My View: The New AD Must Be Experienced and Successful

Now that change has come to the leadership of NC State’s athletics programs, it’s fair to take an objective look at the state of the program as it really is, and what qualities the new Athletic Director should have in order for NC State to be more successful than is the current state of affairs.  Here’s my take on the kind of man that NC State should hire, based upon the current lay of the land in West Raleigh.

There are times one can turn the reins of an enterprise over to an unproven or little-tested leader, and there are others where a leader with a strong track record of success are needed.  The former is suitable when the organization is running optimally, and little change is needed.  The inexperienced manager can learn on the job, being careful all the while to not make drastic changes until he is sure that the change is called for.  His subordinates are proven and competent, and the programs he inherits are proven winners.  The latter leader — the guy with the wealth of experience — is needed in a situation where things are not right, when the organization is performing well below its capability, and where strong guidance from the top is needed to create a management environment that sets the tone for future success.  In other words, this is the guy you want to come in when things are broken because he knows how things are supposed to work.

As we posted yesterday,  only four different programs — Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Softball & Wrestling — have won an ACC Championship during Lee Fowler’s ten-year tenure in Raleigh.  Note that the two revenue sports of football and men’s basketball did not – and that those two sports drive the perception of NC State not only in North Carolina or in the region, they do so nationally.  If a rising tide lifts all boats, that tide must come from the two marquee programs, and if it does, the positive effect will be seen across the entire landscape of Wolfpack athletics.

That said, State needs to focus its search on an Athletic Director who is that guy who will come in and set things straight, create an environment of defined goals and accountability, one who is not afraid to make the difficult decision as to whether a change is needed when things are not working as planned, and not only that, someone who knows what it takes to have a successful football program and a men’s hoops team that’s a regular entrant into the NCAA tournament.

In short, State should hire someone who meets this basic set of requirements:

  • Athletic Director experience at a BCS/Power Conference school
  • A successful record in managing football and basketball (conference championship-level teams, and one that’s an NCAA Tournament regular in basketball)
  • A successful and dynamic fundraiser
  • One who is successful public relations, works well with the press, and Internet management
  • Demonstrated innovative and successful brand management,  where value and media income are maximized
  • Successful management of NCAA rules and regulations (no major probations or lingering questions)
  • Has managerial courage – will make the tough call when it needs making
  • Successful management of the academic requirements required by the University

This should not be a wish list, it should be the minimum set of standards. Chancellor Woodson has made the correct first step by involving a national search firm to shake the trees and find the right set of candidates.  Now he must see it through and actually fill Lee Fowler’s chair with a proven AD. Getting someone who has that skill-set will not be cheap, and this is not the time for NC State to be foolishly bargain hunt to save a few thousand dollars.  As an institution, it has shown the courage to make change, and now it needs to finish the task by showing the courage to pay the market rate someone with proven success demands.

This decision will have long-lasting effects, and getting it right this time is one of the most important things that NC State has done in athletics in quite a long time, probably since it replaced Jim Valvano.  Let’s hope it gets it right this time and does a much better job than it has since the dark days of the early 1990’s.

So, how much is enough or too much? Which guy has been the most successful from the power conferences that we can give a bunch of money to….
We will need to double our budget in order to attract anyone that meets Alpha’s description. This is going to be very costly…. I think everyone that wanted this done needs to donate at least $30k per year so we can make this happen. Some of you may need a second job.

What I really want is someone who has seen, from the inside, how a well run athletic department works. Things like shoe/uniform contracts, tv/media, SID, merchandising, have all been areas that seem like we just threw things together, or worse.

As far as why someone would come here? Aren’t we one of the top schools in the country in terms of booster clubs? We have been abysmal from a marketing standpoint. If you’re the kind of person who wants to make a mark, this is a phenomenal place to go. Its not like you could go to a Michigan, Notre Dame, or Florida and change much, but here…

  3. Wolfpack_1995 05/05/2010 at 11:50 AM #

NO Previous connections please. Sorry Charlie and Bobby but WE need to cut ties with the past and establish a new guard.

No more Todd Turner/Les Robison scenarios.

Bring in a damn leader period.

  4. Classof89 05/05/2010 at 1:05 PM #

Wolfpack_1995, you’re contradicting yourself when you say, “NO Previous connections please. Sorry Charlie and Bobby but WE need to cut ties with the past and establish a new guard.

No more Todd Turner/Les Robison scenarios.”

Ummm…Todd Turner was the outsider candidate, brought in after a “nationwide search”, “the best candidate regardless of personal connections”, blah, blah, blah. And he fell flat on his face. Les was the insider, kicked upstairs as a reward for giving up his coaching position. He didn’t do too well either.

My point is, there is no magic formula–you show me who’s on the search committee, and I’ll tell you whether they will bring in someone decent before they’ve held a single meeting.

  5. FM-72 05/05/2010 at 2:19 PM #

What about this darkhorse candidate from the University of Cincinnati?

    MIKE WADDELL

Senior Associate Director of Athletics/External Relations
Mike Waddell joined the UC athletics family as senior associate director of athletics in March, 2006. His duties include oversight of the revenue generating areas of the department: marketing/fan development, ticketing/customer service, sports communications, information technology, the CAT TRACKS Wheels of Support program, and UC’s profitable athletics licensing and merchandising efforts. He also directs UC’s fundraising efforts with UC’s Men’s Track & Field/Cross-Country / Men’s Swimming & Diving teams and serves as a member of UC’s Campus Communications Cabinet.

Waddell has sport oversight over the UC men’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s swimming/diving teams. He also serves as the department’s liaison with adidas, IMG College, ESPN and FS Ohio and is a member of the BIG EAST Golf Committee.

The North Carolina native came to UC from The University of Akron, where he served as the associate athletics director for external relations. UA’s sports marketing revenues increased more than five-fold during Waddell’s tenure via the creation of the TEAM AKRON corporate patron program.

A 1991 graduate of Guilford College (NC) where he was a two-time football letterman, Waddell is an active member of NACDA, and BCA, and serves on the American Cancer Society Board in Cincinnati and is a founding member of the Cincinnati Sports Professionals Network (CSPN). Waddell also is a coach with the Glen Este Youth Basketball Association and donates time to work with the Aubrey Rose Foundation, benefitting seriously ill children in the Tri-State Area.

89 is right, along with person who noted that the process is key. Will people who have a “Charlie Brown” mentality be driving the train? If so, you’ll get another boring technocrat like Turner or a gladhandler like Fowler. Will people who have a stronger sense of vision drive the train (as is my very preliminary assessment of Woodson)? Then, the process will give you the best chance for success.

Of course, nothing in life is guaranteed. You can’t guarantee success. Even a shitty process doesn’t necessarily guarantee failure. But it’s all about giving yourself the best shot possible.

Frankly, if it was going to be Purcell, it would have happened on an interim basis in time for him to work the Final Four on our behalf.

  7. gso packbacker 05/05/2010 at 3:13 PM #

Given that Fowler received notice back in March, I don’t think they would have pulled the rug out from under him regardless if they felt Purcell was the one for the job. It seems that things were done to give Fowler his chance for a more graceful exit, or perhaps one that didn’t potentialy cost us 3 years of his salary. Curious what the primary driver was here ($ or appearances)?

On a humorous note, I think one of the criteria for the next AD should be that he has a three letter first name begins with “L”. Nothing like hitting the trifecta of AD’s with 3-letter “L” names. The third time is the charm they say. So somewhere out there sits a Lou, Len, Leo or Lon waiting for their chance at greatness. Bring ’em on!

  8. Zen Wolf 05/05/2010 at 4:02 PM #

    Bill Cowher for AD anyone??

Never mind we need to save that ace for head football coach in a year or two.

  9. BSIE80 05/05/2010 at 4:12 PM #

Waddell has no Head AD experience so he is out.
We want the best that money can buy!!!

  10. drgreenhouse 05/05/2010 at 5:55 PM #

I’m glad we hired have the research firm. Many previous posters have pointed out that the NC State job has alot of upside potential and I’m sure that we can give a good athletic director the appropriate compensation to come to Raleigh.

We also need to understand that UNC doesn’t control our athletic department destiny. Salaries for our athletic programs are supported by the donations made to the Wolfpack Club and money made through endorsement deals. Carolina has had great success in athletics because they have mastered the process of marketing their image and securing endorsements (think Nike)

One thing that SFN has been very consistent with is pointing out the mediocrity in all of our sports. Many of our sports don’t bring in revenue, but we should want them to be successful. The athletes that we recruit should become excellent students, in turn successful alumni of the university. As these athletes become successful in the workforce in future public and private institutions, they will only help give the university a positive image. Our non-revenue sports are an investment in our total athletic success in the future.

  11. 61Packer 05/05/2010 at 7:10 PM #

I really don’t care who they get, as long as this person will make one of his/her first priorities changing the Wolfpack men’s basketball uniforms from “NC State” on the front back to “State”.

  12. JaegerWolf 05/05/2010 at 7:59 PM #

I would like to see us go after someone that is currently serving in a high profile, very successful program. For example, an associate AD at somewhere like Ohio State, Texas or Southern Cal. I’m not sure that there are candidates at those specific schools, but you get my drift. I want them to come from somewhere that was THE big dog in their area. I want them to have the attitude that other schools around here will have to compete with US. I’m sick and tired of hearing people (a lot of whom claim to be State fans) claim we can’t expect to be as successful as this school or that school. I guarantee you Randy Woodson doesn’t buy into this “only so much we can achieve” attitude.

  13. Cardiff Giant 05/05/2010 at 9:14 PM #

“I respectfully disagree. It’s time for a professional manager with absolutely NO ties to the old guard.

From top to bottom NC State’s athletics management needs to be on notice. Those in lower level positions that have failed to perform need to go too. A new broom sweeps best, and an old broom often fails to clean the corners.”

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! POST OF THE WEEK!!!!! HOME RUN!!!!

Truer words never spoken. The Buddy Ro system is directly responsible for State’s second rate (if that) national status. We need a competent professional with specific expectations.

  14. Pacobee 05/05/2010 at 9:54 PM #

Love the posts…agree, no ties to the past. From the looks of the salary survey, we’re going to need to raise the price on soda’s by a buck to cover the difference needed for a reasonable salary.

  15. bradleyb123 05/05/2010 at 10:42 PM #

Consider the changes in the BOT and the Chancellor’s office. It’s a new day in those places. The Faculty Senate rightfully wants a proper balance of academics with athletics.

Alpha, I hope you’re right! I’ll be watching the AD hiring process closely, though.

  16. EverettBeez 05/05/2010 at 11:20 PM #

WIFF, I believe Willis Casey, the long time very successful swim coach, became AD in the late 60s.

  17. Sam92 05/06/2010 at 8:31 AM #

“The idea is that our problems go much higher than Fowler. Yes, he’s bad. But so are the people in charge of hiring (or in this case, replacing) him.”

This is exactly my concern – the problems go straight up to the board of trustees, and so, i have my doubts about our ability to get a real star AD.

and yes, i think there are problems for ncsu at the very top of the unc system — they want to keep us down below unx.

i think that’s unfortunate. i believe that north carolina is a big enough state to have two great public universities, but i doubt that the people at the top of the university system agree – and too many of them, and too many state legislators, went to UNX

  18. Sam92 05/06/2010 at 8:39 AM #

great info BSIE80 – the one place i gave lee fowler a break was that he had less money to work with than the competition.

your budget numbers: 39MM for ncsu, 61MM for unc

it is hard to compete when the bad guys have half again as much money as we do

  19. Cardiff Giant 05/06/2010 at 9:11 AM #

Willis Casey was a disaster. The effects were not seen for 20 years but he was a disaster. He started the NC State tradition of working on the cheap.

  20. wufpup76 05/06/2010 at 12:52 PM #

Culture change … IMO, that means someone sharp, dedicated and totally foreign to NC State as it is today.

    New blood, please.

And let us not forget, not all of the poison is gone just yet (academics and athletics).

Also, fair point about Willis Casey. It’s beyond time to start giving the folks what they pay for.

I disagree that the new man in charge has to come from a big, BCS shool. We do need experience, but it needs to be someone who has transformed a underacheiving program to a successfull one. One good example is the UAB AD. Just basing a AD’s qualifications on the size of the program and its success may be misleading if they were one of the lucky ones to inherit a strong program that didn’t need revamping.
