The ACC’s Coaching Carousel in full orbit

I was going to spend a bunch of time leading my coaching carousel entry writing about Butler’s Brad Stevens until I ran across Rush The Court’s entry on Stevens that served to save me a lot of time. You can view it by clicking here.

Stevens’ profile on Tobacco Road has been elevated since the Wilmington Star publicly endorsed that NC State should immediately him as opposed to following the generally projected path of waiting to see how next year worked out for Sidney Lowe.

I learned yesterday that Phil Knight and Oregon may be throwing as much as $3 million a year to lure Stevens to the Ducks. So, I couldn’t help but have my radar blink wildly when Wake Forest surprisingly fired Dino Gaudio today supposedly out of the blue. For some solid commentary on the Gaudio situation you should click here to Jim Young’s new piece at ACCSJ.

Young’s comments near the end of the article on Ron Wellman are worth sharing below. And, if you don’t click through to but one of our hotlinks in this entry then it should be to this classic of the man who doesn’t make excuses.

Speaking of capital, sources indicate that Wellman has raised approximately $2 million from private donations in order to be able to buyout the final four years of Gaudio’s contract.

That Wellman already had that sort of funding in place is hardly surprising. He has a reputation as an AD who does not make a move unless the next move has already been planned out as well. Before Wellman broke the news to Gaudio the AD had likely already gotten a sense of which coaches would be interested in taking the Wake job.

Expect Wake Forest to at least make an overture to Butler coach Brad Stevens, if it hasn’t already done so. Former UNC-Wilmington coach Brad Brownell, who has since gone on to lead Wright State to four straight 20-win seasons, is another person who fits the Wake profile nicely.

Don’t expect to hear much news leaking out of the search. Wellman also has a well-deserved reputation for playing things close to the vest when it comes to personnel matters.

One name you see in RTC’s commentary is Clemson. I’ve got my eye specifically on Scott Drew related to Clemson and won’t shy from admitting that he would scare me to death down there. I don’t care if his recruiting practices skate some lines as many people in college basketball like to suggest. If the guy could recruit to a private Baptist school in friggin Waco, TX…he can recruit to Clemson, SC…or another private Baptist school in Winston-Salem, NC. (And…we don’t mind taking another bow from putting Drew on your personal radar LAST YEAR.

Speaking of Clemson, I heard from a buddy that Oliver Purnell called Terry Don Phillips at 1:30am to resign and to avoid receiving a counter offer. Ouch! Purnell must have really hated Terry Don. This is a really good entry on Why Purnell left Clemson?

Oh yea…Boston College hired a boring white guy from the Ivy League. If you find anyone that cares let us know. Maybe someone in their next conference will pay more attention to him.

So…who is next? The answer may not be as Red & White and you may think…especially with the lazy uncompetitive Athletics Administration at NC State. This entry is fantastic on many levels and will provide any Wolfpacker who compares the success level and resulting tenure of both Herb Sendek and Sidney Lowe to the discussion in that entry.

WHERE is the CJ Leslie talk???? His bud in KU is gone…this gives State opportunity IMO.

Keep your comments on topic. There has been a thread in the forums for months on CJ.

On Dino, I thought he was a pretty bad coach. On the surface he seemed like a good guy who was in over his head in a tough position. I was out of the country during the post ACC tourney loss comments, so I can’t comment on those. If he didn’t get along with the big money donors, then he wasn’t very strategic. He did seem to lose his teams — particularly the one that hit #1 based on sheer talent and then bowed out with an embarrassing first round loss. No matter what his talent level, he couldn’t seem to win on the road at all. I felt that Dino was a coach who would only last as long as his recruiting lasted. The second that tailed off, then he’d be gone.

It looks like Wellman recognized that as well. I felt like he was in a tough spot when he hired Dino. I’m guessing he has someone lined up now that he likes better and that they’re just hammering out the rest of the contract details. To have raised the buy out money, then this probably was in the works for a while.

When comparing to SL, Dino, Haith and Hamilton are three coaches within the ACC who Lowe has consistently outcoached in game situations. Lowe may not have had better talent and lost, but he’s always out adjusted them. The same can’t be said for Gary, Skinner, Greenburg and Bennett — who I personally think are (or were in the case of Skinner) better game coaches. Coach K and UNC typically trot out such superior talent that I’m not sure whether we’ve really seen how SL compares in games.

On Lowe, part of coaching is getting talent. Either we don’t have talent because Lowe was a bad recruiter, Lowe is a bad developer of good talent, or we have talent and Lowe is a bad coach. There’s really no other way of spinning what have been terrible results.

The same argument can be made for Stevens. Either he was about .500 against the tough teams, then rattled off about 25 straight wins and came within a 3 pointer of winning it all because he’s a good coach, or he’s got great talent. If he’s got great talent at Butler, he can get great talent anywhere. If he doesn’t have great talent (which is suggested by the stars), he got that far by coaching up what he has. Either way, he’s done pretty well. This wasn’t a one year run for him. He’s lost 14 games in 3 seasons.

When comparing Butler’s roster to NC State’s, I think Hayward was the one player comparable to our talent level. At the same time, those 2 star guards had developed light years beyond ours. FD, Javi and JM couldn’t touch those kids, yet we wouldn’t have recruited any of the Butler guards. I also think that JM would be very good in Butler’s system. Again, you can’t have it both ways — Stevens and staff have done a great job developing and coaching their team. He’s a hot commodity right now and rightfully so. I’d take him here in a second based solely on his track record (which is more than we’ve done with our current coach and his two predecessors combined).

It’s just like Fowler. Either he picked bad replacement coaches or he grossly mismanaged the previous situations which caused them to be total rebuild jobs. I don’t understand how Kennel and some others can argue differently. The results are the results and they are NOT worthy of keeping LF employed at NC State.

These results may be due to the fact that we operate on shoe string budgets, are tougher on our student athletes, etc., but then show me what we’re doing to fix the constraints. I’d argue that I’ve not seen anything that fixes the constraints, therefore expecting sudden shifts in results with the same personnel seems highly unlikely.

During the season, I went back and forth on Lowe. I like him and want him to succeed yet I have seen serious, fundamental, programmatic gaps that all of his teams have shared regardless of their rosters. I’m skeptical if freshman guard recruits are suddenly going to cure these ills.

I actually would be fine with Lowe returning next year if he made adjustments to his staff aimed at fixing the flaws. I’ve yet to see that happen and don’t think it will. If I were him, I’d be calling Skinner tomorrow. My guess is that we’re not even trying to upgrade our staff.

I would also be fine with Lowe returning if Fowler were gone. We need a competent, unbiased AD in place reviewing our program in what is a critical season next year. With each passing day though, this seems less likely to happen which means next year we’ll be faced trying to deal with an AD and potentially evaluate whether coaches need to be replaced. We’ve lived this story how many years now?

I personally have zero faith in LF, but I also don’t think he’s made the last couple of coaching hires (as they don’t fit his MO). Therefore, I wouldn’t be upset if we made a coaching change. Again, I doubt we’re proactive enough to make this happen. I also think having LF in place impedes our ability to attract a good coach.

I do think this — if we make no changes (coaching, administration, assistants or constraints), we’re just going to continue in this mess. I applaud Wake Forest for recognizing “what needs to be done tomorrow should be done today” and am envious of the proactive management style that is oh so lacking at my alma mater.

So Stevens wouldn’t last in the ACC? He only took the ACC champ to the wire, and a 26 game winning streak. The game could have easily went the other way against Duke. The man can coach, and is only 33. It don’t matter how many years we give Sid, he can’t. But with Lee Fowler over athletics, we are doomed for mediocrity, and don’t even think he cares. Just drawing a paycheck. Robbery!!!!!!! WTNY?????? Don’t make me puke.

First, I never said anything about Sidney Lowe.

Second, Sean Miller just ended the longest consecutive NCAA tournament appearance streak in the country in an extremely weak Pac 10.

Third, there is zero correlation between winning at Butler and winning in the ACC IMO. NCSU was horrible this year, but we destroyed the national champs when we played them. In other words, Butler’s performance against Duke is not relevant to me.

Butler gets a free pass to the tournament each year and they do not recruit players that will leave early (b/c they cannot get them…I believe I heard they got one kid from Purdue b/c Purdue ran out of scholarships..pretty sure it was the center that always was in foul trouble). This means they can build a team filled with upperclassmen and have a chance to make a run every few years. In the other years, they still get into the tournament b/c no one in their conference can compete with them. Is it possible Stevens is a good coach? Yes it is, but it’s also possible that he’s not and was placed in a great situation. Since he just signed a long term extension, I doubt he wanted to press his luck and leave the safety net he has right now.

You are probably right, it was Butler’s senior laden team that got them there . . .

Guys who averaged double digit minutes:
    Gordon Hayward – Soph
    Shelvin Mack – Soph
    Matt Howard – Junior
    Willie Veasley – Senior
    Ronald Norad – Soph
    Zach Hahn – Junior
    Avery Jukes – Senior
    Shawn Vanzant – Junior

  7. PackHooligan 04/09/2010 at 8:13 AM #

    As opposed to Duke:

    Scheyer – Senior
    Singler – Junior
    Smith – Junior
    Thomas – Senior
    Zoubek – Senior
    Plumlee 1 – Soph
    Plumlee 2 – Freshman

Maybe Coach K is the one who has “lucked out” by not being able to recruit guys who are good enough to go pro early.

If you are going to argue about something, you should at least try to make points that aren’t so easily denounced.

There are reports that Clemson has already interviewed Skinner. Wake is reported to be interested in Minnesota’s Tubby Smith (who played in college at nearby High Point), Wright State’s Brad Brownell (a former UNC Wilmington coach), Dayton’s Brian Gregory, Richmond’s Chris Mooney and Ohio’s John Groce.
