Wolfpack D Slays The Golden Knights 28-21

It almost feels odd to say, but the NC State defense carried the entire team in Orlando last night, and brought the underdog Wolfpack home with a 28-21 victory over the University of Central Florida.  Despite the fact that UCF is a non-BCS team, the victory certainly belongs in the quality-win column, given that it was on the road and against a team that’s considered a favorite to win their division in Conference USA.

A three-point road dog, State dominated the first three quarters of play and appeared to be on cruise control for an easy win until Central Florida sat starting QB Rob Calabrese due to his ineffectiveness and brought in freshman Jeff Godfrey.  The former Florida prep 6-A player of the year ignited the Golden Knights moribund offense and quickly made it a game that came down to the last UCF series over the last two minutes of the game.  He had the Knights marching towards a tie until NC State’s Brandon Bishop separated UCF’s Quincy McDuffie from the football – and any hope – on the Pack 11 yard line in the waning moments.  Three kneel-down formations later, a relieved and happy Wolfpack squad brought home the win and their first 2-0 start since the 2002 season.

Linebacker Audi Cole led the team with 12 tackles, including 3.5 for loss (19 yards), one sack (10 yards) and an interception. The former Golden Gloves boxer was literally all over the field and had a highlight-reel interception that shut down a Central Florida trickeration pass play.

C.J. Wilson, a member of the oft-maligned secondary, had a 43-yard interception return for the touchdown that gave the Wolfpack its winning margin.

No one seemed happier after the win than Wolfpack head coach Tom O’Brien. “That was a heck of a win for our team,” he said. “A couple of big, big turnovers were the difference in the game, but it’s always that way. Turnovers and penalties decide games.”  For a change, it was the Wolfpack forcing the mistakes instead of making them, and ultimately that — as well as the revived defense — made the difference.

The offensive attack of the Wolfpack had a decidedly mixed night. N.C. State had only 239 yards total offense, including just 79 in the second half, but at times in first half, they were able to move the ball at will against a stout UCF defense.  Tailback Dean Haynes scored from four yards after an interception and later, freshman Mustafa Greene had a 21-yard scoring run to cap a quick three-play drive after NC State recovered a UCF fumble. Russell Wilson also hit Darrell Davis with a 26-yard scoring pass to finish off an 83-yard scoring drive, giving the Pack a 21-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, State’s was far more ineffective as UCF’s outstanding defensive line players found ways to penetrate the NC State backfield and repeatedly disrupted plays.  The Wolfpack’s play-calling never seemed to be able effectively counter the UCF rush, and all too often in the second thirty minutes the Pack would be forced to punt after one or two series of downs.

Special teams continues to be an Achilles Heels for State – they gave up a 93-yard touchdown run to UCF’s Latavius Murray, they had several penalties, and the thrilling end of the game scenario was initially set up by a shanked punt by Wolfpack kicker Jeff Ruiz — his flubbed kicked with a little more than two minutes left in the game with the Pack hanging on to a 28-21 lead gave the ball back to a rejuvenated and effective UCF offense on the Wolfpack 49 yard line.

All in all, the win was ugly, and like all ugly wins, it was a decidedly mixed bag for the Wolfpack.  Fortunately, however, there are no pictures in the win-loss column, where State looks good: 2-0.  They still have much to work on — Russell Wilson needs to return to form, the O-line needs to find consistency, the special teams needs to become effective and the defense needs to work on outside containment when they are facing spread formations.  Those improvements will need to come fast, because the Pack returns to the friendly confines of Carter-Finley after a very short break, where they will face the Bearcats of Cincinnati in a nationally televised contest this coming Thursday evening.

Granted, the game should have been more in control with a 5 TO advantage, but I honestly don’t know what it is going to take to make some fans happy. We have b**** & moaned for 3 years about the D. The D wins us a game and we are still b**** & moaning.

    “…we should win with 5 TOs…”

It’s not like we were just handed the ball on those TOs. The only real flukey TO was the punt hitting the UCF player. The rest of the TOs were our defensive players making plays. I am not penciling us in as the ACC champs, but I am happy the guys won a game on the road vs. a resilient opponent. We have lost many games like this over the past couple of years.

“…but Sam Jones was our best alternative at RT when Overgaard went down…

I thought the same thing. I thought he should be our backup tackle, ahead of Crisp, going into the season, this game, and during the game.’

I think Sam Jones is our back up RT and Crisp is our back up LT. So one doesn’t have anything to do with the other.

“Did anyone else hear TOB’s pregame interview with Gary Hahn?? It was horrible !! You would have thought he was being interviewed by the enemy.. Woody Durham!!! When asked if Sweezy, Kuhn and Vermiglio wpould play he replied, “you will have to wait until game time and see”” It’s the WOLFPACK SPORTS NETWORK and it is 10 minutes before gametime….give us a break Tom !!!!!”

I think you should know that those interviews are done earlier in the day and taped and are re-played for the broadcast.

So what? He still can’t let the WOLFPACK NATION know their status even on game day ??

“I think Sam Jones is our back up RT and Crisp is our back up LT. So one doesn’t have anything to do with the other.”

Actually, one does. As Mike Tyson says, “Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth”. When Overgaard went down, the replacements were not up to task. We got “hit in the mouth”. Time to adjust and put your best linemen out there.

Vermiglio is listed as our starting right tackle. So then why was he temporarily moved to left tackle? According to you, the have nothing to do with one another.

You don’t pigeon hole any lineman to only one side of the line. That is ridiculous. To state that left tackle “doesn’t have anything to do with ” the right tackle is a ridiculous statement.

You want your best 5 out there, period.

“It’s the WOLFPACK SPORTS NETWORK and it is 10 minutes before gametime….give us a break Tom !!!!!”

TOB is consistent. That’s all you can ask. If he were not, then questions would arise when he deviated from the norm.

In some situations, knowing a lineup 10 minutes before kickoff does provide useful information to an opponent.

What would it have done to our sideline if we had learned that, 10 minutes before kickoff, Godfrey would be UCF’s starting QB?

Geesh, “with fans like you…” If you’re too ignorant to understand, then ask questions. Don’t let your default position be to criticize your own team and your own coaches.

pfff, of course you can blame the game on the 5 UCF turnovers…we caused them. This was a solid win. Our pass rushing looks to be very good. RW is a bit rusty but i have no doubt that he will get it together (not like he played a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, just not as dominant by the standard he set for himself). I feel that our D played great, allowing 14 points (as one touchdown was special teams). I could not have imagined a better result, it was far from perfect, but this was a projected loss. We marched down to orlando and showed many people that our D is not a pushover any more.
And with the poor showing of the ACC yesterday, the sky is the limit. If JMU can beat VT, cant we??

    @Lunatic Fringe
exactly, i feel the same way

We have b**** & moaned for 3 years about the D. The D wins us a game and we are still b**** & moaning.

I am not complaining, not at all.

I do think we need to improve to have the kind of season we all want, and to point out some of the weaknesses, well, that’s just what I am used to as a sportsman. Hell, I shot my low nine holes of the summer today, but instead of congratulating myself, I instead thought about the two loose strokes that sent me three strokes over par. If I can bottle the good stuff and spit out the bad, I *can* break par on my home course. It’s a goal. It can happen…but only if I am honest with myself.

Same thing for Wolfpack football…we did 90% of everything well, but there is still some work to do. Doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy the win or that no one else should. Still, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

This team has a chance to win at least 8 if they improve. Their margin of error is thin, however, and if they play badly, 5-7 can happen too.

  9. GAWolf 09/12/2010 at 6:05 PM #

I’m not complaining a bit. This is a HUGE win at a critical time. With that said…I sure hope our staff is at least contemplating the sae things we’re “bitching about” or else we’re going to get thumped Thursday.

Alpha, My comments were not really directed toward your original article. I thought it was a good piece and I appreciate you putting it together after the game.

I also share the same “guarded optimism” for our team this year.

  11. Alpha Wolf 09/12/2010 at 6:25 PM #

^ Cool, LF. ‘Preciate your saying that.

We *could* be 3-0 by the weekend, hopefully we will continue to improve and get halfway to bowl eligibility before the end of the week!

  12. hball57 09/12/2010 at 7:22 PM #

“Vermiglio is listed as our starting right tackle. So then why was he temporarily moved to left tackle? According to you, the have nothing to do with one another.”

Because we tried Jones and Gregory and were not happy with some part of their performance. as Vermiglio has played RT before, we then tried him there.

Now to your contention that “you don’t pigeonhole lineman to one side or the other” this staff, who has had great success with offensive lineman in the past, believes it is much more difficult for players to go to one side of the line to the other, than to go from Tackle to Guard on the same side. Also the RT and LT positions have different responsibilities, and you want your quicker lineman on the QB’s blind side.

  13. tractor57 09/12/2010 at 7:22 PM #

LF I agree the article was well written.
All in all a much better start than any TOB coached team.

Add on top of it all it’s the only game on TV (at least I think it is) it’s crucial to win and look “good” doing it. Doesn’t mean we have to blow them out, rather we can’t crap the bed again like we did in the second half.

Thursday night is more than a game for getting closer to a bowl. It’s also a recruiting tool and we need to take advantage of it.

  15. mak4dpak 09/12/2010 at 7:30 PM #

Russell was certainly very rusty, and threw some risky passes that were almost turnovers, hope he looks better Thursday night, as for Godfrey playing QB, I will admit he looked good, but then again he was playing against a defensive unit that spent most of the time on the field in the second half, and were clearly tired. If our offense had showed up, I don’t think Godfrey would have looked so good. So hopefully we won’t see a repeat of that anymore, and Russell and offense will do a better job. After such a good first half running the ball, we seemed to abandon it in the second. That didn’t help matters. Go Pack!

I have no idea why your post got sent for moderation. BTW, I deleted what looked like two identical posts.

    hball57,

Actually, I misspoke (or wrote, in this case), Vermiglio is listed as our starting left tackle, not right tackle. He was temporarily moved from LT to RT after Overgaard’s injury. But this is immaterial to the point of the discussion.

“Also the RT and LT positions have different responsibilities…”

No, not really. Each side has the same responsibility when they are playside, and each has the same responsibility when they are backside. The only changes come with adjustments due to personnel matchups and/or the variability of blitzes and stunts, but those are dependent upon the opponent’s tendencies and play calling, they are not dependent to a specific side.

“…and you want your quicker lineman on the QB’s blind side.”

No, not really. Generally speaking, you want your best tackle with the best feet on the QB’s blind side, but that depends on the offensive system and the talents/limitations of the specific QB.

“this staff, who has had great success with offensive lineman in the past, believes it is much more difficult for players to go to one side of the line to the other, than to go from Tackle to Guard on the same side.”

Actually, that is not what the NC State staff believes, but regardless, are you seriously trying to say that a transition from RG to RT, and visa versa, is EASIER than transitioning from LT to RT, and from LG to RG?

If you are, just say so and I’ll end the discussion now. There is no point in continuing.

“Add on top of it all it’s the only game on TV (at least I think it is) it’s crucial to win and look “good” doing it.”

Carter Finley can rock… they’ve been numerous night games on National TV in which the CF atmosphere was impressive, and translated that way to the TV…

Bring the noise, bring your body, fill the seats and back your team… Let’s impress the country and those recruits out there.

  18. blpack 09/12/2010 at 8:49 PM #

This team shows promise, but there is much to work on. RW will have to be sharper on Thursday. I am thinking he will be and lead us to big things.

  19. tvp1 09/12/2010 at 8:59 PM #

I remember seeing Jones get beat really badly on a play, and then did not see him in the game again.

Allen was the guy who looked to me to really be struggling.

  20. tvp1 09/12/2010 at 9:01 PM #

tjfoose1: I think hball57 is correct, actually. Our normal substitution pattern on the OL last year was to substitute one guy at RG and RT, and a different backup subbed in at LG and LT. And I’m pretty sure I saw Horton or TOB say that they liked to have guys play one side or another.

  21. tvp1 09/12/2010 at 9:06 PM #

As for the game as a whole, I am taking the glass half full approach. We have 2 years worth of data that tells us that Russell Wilson is a very good QB. He’s very unlikely to play that poorly again. I see no reason to worry about him yet.

The defensive effort is really encouraging. 3 of the 5 were just really good defensive plays, and the last pick was the result of pressure. At no point last year did we see guys breaking up passes, picking off passes, and making hard hits in the back 7.

And Haynes/Greene are much better than I thought they’d be.

  22. turfpack 09/12/2010 at 9:24 PM #

Guys- alot of good points…..but ITS THE SECOND GAME….AGAINST ONE OF THE BETTER DEFENSES WE WE’LL SEE….VERY FAST AND ATHLETIC.
I Feel more comfortable about this team and it’s ability, than any other since TOB’s been there. They made some good adjustments a the half, which confused us at times…..plus that was a pretty good QB they brought in….alot more mature than I would have guessed.
    I’LL TAKE 2-0 ANYDAY!ANYWAY YOU GET IT.

  23. tjfoose1 09/12/2010 at 9:35 PM #

Ok, perhaps I am wrong here, maybe. Perhaps there was something I missed about this particular staff or one specific OL coach, but I doubt it.

I’ve never seen that, as a rule. Yeah, sure, sometimes you’ll move a tackle to a guard or a guard to a tackle, once, but not interchangeably, back and forth. Most teams, if not every team, will have more experienced, older, players, or a very talented players, who play both positions. But that is not the general rule.

As a rule, it is easier to simply switch sides, NOT positions. Players are generally listed as guards OR tackles.

NC State’s personnel changes to cover Overgaard’s injury Saturday night bear that out… We tried different tackles at right tackle, even switching Vermiglio from left tackle to right tackle.

We finally settled on Gregory, who is listed as a guard, but has played every position on the line over his 5 year career at NC State. He’s not the most talented, but he has plenty of experience playing the various OL positions. He’s NC State’s “utility infielder” of the OL.

It may not seem so, but his play there actually supports my point, that is, we went with a less talented player who knew the position vs playing a more talented player who has only played guard.

Also, be careful not to read things into what coaches say… coaches would “like” to have a lot of things… The realities of college football, and the health and limitations of the talents and skill sets of their players rarely ever match the coaches preferences.

The coaches would also like to have the OL 3 deep at every position, with 4th and 5th year Rhodes scholar candidate starters at every position, backed up, 2 deep, by 2nd and 3rd year players.

Just because a coach say’s “he would like…” doesn’t mean reality will let him.

Don’t have to believe me, ask anyone you know who has ever played OL, even at the high school level.

But anyway, I’m done with this.

“AGAINST ONE OF THE BETTER DEFENSES WE WE’LL SEE….VERY FAST AND ATHLETIC.

True, sometimes people forget the other guys have scholarships, good athletes, and competent coaches too. The other guys are allowed to make good plays. The other guys are allowed to play well, to play hard, and have some success.

  25. VaWolf82 09/12/2010 at 10:05 PM #

I seriously doubt that UCF has one of the better defenses that State will face this year.
