Mooneyham: Outrage missing in UNC scandal, Davis should be fired

FINALLY! Some common sense and opinion from some guy named Scott Mooneyham.

Welcome to the big time, Mr. Mooneyham. Please be prepared for private and public lynchings by the members of the secret society we have named, ‘The Flagship’. It is kind of like going up against ‘The Firm’. The last guy who spoke out against Carolina got this. Still no word on Joe Mavretic’s recent whereabouts, either.

😉

Mooneyham’s column is quick and concise, but at the same time complete. It MUST be read in its entirety.

Some select passages are included below:

The basic facts leave little doubt that what’s occurred is the worst college sports scandal to hit a UNC system school campus since a basketball point-shaving scandal of the early 1960s.

The response from some the school’s supporters seems to be that this kind of thing happens everywhere.

Really? I’m not aware of any athletic department tutors at other schools accused of wrongdoing who coincidentally were employed by the head football coach.

and

But in Chapel Hill, there’s no outrage to be seen.

Athletic Director Dick Baddour. He says the school’s internal review aims to “protect the integrity of the university.”

Does he mean the integrity that’s already disappeared on his watch, or any remaining integrity that slips away with each passing day that Butch Davis remains head football coach?

The school’s chancellor, Holden Thorpe, should fire Davis and Baddour. If he won’t, he should be fired.

There’s no reason to wait. None of the details, playing out day-by-day in the newspapers and on the Internet, are going to mitigate the fact that Davis and Baddour allowed the worst sports scandal in five decades to occur on their watch.

It’s not just the Carolina Way; it’s the only way.

UNC Scandal

^If you read the Doyle article you’ll notice he pointed that out as a popular complaint of the Tar Heels.

    Stillastatefan,

I love the lack of intelligence and the hypocrisy by that commenter and other Tar heel fans. It is ‘Ruling Class Elitism’ at its best.

    UNC-CH’s Chancellor is not biased.
UNC-CH’s Athletics Director is not biased.
    Erskine Bowles is not biased.
The ACC’s Commissioner – UNC grad and former UNC AD – is not biased
The UNC-CH Board of Trustees are not biased.
The Chairwoman of UNC System Board of Governors is not biased.
The UNC-CH grads on the Board of Governors is not biased.
All of the politicians who are UNC grads are not biased.
The Sec of State who is seeking election in this state is not biased.
All the UNC journalists in the media is not biased.

^ All of these people have the amazing ability to be above bias.

But, Mooneyham is biased because he went to NC State!

    God I love it.

  3. Old MacDonald 09/28/2010 at 12:28 PM #

It does not get any funnier than UNC people complaining about media bias.

  4. Pack Mentality 09/28/2010 at 12:29 PM #

    Scooter said,
“A side note but for whatever reason, this whole thing makes me think of Judas Priests’ cover of The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown).”

The other day I just heard the guitar intro from Screaming for Vengeance on a minivan commercial. I almost got sick.

Also, Carolina sucks and are a bunch of cheaters and pansies.

  5. newt 09/28/2010 at 12:37 PM #

    A) He is absolutely right but B) we really want UNC to continue to be wrong. I have no fear of Paul Davis.

  6. bradleyb123 09/28/2010 at 12:45 PM #

I’ve never heard Butch referred to as Paul. I had to look it up to see what his real name is. Funny.

And yes, Carolina fans complaining about media bias is the most perfect illustration of irony that I’ve ever seen. Well, that and them complaining about bad calls going against them.

Athletic Director Dick Baddour. He says the school’s internal review aims to “protect the integrity of the university.”

The USS Integrity has up and sailed from Chapel Hill. L’il Dickie and Holden the third, you need to RESTORE the integrity of the university, not protect it. And the only way you’re going to do that is to be up front and honest about what has happened, take your punishment like men, endure the embarrassment, and fix it. Anything else, and you will be seen as just trying to protect not only the integrity of the university, but your own hides.

Just a reminder that Mooneyham, a state policy journalist and editor of the NC Insider, is not the first of his colleagues to speak out since Mavretic.

    Time to roll out Dean.

  10. Hungwolf 09/28/2010 at 1:07 PM #

It time that we and the UNC System start to call NCSU the flagship school of the UNC System. We are the State’s largest University with the most students and graduates. We have far more outreach programs across the state than anyone. We are the number one rated school in the state by employers. Our sports programs are clean and not under NCAA investigation. NCSU “The Flagship” University of North Carolina.

As far as, UNC-CHeat, it is time to keep repeating the term “cover up”. Looking at the facts, I see an AD and Coach that clearly have been in the know. I am still amazed that an independent review has not been ordered by anyone. I wonder how much the tutor is cooperating with the NCAA or if they have been in contact. She has a lawyer for some good reason.

“IF that’s the case he should be fired for losing.”
    priceless

  12. Wufpacker 09/28/2010 at 1:25 PM #

“Our sports programs are clean and not under NCAA investigation.”

Not saying I disagree with your post overall, but that sentence was funny.

  13. Wufpacker 09/28/2010 at 1:27 PM #

Oh, and Joe Mavretic is probably taking a dirt nap in Dean Smith’s back yard. There’s another hole dug but they haven’t been able to get close enough to the tutor…yet.

  14. packof81 09/28/2010 at 1:53 PM #

Hungwolf is right. NC State has the most students, graduates, outreach and is held in the highest regard by employers. NC State was created to correct the Chapel Hill mistake and we have.

  15. GoldenChain 09/28/2010 at 2:35 PM #

“I wonder how many of those kids, when they were recruited, didn’t see ANYTHING that seemed non-Kosher compared to other programs recruiting them.”
Because some of the SEC programs were ofering them stuff too….?!

  16. Master 09/28/2010 at 3:08 PM #

You know, Baddour and Thorpe and trying to present the image of being calm, in control and all knowing. This is in hopes that the NCAA and others will have confidence that the school does not have “Institutional Control” issues.

What I see is two Catholic Bishops in their robes and pointy hats saying “there are no pedophiles in the clergy.”

Baddour, Thorpe and the entire Tar Heel bandwagon can be defined by one word – Pious.

In another 11 days, the football season will be at its halfway point, and I don’t see any significant punishment handed down to UNC, and I don’t see major signs of that happening. Davis is still the UNC coach and apparently has full backing of UNC administrators. UNC fans, at least many of them, don’t see it as a big deal. It’ll go away.

    Nothing ever changes.

  18. StateFans 09/28/2010 at 4:02 PM #

^ Dude…you may not see punishment from the NCAA for years. It took them 4 years to investigate USC. Letters of Inquiry have an expiration & renewal date of 6 months each.

    Exert:
“The goings-on within the UNC-Chapel Hill football program have tainted the entire university and 16-campus university system. To believe otherwise is to put you head in the sand…”

Hey VaWolf82, what an asshole this guy is huh? Utter nonsense I tell ya.

  20. wufpup76 09/28/2010 at 4:50 PM #

Erskine Bowles vehemently disagrees with all of these disingenuous assertions.

Believe in Erskine. Trust in Erskine.

I mean, there’s no possible way that any of these people are just scrambling to COVER THEIR A**ES.

  21. StateFans 09/28/2010 at 5:18 PM #

    wufpup,

It depends on what the definition of is is.

  22. TomPack 09/28/2010 at 5:26 PM #

Honestly, as fast as the UNX ship is sinking I have expect at halftime of a future football game the Tar Hole band to play “Nearer My God To Thee” as the team continues to go down beneath the waves.

  23. JeremyH 09/28/2010 at 6:36 PM #

just what do you guys think you are doing? UNC-CH wants this to be forgotten fast and all you do is bring it up again. unbelievable

  24. VaWolf82 09/28/2010 at 8:25 PM #

The goings-on within the UNC-Chapel Hill football program have tainted the entire university and 16-campus university system. To believe otherwise is to put you head in the sand…”

Hey VaWolf82, what an asshole this guy is huh?

Nope, he’s just stretching an unimportant point too far in an otherwise excellent article. To imagine that anything Butch Davis and his bunch of cheats do has any effect on any legitimate student (even from UNC) is one of the silliest things to come out in the various discussions of the UNC Scandal….and with the silliness being generated, that is saying something.

As I said the first time this silliness came up, decades of graduates from your school and your degree have estabilished a reputation amongst potential employeers. To think that misdeeds among people who (for the most part) cannot even be seriously described as “students”, is simply paranoia (or grandstanding) to the nth degree.

  25. GoldenChain 09/28/2010 at 8:57 PM #

Good news for the holes, I just saw on TV that the Tampex applicator is is now 40% smaller!
…maybe they can help stop the bleeding….
