Davis on 620AM: ‘How Should I Know?!’ [3:00P UPDATE]

UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF POST

In the work lag due to the impending doom falling from the sky, I got a chance to hear the Butch Davis interview with 620AM’s Sports Talk.  Well… I say interview, but that implies one individual is asking questions and someone else is answering.  From what I heard, the totality of Davis’ responses was “I dunno”.  I swear, how an individual with the intelligence of Davis makes it to a place that reveres itself as UNC does is beyond me.  Then again, this is the same school that decided to make another famous moron their poster-child.

Unbelievable.  But I digress…

So Butch Davis was asked about the recent exposure of credit card records from Austin and Balmer and if he thought that the head coach of the team should be aware of who is giving money to his players for trips.

‘How can I know what credit cards the kids use?  I don’t know what credit cards you use.  You don’t know what credit cards I use.  Plus, I don’t even know if the claims are true or not.’ (Paraphrase)

Butch…. *sigh*… let me see if I can’t explain this to you.  You are the coach of a “major” D-1A football program at a highly public university.  Part of that job description is that you need to have a general idea of where your players are and what they are up to.  From the records released, Austin took time off to head off to Cali-Cali from March 7th to March 14th of last year.  This means that for 7 days, Davis didn’t know where one of this most highly acclaimed recruits was, if he was training, if he was doing anything illegal, or if he was studying.

“But NCStatePride, they were on Spring Break.”  You have got to be kidding me, token Carolina fan!  A head coach of a D-1A program shouldn’t be concerned about where his star defensive players are on Spring Break?  I tell you what;  We’ll give Butch a pass on that question and go on to his second gaff.  Davis was asked about whether the reputation of Blake or his history/personal connections were known before he accepted a position at UNC.

”Carolina does an extensive background check of every coach.  They do it for all of our employees and coaches.  They did it for me, they did it for everyone.’ (Paraphrase)

Butch you are so #%$^ing dumb.  The question was “shouldn’t you have been aware of some of the previous histories and relationships of your assistance coaches”, specifically talking about Blake’s connections to Wichard that recently broke.  So your response to “shouldn’t you have been aware” is basically that you were aware of Blake’s history?

Ladies and gentlemen, you heard it from the horse’s mouth: Davis knew exactly what was going on and he just… I suppose… didn’t care.  As the first caller stated “Davis sounds like a walking dead man and I think he knows it.”

Most infuriating of Butch Davis’ comments is that he shouldn’t “have” to know what’s going on.  He feels students have private lives and… hey… he can’t be responsible for what they do in their private lives.  News flash, Butch: the subject of ‘their private lives’ is your livelihood!  If they are misbehaving, legally or ethically, it will turn on you in a flash.  Maybe he became arrogant because of the UNC PR shield that you are given as a Carolina “official”.  Either way, Butch Davis’ excuse that ‘he doesn’t know what’s going on’ and ‘this is completely not his responsibility’ is getting petty and tiresome.

The fact that Butch Davis is not being immediately dismissed is beyond me.

UPDATE

3:00PM 9/30/2010

Recently, Carolina AD Baddour released a statement regarding the financial records proving a connection between Blake and Wichard:

“We became aware of some of the information through the NCAA investigation when John Blake was interviewed on Aug. 31. But financial transactions in and of themselves don’t establish a violation, and at that time we did not have enough information to dismiss him with cause.

“Nevertheless, we weren’t comfortable with what we learned. That, combined with the distraction that Coach Blake was becoming to the football program, led us to the conclusion that it was not in our best interest for him to continue to bepart of our program. He offered to resign, and we agreed to terms on Sept. 5.”

So it appears Baddour disagrees with Butch Davis.  According to Davis, “I am not my brother’s keeper.”  Davis basically states in his interview earlier today that the university does everything they can do to flush out the rift-raft.  What I read out of Baddour’s release is that they knew there were large sums of money being transferred between Blake and Wichard… they just didn’t think that proved anything.  What a load.  From one Carolina official you get a response of “we’ve done all we can do and if we had any way of knowing what people do in their private lives, we might take action.”  What you have from Baddour is “we know what goes on in their private lives, we just didn’t think it meant anything bad was going on.”

As some of the commenters have stated, simply because a rule isn’t broken doesn’t mean the spirit of the rule isn’t being broken.  If Baddour saw large sums of money being passed between an agent and an assistant head coach, and if integrity was really a top priority, he would have quickly dismissed the assistant head coach and issued a public statement that they are attempting to flush out the corruption in their program as quickly as possible.  Instead, Baddour chose the “Carolina Way” which is to stonewall the public, protect their ‘homers’ as much as possible, and pray the problem goes away.

Don’t know if this has been said before, but I know from working with the football team at State, that there is a checkout process before breaks, so I imagine it’d work with Spring Break too. You gotta know when the guys aren’t just “going home” for break….come on…I would take a menial salary to only monitor that for the team so this doesn’t happen! geez

Story picking up steam, on web sites of ACC Sports Jounrnal, Charlotte Observer, and ESPN. Wonder were newspaper will put story in print editions tomorrow. I know if it was NCSU, it would be on the front page.

Hopefully editors and local media will demand an independent investigation. Appears the State was aware of these items of evidence, so it is absurb an independent investigation has not been demanded. National media mentioning death penalty, local journalist not even talking, amazing the bias!

I think the fact that Baddour, Davis, and Thorpe have not disclosed this information to the public, media, and UNC Board reeks of cover up and all three should be dismissed! Where are you Erskine? Where is the ACC, I mean AC-Chapelhill!

This is heading downhill fast. Once they have enough to satisfy the lawyers that Paul Davis has violated the terms and conditions of his contract he will be terminated. Dicky B is trying to figure out how he survives this. If Butch did not know anything about all of this mess then he should be fired immediately or checked into a mental institute.

  4. DTF 09/30/2010 at 1:29 PM #

@primacyone I agree 100%. They haven’t won a bowl game since 2001 yet Davis’s recruiting classes according to Scout.com have been ranked as the number 14, 30, 6 and 31 recruiting classes in the nation. Also, they are currently sitting on the number 11 class although I’m sure that will change soon enough.

  5. packgirl1 09/30/2010 at 1:32 PM #

I find it amusing that they are appealing the sanctions against Burney & Williams. If they could get their head our of their “carolina blue” clouds they would be adding sanctions to players on top of the ones mandated by NCAA. I totally agree with releasing Austin he is the main reason they are in this mess. Austin doesn’t realize that this debacle decreases his draft value in the future. The NFL doesn’t want players that are trouble in College “i.e. Marcus Vick”.

i missed something, who is paul davis?

NCStatePride: Butch’s first name is Paul. Why anyone would elect to go by “Paul” over “Butch” is beyond me. Maybe he dated a bunch of butchy chicks so the name stuck or something…

  7. NCStatePride 09/30/2010 at 1:35 PM #

If I’m a position coach and I’m smart, I get together each day with a couple of my assistants and go down the line of my roster calling people during breaks. I have a sheet that states what people claimed to be doing and have my assistants witness it. You’re getting paid a pretty decent salary to just make one phone call over breaks and check-in on your players. The payoff is that even if the players lied to you, you have legal deniability of their actions.

  8. packbackr04 09/30/2010 at 1:37 PM #

    oh, thats butchs name.. haha

  9. Hungwolf 09/30/2010 at 1:44 PM #

That’s Chief Paul Davis thank you!

  10. ppack3 09/30/2010 at 1:49 PM #

Look, trying to figure out a solution about how to find out where Butchie’s players are/where, is assuming that the line of crap that they are spoon feeding you is true! They very well may have KNOWN where these kids were! THAT’S the implication of today’s news! If Butchie knew, he was in on it. If he didn’t know, either Blake or Austin (or both, among other players) lied to him. I have a hard time believing this because he ‘aint pissed off at anyone! HE KNEW!

One more thing. UNC could let him go right now, and not have to pay him a cent. Find the links to his contract. JP Giglio quoted it in his blog today. The verbiage in there is very clear. They would be well within their rights, right now, to terminate Butch Davis. I say, keep him. The longer you keep him, the bigger jackasses you seem to be, in the eyes of the public, the media and most importantly, the NCAA. Oh, and I hope they lie to the SOS, too. Oh, and I hope that Blake reported those payments from Wichard to the IRS, because they read the AP wires too.

It’s all over for Paul now…Tudor is the litmus test for ACC coaches’ job status.

    p.s. I am the Walrus

  12. LKNpackfan 09/30/2010 at 2:00 PM #

If anyone thinks blue-blooded Tudor would go out of a limb like that, without knowing something to back it up, I’ve got some ocean front property in Lumberton to sell you.

  13. TAEdisonHokie 09/30/2010 at 2:02 PM #

Remember, folks, we’ve yet to hear (publicly) about the UNC football recruiting violations. The money wired from Wichard to Blake is part of that story and I can almost guarantee that we’ll hear more about that fairly soon. I can imagine that there are a number of UNC boosters who are very nervous about who knows what, and who’s spilling their guts about it.

  14. primacyone 09/30/2010 at 2:02 PM #

^Yep. Dicky Baddour should have kept his mouth shut in his 100% support of Butchy.

With Tudor making thay statment, should be a lot of reporters around the state jumping that bandwagon. Should be, but will see. . . .

  15. NCStatePride 09/30/2010 at 2:04 PM #

I mean… it only makes sense, right? UNC’s sole purpose in not firing anyone was because they believed they could appear composed and have favor in the courts of public opinion by not acting rash and firing Davis (or Baddour… or Thorpe). With the breaking of this latest news, it no longer “looks good” for them not to fire Davis, even if it means a coaching change mid-season.

We also must acknowledge that Baddour is not a complete idiot and the possibility that Davis’ job status was decided in August is very possible. Baddour could have “fired” Davis already and the delay in an announcement is because they are finding a replacement.

This is conjecture and little more than a whisper in the wind, but just because we are use to dealing with Fowler doesn’t mean we should dismiss a decent AD. Baddour may simply be waiting to officially fire Davis because he is conducting a coaching search to assist in a smooth transition.

Even when things are going well for a coach at a particular school, there are always feelers being sent out by “large universities” to potential head coaches just to see who is in the market. I wouldn’t be shocked if these feelers were tapped when news of these investigations broke so Baddour new know he could and could not interview for the HC position at UNC. I don’t expect to see Davis dismissed without there being some other head coach en queue.

  16. choppack1 09/30/2010 at 2:06 PM #

How would you feel if you were a clean assistant or player on this staff?

I mean, there’s a certain “you sleep w/ dogs you wake with fleas” aspect to this – but I think it would be easy to kind of assume what you were seeing is kind of minor league stuff. In addition, if you were from the NFL – would you even know it was wrong?

And here’s what I’ve gotten from this – a lot of this is done using the “longstanding friendship” connection of former players. Talk about breaking the spirit of the rules…I see this aspect of the “scandal” is the somewhat similar vein of how our assistant allegedly had a professor change a player’s grade to Incomplete from an F/D. It doesn’t really break the rule – you’ve found a way around it – but it certainly breaks the spirit of the rule.

  17. ppack3 09/30/2010 at 2:16 PM #

“I wouldn’t be shocked if these feelers were tapped when news of these investigations broke so Baddour new know he could and could not interview for the HC position at UNC. I don’t expect to see Davis dismissed without there being some other head coach en queue.”

I’ll bet Baddour’s list of potential Butchie replacements got a whole lot shorter, as of today.

  18. coach13 09/30/2010 at 2:41 PM #

My question…does the NCAA interview that Tennessee player who says he was offered money? To me that could be a huge…HUGE story to find out recruits are getting money. Start interviewing the 2011 recruits who have committed. That would be awesome! Interview some recruits that chose other schools from last year and see how much they were offered?

This football program is done. Too many people know too much. They’ll find someone who knows and will speak.

The fact UNC allowed Blake to resign and paid him $75 K is damning. That looks purely like hush money now.

And the tutor? You think UNC wants her to talk? Hell no. They are all…ALL in the same bed. She is tight lipped and THAT is just what UNC wants. If there is any honor in that honor court system, they will suspend those involved in the academic fraud until the tutor comes foward with who, how what and why.

This program is fixing to go down hard. Will they let players transfer out I wonder?

  19. Homeboy 09/30/2010 at 2:49 PM #

    I say
Pass the Butchie on the left hand side
Pass the Butchie on the left hand side
It a gonna burn, give me music make me jump and prance
It a go done, give me the music make me rock in the dance

  20. packbackr04 09/30/2010 at 2:54 PM #

i would be surprised if the tutor who was also Butchs nanny is the only tutor invloved. just because she is the only one Greg Little ratted out, doesnt mean other players did not have diferent tutors who were doing the same thing. this is systemic over there

  21. ppack3 09/30/2010 at 3:24 PM #

The interesting thing that has now come to light, is the fact that Baddour’s Press Release today says that they knew of money changing hands, with regards to Wichard and Blake, ON AUGUST 31ST! He says that it played a part in his departure from the University, along with the distraction B.S. So, they knew about this a month ago. Dickie said that they didn’t know all of the details. Who cares? You knew about this? Still 100% behind Butchie? You’re damn straight he is, and has been, even though he knew that Butch’s right-hand man was a runner!

    Incredible.

  22. primacyone 09/30/2010 at 3:26 PM #

“We became aware of some of the information through the NCAA investigation when John Blake was interviewed on Aug. 31. . . .”

“. . . . .led us to the conclusion that it was not in our best interest for him to continue to bepart of our program. He offered to resign, and we agreed to terms on Sept. 5.” Dick Baddour, Sept. 30, 2010

“There is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this University.” Butch Davis, Sept. 3 2010

Let’s see if I remember this correctly. When did John Blake offically resign. Oh yea, it was Sunday Sept. 5, just one day after their BIG GAME in Atlanta. Wonder why they waited until the 5th????????

  23. Old MacDonald 09/30/2010 at 3:34 PM #

I am not near a computer at the moment, but didn’t Butch say this morning that he had just learned (this morning) about the financial connection between Blake and Wichard. Now DB says they knew this in August? Which is it? They can’t even keep the lies straight.

  24. ppack3 09/30/2010 at 3:34 PM #

With this information, somebody tell me why they would give Blake $75,000 when he “resigned.” And don’t hand me the crap Baddour handed the UNC Faculty and the Press, saying, “It was the right thing to do.” The right thing to do? Unreal.

  25. ppack3 09/30/2010 at 3:37 PM #

^ Old MacD, Butchie said that he was unaware of the article until this AM. He also said that the credit card thing was ‘news to him.’ He never said that he didn’t know about any of this. Baddour and Butchie have chosen their words very carefully. that’s the power of spin.
