Fowler Comments On Rumors About Lowe & His Own Job Status

The rumor mill heated up fast and red-hot this morning with whispers that NC State head coach Sidney Lowe would be relieved of his duties sometime today.  It looks as though those rumors are false.

According to NC State Athletic Director Lee Fowler, in an article by ESPN’s Andy Katz:

“It started in the coaching circles.  I’ve had to tell [signee] Ryan Harrow’s mother three times this year that there is nothing to worry about.”

Negative Recruiting?

Katz posits that the rumors are part of negative recruiting, which indeed may be the case, considering that prized prospect, former NC State commitment and still undecided CJ Leslie has stated that he plans to make his college decision known in a little more than a week.  Or, perhaps, this may be a coach or coaches trying to poison the well for Sidney Lowe when it comes to a potential member of 2011 recruits, with the timing coming at the beginning of the off-season AAU circuits not far down the road.

Fear, uncertainty and doubt – or FUD, for short – is a tried-and-true disinformation tactic that has worked all too well in the past in industries ranging from computer software to college basketball, not to mention everything else in between.  That said, Katz may well be correct that today’s rumor was the result of negative recruiting by someone.  And while Katz doesn’t name names, it is interesting to note that CJ Leslie was visited here in Raleigh yesterday by Kentucky head coach John Calipari – a man well known for his hard-nosed recruiting style that is right on the edge of NCAA rules and some say common decency.

Or Hard Nose Negotiating?

Another theory is that perhaps Wake Forest is making a move on Texas Head Coach Rick Barnes, and that someone in Barnes camp is attempting to gain contract leverage for the NC native in any negotiations with the Demon Deacons.  If Barnes was being sought by two Big Four ACC schools, he would clearly have the upper hand in negotiations with either school, and the bidding would almost certainly run very high for his signature on a coaching contract.  Almost as good is the perception that there would be two Big Four schools interested in him…with an unsaid idea cast in Wake’s direction being “you better get him while you can, because NC State will be coming into play soon.”

Take your pick, or take none of the above but the bottom line is that either way, it looks like today’s rumor concerning Sidney Lowe was much ado about nothing.

Lowe Feels Upbeat

Lowe, for his part, had this to say to Andy Katz:

Lowe and top assistant Monte Towe said they’ve been deflecting the rumors for days.

“I’m feeling good and feeling as well as I’ve felt in a while and to hear this stuff is just disappointing,” Lowe said. “Credible coaches are saying it’s out there. We’re returning a lot, have won 20 games for the second time here and finished strong. We’re looking pretty good.’’

The timing for NC State is good too with the situations at Wake Forest, Clemson and Boston College in flux after all three had coaching changes.

“We feel like we have a chance to move up,” Lowe said. “We’re feeling really good about our situation.”

Lowe sounds as if he is speaking from a comfortable position, and he probably is comfortable, knowing that his job is secure for next season.

But Lee Fowler Just HAS To Talk About….Lee Fowler

Another interesting aspect of Katz’ article is that Lee Fowler used Katz’ conversation with him as a launching point to address his house being on the market:

“They’ve had me fired about seven times, too,” Fowler said. “I put my house on the market because our house is 4200 square feet and our kids are out of the house. That created a firestorm and yet we have a new chancellor here on Monday and there’s been no discussion about me.”

That I have a hard time believing, given the constant and consistent swell of rumors surrounding Lee Fowler.  A flash-fire rumor is one thing, and those can take on the nature of the children’s game of “telephone” where things are twisted out of control quickly.  A slow stream of rumors from people who ask not to be quoted directly and that anything they say be taken as background information is another, and those are the sorts of rumors that have been surrounding Fowler for months.  In that case, indeed, there are discussions — perhaps not official ones, but discussions nonetheless — about the state of athletics leadership at NC State and the consistently declining standing overall of State’s athletics program.

In any case, a man who has had ten years to build an athletics program that has resulted in a current ranking of 99th in the Directors Cup standings – 65th ranking out of 66 BCS schools – should never feel secure in his job, ever.  If Lee Fowler is secure in his leadership role, that probably speaks more about the university than it does him.  It’s difficult to believe that an institution that requires and demands excellence from its students and faculty to not require it in any form from the leader of its athletics programs.

    SaccoV:

I think the answer is here: ” I don’t buy the claim that this is “negative recruiting” because we don’t have anyone really on the fence (IMO, CJL is heading to Kentucky, and Lo Brown probably won’t qualify). ”

If your opinion on CJL is incorrect, then there is something to be gained by trashing Sid.

if you really read the quotes from the article, all it says is that there has been no discussion and that Fowler and Lowe aren’t aware that they are getting fired.

Maybe, but more likely than not, that’s wishful thinking.

I hate to say this but it speaks volumes that “insiders” rely on Idiot Central for information about the NCSU athletic program! Holy Crap, we’re an ECTC ‘rival’ and the guys at IC have scopped us.
Yeah, Rick Barnes is taking the Wake job, CJL is coming to State, and LF is getting fired, yeah, yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah, etc etc etc.
Next thing you know someone is going to be saying that Cal is flying in on a black jet!LOL
State was willing to THROW MONEY at Barmes 4 years ago and he flatly turned us down, I cannot imagine him going to Wake now. I also can’t imagine the Texas folks letting him get away. If he’s talked to Wake its just a ploy to make the Longhorn faithful appriciate him after what they would consider a disappointing season.

Fowler has got to go, this is starting to get comical.

Alpha- I agree. I do find it odd that a coach would just start this rumor and that the coach gave a date on which the firing would happen. If he was using this as negative recruiting, it would easily be proven wrong by the firing not taking place. A better negative recruiting tactic would focus on the uncertainty of Lowe’s future, beginning after next season.

If is foolish to think that when someone tells you that they know something that they are telling you everything they know or have heard.

In other words, if you think I posted the original thread in the forums based solely on a repost of an IC forum post, you would be totally wrong.

Then again, Andy Katz was no doubt working his story at the same time we posted what we were hearing (and they were just rumors, like it turned out to be) and I really doubt he got his initial lead from IC either.

also Herb Sendek turned down Clemson..LOL

  8. nav 04/09/2010 at 3:31 PM #

I would have loved to see Herb back in the ACC. Just not coaching us.

  9. GoldenChain 04/09/2010 at 3:52 PM #

LOL Calm down Alpha, you ought to know me well enough to know when I’m trying to get a rise out of you.
Should I be surprised that Idiot Central would be the source (or at least on the front edge of) negative rumors about State? Of course not!
I know from being a mole on that board myself that they can come out with some crazy stuff though.
Of course I don’t think you would have posted such unless you had multiple sources. Then again I don’t want any of the child posters to get the idea that IC is a credible source for info either.

I can only hope that if Sid were leaving that it is because there is actually a plan in place to bring someone else in a seemless transition in a way that would allow Sid to move on “to a better oportunity” probably as an assistant in the NBA.
Or better yet, let Sid be AD!!!

    Starting?

    It’s cool, GC. Well played.

I’m headed to the bar now, gents. First round is on me.

One thing about a lie, even if it is disproven, as this one will be by 5pm today, is that it can be effective if it plants a seed of doubt in someones mind. IF this was really started by another coach, I suspect the exact date was given to lend some credibility to the story.

And really doesn’t the fact that we are even talking about this lend it credibility? If the same rumor were started about Roy Williams nobody would waste 5 seconds talking about it. In 6 months this incident will be remembered by some as “that day Lowe almost got fired” and the rumor will have worked.

And finally how is this for a twisted theory? Lowe started the rumor himself knowing that the finger of blame would be pointed at Cal. Lowe could then ask CJ Leslie, do you really want to play for that lying DBag? If he started this lie about me, what lies is he telling you?

“An AD that is doing a good job does not have a self admiited 7 rumors about his firing” – Pack Mentality

    You nailed it.

  14. grizzlyman 04/09/2010 at 4:30 PM #

If the NCSU athletic department wasn’t the definition of “uncompetitive”, “mediocre”, “leadership deficientt”, etc. this wouldn’t be a recurring repetitive thing. Like the previous poster said, if this rumor was about Roy, no one would think twice about it. However, the rumor centers around NCSU athletics, so it wouldn’t be unreasonable that Lowe would be let go, what has he really proven? What has any coach really proven lately?

  15. choppack1 04/09/2010 at 5:18 PM #

I tell you – Lee Fowler’s audacity shows you all you need to know about NC State University.

I mean, can you imagine bragging to someone that there’s been rumors about you being fired 7 times – but hey, I’ve got a contract w/ 3 years left on it.

It’s not funny – it’s sad and infuriating.

  16. CStanley 04/09/2010 at 5:24 PM #

“Everyone associated with this university should be disappointed and ashamed that our “leader” uses every opportunity in a public forum to disparage this fan base.”

    Agreed. He’s a bastard.

    1) Lowe is not going anywhere
    2) Fowler is not going anywhere
    3) CJ is going to Kentucky

Now that you all have that straight, are their any other questions? Can we please stop the nonsense now?

    Thanks. Move along . . . nothing to see here . . .

  18. 61Packer 04/09/2010 at 6:38 PM #

I can add to rky’s list above:

    4) Brown doesn’t qualify
    5) WF hires Barnes
    6) Clem hires Turgeon
    7) NCAAT goes to 96 teams next season
    7) Football goes 5-7 this fall
    8) Harrow turns out to be another Gonzalez
    9) State goes 6-10 in ACC (and is drubbed by UNC, Clemson, WF twice) 10) State manages 2 wins in ACCT and gets in NCAAT as #96
    11) With Big Dance invitation in hand, Jed cites improvement of men’s b-ball and awards contract ext to Lowe
    12) We eagerly await next year

  19. TheAliasTroll 04/09/2010 at 6:58 PM #

    13) Fowler gets contract extension until 2025

  21. rky 04/09/2010 at 7:46 PM #

61Packer & Troll . . . thank you for rounding out the list of Truths As We Know Them At NCSU. I’m just looking forward to hearing who Wake gets for their coach so I can jump on their bandwagon.

The blind leading the blind. LF has made us a laughingstock.

  24. wolfy85 04/09/2010 at 9:52 PM #

LF must go. Cal must go, he’s hurting the NCAA. I’ve heard very reliable rumors about Wall “finding” cash last year. I doubt Cal started this, but it’s well within his realm of immoral conduct. Someone just made a Ryan Harrow to Javi comparison, please never do that again. Anyone have any good info as to whether brown will qualify?

I think John Calipari/UK needs to negatively recruit NC State about as much as much as Hugh Hefner has to talk down Pee Wee Herman to the blondes he collects.

I wonder if someone closer to home would posit such thoughts, just to keep a missing need (sudden athleticism in a long body) out of the program. Of course, do Hugh Hefs evil doppelgangers, have to trash Pee Wee Herman behind his back…..

Related, I bet Lee calls Mark Maye to tell him Sid Lowe isn’t going anywhere.
