News & Record has a great commentary calling for the Chief (Butch Davis) to be fired and if Davis is not fired and standing on the sidelines this Saturday vs ECU that Baddour should be fired also. This is the first major media article I have seen calling for Baddour to be fired also.

Finally the media in NC starting to get on the bandwagon. I got to agree with the Greensboro article. The UNX mess is embarrassing to the people of North Carolina as a whole. It is also a black eye to the UNC System which NCSU is a part of, so we do have a right to care.

  11. tuckerdorm1983 10/01/2010 at 7:31 PM #

Do you remember Leona Helmsley? The IRS got her because she was so high profile and they had to send a message to all the other taxpayers that they are tough.

Well the NCAA is in the same position as the IRS. They must make their stand at UNC. They must hand out stiff penalties. Those penalties must be proportionate to those handed out at USC.

It won’t be long until they NUKE the UNC Football program. Davis will resign.

    Davis Resignation Speech:

“My fellow tarheels I have become a distraction to this team and school and feel I can no longer effectively coach here at UNC. I am not being forced out and leave with the full and complete backing of the University. At this time I just wish to spend more time with my family and pursue other endeavors.

PackFaninLA-I have believed for some time that option 2 that you relate above is the accurate one; can’t fathom at this point that Winkin’,Blinkin’, and Nod could be this clueless…we will stay tuned!

Did I say, “deny, deny, and deny” and then “deny again”??? They are true to form and uninformed.

I had a non-alumni UNC fan chastised me today for being a “Duke fan”…

Baddour is playing to the idiots!! And will continue to do so! They know they have the BOG and political side of NC politics on their side~~

  14. Gowolves 10/01/2010 at 8:50 PM #

Actually State Fans that was me that posted the reference of the IRS. But no problem. As long as this trail is followed. I have seen income tax returns reconstructed based on bank stmts. The burden of proof is on the taxpayer to prove it is not income. Meaning was it a gift or loan. If it is loan then they want to see a pattern of paybacks and interest payments at a arms length rate.

  15. Gowolves 10/01/2010 at 9:08 PM #

    nseast8 Says:
October 1st, 2010 at 1:54 pm Gowolves, you just realized you were a CPA last night? Sorry, just watched Airplane! the other night so I had to.

Now that is funny! I guess I meant to say I didnt realize that end until I rally begin to hear about how these were “loans”. It did sound kind od stupid. Any way the fact is that money has chnaged hands. The IRS will want to know the nature of the payments. Was Blake perfoming services. Like steering players to Winchard(sp)? Was he paying players to come to UNC and in return he would recommend them a agent like….Winchard? Lets pretend that for a second that these were really loans. Why didnt Blake say something during his interview that these are potential problems. At least they would be on record saying they new about it. The fact that it was kept quite makes it seem all that much worse. Perception is reality.

  16. highstick 10/01/2010 at 10:09 PM #

We got a lot of “us beancounter CPA’s on here”, don’t we? Give us a shot at them~~~

  17. ppack3 10/01/2010 at 10:17 PM #

WRAL is now reporting that Wichard and his attorney will meet with the NCAA and the NC SOS investigators. They are also reporting that Hawkins has finally spoken with the NCAA.

Wichard’s attorney is also stating that he will supply records that prove that any payments to Blake preceded his employment in Chapel Hill and that the credit card in question was closed in 2006. He goes on to say that the money that was given to Blake was just a matter of one friend helping another and that no agree ment was ever made between them regarding the steering of players, by Blake, to Pro Tect Management.

    This is one confident weasel.

  18. ppack3 10/01/2010 at 10:24 PM #

Edit- Balmer spoke with Elaine Marshall’s office for about two hours, not Hawkins with the NCAA. I apologize.

  19. tuckerdorm1983 10/01/2010 at 11:18 PM #

they are getting ready over at UNC “to have a cap popped in they ass by the NCAA”

  20. Scooter 10/01/2010 at 11:31 PM #

The good news about all this mess (aside from the obvious) is that it keeps the media pressure off of our boys being 4-0 headed up against Virginia Tech. With all the press going over to the landfill, our guys haven’t had cameras and mics in their faces all week and can hopefully focus on practice.

  21. tuckerdorm1983 10/02/2010 at 7:40 AM #

maybe we can get Peter Golenbock to write a book about BD.
Title “Unsportsman like conduct” or “Program out of control”

  22. ppack3 10/02/2010 at 7:55 AM #

The book should be titled, “The Carolina Way.” That way, they would be ashamed to ever utter the phrase again. I’m proud of myself.

StateFans – In response to your comment above, “And…what happened to the money once Blake got it? Just *imagine* if some high school coaches — let’s just use the Prunty guy at Hargrave as a completely fabricate hypothetical example to make it easy for the reader to imagine — let’s just *imagine* that coach got some of that money from Blake? Where would this stop?”

We’ve been hearing for some time that money from UNC boosters was being used to pay tuition for UNC football recruits prepping at Hargrave. From what we understand, Prunty facilitated this activity and that he was getting a cut. We also understood that the UNC boosters were getting the tuition money from Blake. It is no longer a stretch of the imagination to believe Blake was getting that money from Wichard, and that Blake was handing it out to those UNC boosters. That’s plain old money-laundering, something that should attract the interest of the Feds.

What I would really like to know is the amount of each of the six wire transfers from Wichard to Blake over the past three years. Is it possible that one or more of those amounts match up with the tuition costs at Hargrave? Keep in mind the tuition for Hargrave is not an insignificant fee….$15,400 per semester, and $30,800 annually.

Oh, by the way, we also understand Prunty had the same deal with a few other programs, and was also involved in ensuring the continued eligibility of the recruits involved.

I’ve been saying for quite a while that Prunty left Hargrave for Texas Tech a little too abruptly. I feel certain this guy knows a lot of information about UNC and other programs that the NCAA would love to know.

If things keep going the way they are I think a comical thing may happen. The local sportswriters are going to see that they are passing up on possible Pulitzer prize winning material-with book and movie rights to boot and you are going to see them tripping over themselves trying to get on top of this story before someone in the national media does. Sooner or later somebody is going to find evidence that Swofford tried to cover this up or at least negotiate a deal. It just keeps getting better.
