Dayton Daily News: Mays to leave NCSU for Wright State

This rumor started gaining momentum again last night and culminated this morning with a newspaper article from the Dayton Daily News. Here is a link from Pack Pride. It has been known for a while now (here’s an SFN article from April 21) that Mays was gone, but it wasn’t sure where exactly he would choose to go. Some said Kent State. He’ll end up at Wright State.

WSU lands guard from NC State

Julius Mays didn’t feel he fit into North Carolina State’s basketball style, and he wanted to be closer to his hometown of Marion, Ind.

In return, Wright State has landed a transfer that could give the Raiders stability when they lose three key guards after next season.

Mays, who spent two seasons at N.C. State, said Monday, May 17, that he plans to transfer to Wright State, where he will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after sitting out a required season because of transfer rules.

“I learned a lot at N.C. State, so I feel like I can come in and be a leader right away,” Mays said.

A 6-foot-3 guard, Mays averaged 4.7 points and 1.2 rebounds in 58 games over two seasons at N.C. State. One of Mays’ best attributes has been his free-throw shooting, as he made 78-of-91 college attempts (85.2 percent).

Best wishes, Julius. I enjoyed watching you play while you were here.

I’m glad to see no one is badmouthing him (yet). Sometimes when players transfer, people say what they really think, which I suspect is usually not what they thought until the transfer happened.

I believe he expected to see a lot of pine time on the horizon, and decided to transfer. I don’t blame him a bit.

When Carolina’s football team had several players leave, right after Butch had over-recruited, it seemed apparent (still does) that Butch was forcing them out, and “upgrading” his talent.

Any chance that Sidney is forcing Julius out, to make room for someone else? I’d like to think Sid wouldn’t do that to a kid, that he believes in honoring his commitment to them. But do we have reason to believe Sid might have told Julius that he could look forward to riding the bench if he stays, thereby “forcing” him out?

Just wondering if that how these things usually work.

The word was that Mays leaving was a surprise to the coaching staff – not a force out.

Mays was not forced out. He should do well at Wright State.

I don’t think they would force him out. Guard is still a thin position for us.

It doesn’t appear to be a forceout, since Lowe apparently isn’t using Mays’ freed up scholly this year. I hope Julius will be happy at Wright State.

    Good luck, JM!

I can see why Julius would want to be somewhere with more PT for him. Best of luck!

Best of luck Julius. I appreciate your attitude and the effort you gave. I always thought you were thrown in the fire a little too soon so maybe in the end, this move will be a great benefit to you as you continue to develope your skills. Hope this works out well for you.

Thanks for everything, Julius Mays. Hit a couple of game winners and had a great attitude.

I wish he was staying, but I wish him good luck at Wright State. I hope it is a good fit for him and that he can excel there. Good luck!
