Red Team outlasts White Team in Kay Yow Spring Game, 31-21

Good crowd. Good game. Good weather. And NC State won.

The two offenses both impressed and both defenses probably left something to be desired, but overall it was a good effort from both sides in the Spring Game. The announced crowd of more than 25,000 had plenty to cheer about. Perhaps more important than any of the stats from today’s game is the fact that nobody was seriously injured and the Pack can now move toward fall camp relatively healthy.

I’ll defer to two well-written recaps from today’s action, one from WRAL and one from Pack Pride.

WRAL: NC State gets look at backup in QB in spring game

Jay Smith caught four passes for 96 yards and twotouchdowns to lead the Red team past the White squad 31-21 in North Carolina State’s spring game.

T.J. Graham threw a touchdown pass on a trick play Saturday and made the game-sealing touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter for the Red squad, which featured N.C. State’s first-team defense and second-team offense.

Mike Glennon threw for 423 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions to lead the White team. Starting quarterback Russell Wilson skipped spring practice to focus on baseball, giving Glennon the opportunity to work with the first-team offense.

Pack Pride: Red downs White in Kay Yow Spring Game

Two players who may not see a snap in the 2010 season made the most of their opportunities during the Kay Yow Spring game at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Quarterback Daniel Imhoff and running back Travis Leggett, two walk-ons who were escalated to the second-string offensive unit thanks to the absence of Russell Wilson and the myriad of injuries in the backfield, helped lead the Red team over the White team 31-21 on Saturday afternoon. The game drew over 25,000 fans and helped raise over $21,000 for the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund.

The Wolfpack split into two units for the game with the Red team sporting the second-team offensive unit and the first-team defensive unit. The White team featured the first-team offensive squad and the second-team defense. The Red team was headed up by running backs coach Jeff Swepson while offensive coordinator Dana Bible coached the White team. Teams played the first two 15-minute quarters with normal clock rules but played the final two quarters with a running clock.

Someone who might have gone unnoticed is Mikel Overgaard, the JUCO transfer from Snow College. He’s been moved up from 2string OT to starter on first string offense, for now anyway.

From the below thread, that would appear to be surprise to some of you who projected him as only a ‘depth’ guy. From that same thread, I’ll remind you of the input of a wise sage:

    Re: Mikel Overgaard

He started at left tackle for Snow College. I don’t know much else about him, but I do know Snow is one of the top JUCO programs in the country. They’re usually winning 10-11 games a year, and run an advanced, high scoring offense. They play top competition and serve as a main feeder school to BYU. They send many players to other FBS schools as well. Snow College is also from where we got Olin Hannum.

From what I know about Snow College, I wouldn’t be surprised if Overgaard makes the 2 deep chart by game one.

The Leggett kid is not a scrub, either. I’ve been sort of waiting for him to get some burn at Fullback. He was offered by several D1 schools and was either a 2 or a 3-star prospect who walked-on.

First time in many years the spring game didn’t fall on the same weekend as my annual golf trip. The crowd was great, the football good, and overall a very good production put on by the athletics department.

where was curtis underwood? injured? how long?

  5. choppack1 04/17/2010 at 10:49 PM #

I started attending these games in the mid 90s- and this year was the first one that the production was done right.

#1 – The opened up both sides of the stadium. The lower decks on both sides were more than half full. Good crowd and everyone had room to move about. Good move by school.

#2 – They spliced footage of our signees during breaks.

#3 – They had the band AND music.

We all rightfully criticize our Athletic department when they do stuff wrong – but they need a pat on the back here – alot was done right today.

As far as the game itself.

I thought OL looked good and Glennon looked much improved. I was chasing my 2 year old around alot but I didn’t see any bad passes from him.

“We all rightfully criticize our Athletic department when they do stuff wrong – but they need a pat on the back here – alot was done right today.”

Hear, hear. Everything today was well executed. I hate that me and the boy didn’t get to stay afterwards for pictures on the field, but I’m so glad they brought that back. I have great memories of doing that during the O’Cain era. And I like how the “Running Of The Ex-Player Progeny” during halftime has become a sort of “new” tradition.

  8. YANCSSB 04/17/2010 at 11:00 PM #

I still wish they would’ve announced the “official” attendance as 29,501, though. 🙂

^I agree…except I think the donation set up at the door was lame. And look at the net result..few people paid and many of them only paid $1..sad I think.

As of 6AM Sun, no write up on the News and Observer Webpage. Photos. But no words/article.

Edit: And by 6:23 an article showed up.

Now…we ALL know that the ONLY reason so many people showed up for the UNX spring game was because they thought they’d get on TV.

Great day, and the players are simply a pleasure to spend time with post-game. All just smile and chat with whomever comes up to them. (Mario seemed a little bit annoyed by having to sign autographs, but that was about it.)

The game itself was pretty encouraging to me. Imhoff looked GREAT, the receivers are studs, the defensive lines held their own, and the QB’s had decent time to throw. No running game (guess that happens when your top 4 RB’s from last year are unavailable)… that needs to work out a bit. And finally, the DB’s looked pretty damn good. Some GREAT plays on the ball, improved closing speed, a few beautiful picks.

And having Owen sign the 5X7 I have of him with my twin 8-year-old boys from LAST year’s spring game was pretty cool. As soon as he saw the picture, he broke into a big grin (seems he’s always grinning), looked for the boys, and said, “Yeah – I remember y’all”.

    Good stuff…

What a fun day. Got to see some of the dance team up close. They look so much better from a distance. 😉

Leggett looked like a runner to me. 126 yards on a day when the the number 1 RB Washington struggled. Was the D line that good or was the O line that bad?

Who was the LB who almost ran down Spencer on the long pass? If it was Nate, his leg is healing nicely. Good sign.

Earl Wolfe’s swagger was matched by his performance. A big time DB I’d say.

Any injuries, players in street cloth, or players not at the game (players leaving program)?

Asa Watson is a tightend with wideout speed!

Just added some Youtube vids that we made at the game.

I agree witn Burnbarn on the donation colection. I came in at 1:30 & there was no one at the tables. No where to donate & no one knew where they were. Last year I came in even later and they were still out collecting. I wold have given more than the dollar per head they were aking for.

It is great that we have large attendance each year with fans essentially paying to get in & those in baby blue have to give away a 50″ tv and get ESPN there in order for their fair weather fans to show up. Unless they do the same thing next year my bet is the holes drop back down to the single digit thousand mark like all their other previous years. And the Arrrrghh breaths only had 7K show up in G’ville. More talk than walk there as usual.

We have the best fans, no question.

Concur with Graywolf’s assessment of the game. The son and I went back a couple times for a poster or sked.

Team looks a lot like last years. I hope our plan is to score a lot and have the last possession.

Don’t know if anyone noticed but, of coarse Fowler was absent at the Spring game yesterday. The Chancellor and his wife were in attendance, but not Fowler, I guess he didnt want to hear the boos…

  21. wolfonthehill 04/19/2010 at 5:43 AM #

^ Ah, I remember that when he skipped last year’s spring game, it was taken as a sign that his days were numbered. And of course, they are – but that number may have 4 or 5 digits in it…
