NC State’s Freshman Class

“NC State’s incoming freshman class had a weighted high school grade point average of 4.23 and an average SAT score of 1,746.  Nearly 75% of the 4,550 students were in the top 20% of their high school class, and the group has students from 97 North Carolina counties, 42 states and 23 countries.”  – NC State Alumni Magazine, Autum 2010.

SFN Question: The SAT with which I grew up was based on a 1,600 point scale.  Can the good folks in our community educate everyone with some details and context of the changes in the scoring system and when these scoring changes were implemented?  Thanks so much!

I understand completely. I totally agree that the land grant / technical universities should focus on the core programs they were founded to operate. I think that many of them felt that, as the US shifted from a manufacturing and agriculturally based economy to one more heavily weighted towards the service sector, they had to expand their business programs to guarantee their relevance in the future. The paper industry in the US has been in a state of steady decline since I graduated with my pulp and paper degree. (At the time I entered State PPT majors had the highest starting salaries of any degree program in the university) Fortunately I did the ChE double major and was able to shift to a refining/petrochem related job a few years back.

I also know that one of the problems here in Texas is that the number of slots available at the two “Tier 1 Research Institutions” (UT and A&M) hasn’t kept pace with the population growth in the state. I would imagine the same thing is true in North Carolina. I know State’s enrollment has gone up some since I graduated in ’84 but I doubt it has kept pace with the growth in the population. When a potential business major can’t get in at UNC-CH, State may well be a lot more appealing than ECU or UNCC. Ultimately college admissions are a zero sum game for any given campus and universities have to decide which masters they want to serve.
