Brian Taylor will commit to Wolfpack

The current position of NC State’s football recruiting remains a hot topic amongst Wolfpackers as evidenced by some of the questions that Jeff took from callers during SFN’s appearance on Taylor Zarzour’s radio program this Tuesday.

Jeff chose to promote patience  through February before judging the class, citing (1) a reduced number of scholarships available this year (2) needs at some positions that will not garner high rankings (special teams); (3) the evolving scandal at UNC that could benefit our class in the future.

This morning, we get some good news to help compensate for losing Vad Lee to Georgia Tech (and former NC State assistant, Andy McCollum) on Thursday.  Harnett Central’s Brian Taylor has told the N&O that he will commit to NC State over Clemson, UNC and ECU – exactly the types of teams we need to be competing for recruits.  This is not surprising news as it was known that Taylor grew up an NC State fan.

Harnett Central’s Brian Taylor says he’ll commit to N.C. State

APEX — Harnett Central senior quarterback Brian Taylor announced on Friday night that he intends to verbally accept an offer from N.C. State on Saturday to play football for the Wolfpack next season.

After the Trojans defeated Apex 51-31 on Friday, Taylor said he received an offer from the Pack on Thursday and intends to call coach Tom O’Brien on Saturday morning. He was unable to speak with anyone from the staff on Friday.

Taylor, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback, led the Trojans to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A state championship game last season. Along the way, he passed for 2,024 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 1,023 yards.

Known for unflappable confidence, Taylor possess a strong right arm and quick feet. His coaches say he constantly leads by example.

Taylor would chose the Wolfpack over other offers from Clemson, North Carolina and East Carolina.

Taylor’s presence in the NC State program will create a very balanced lineage of depth at the quarterback position for years to come. Coach O’Brien’s philosophy is to sign one quarterback per recruiting class; so, it now appears the Wolfpack’s depth chart at the quarterback position is relatively solid for the next six years with Mike Glennon, followed by Tyler Brosius, followed by Brian Taylor.

In other tangential recruiting and roster conversation, the N&O also provided us a great look at Tom O’Brien and NC State’s success with transfers through the years in this piece that takes a more intimate look at offensive lineman, Mikel Overgaard.   Next year, we’ll be able to add EJ Carter to this list of success stories.

I thought about Brien Taylor the other day. Then did a little backtracking and realized that was 1990-1991 time frame — TWENTY YEARS AGO!!! OMG!!!

There are folks who read SFN who weren’t even born then!

For anyone who needs a little education:

Other football news, Ol’ Ball Coach says NCAA will rule on Saunders before their opener. Should be interesting what comes out of that ruling.

Brien Taylor was ONLY 20 years ago. That was 3 years after our last ACC basketball championship and over a decade after our last ACC football title.

And here we are in 2010, just hoping for a winning season in anything.
