C.J. Leslie will announce decision soon…for real this time

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’ve had just about enough of the C.J. Leslie saga. I understand he’s a great high school player who will likely be a great college player and this is just how things are nowadays with recruiting, but at this point it’s just old.

Just in the last two weeks Leslie has hinted that he would announce at last weekend’s Jordan Brand Classic in New York City. Then he changed his mind, saying he would wait until after an official visit to Florida following the all-star game. Then the trip to Florida got canceled, by Florida. Now, Leslie says the day is near. I’ll believe when I see it.

That being said, NC State needs to get Leslie. He would make an immediate impact on next year’s team and would get serious minutes. There’s been plenty of discussion about Leslie and his recruitment on the SFN forums.

Here’s the latest update on Leslie’s recruitment.

C.J. Leslie will announce college decision too

Nearing the end of his years amid a bizarre American ritual – and nearing 11 p.m. on Saturday – C.J. Leslie emerged from a locker room in the innards of Madison Square Garden looking vaguely weary.

“I’m done,” he said, beaming his huge and winning smile, but no, that’s not what he meant.

He meant he’s done with far-flung nationally televised all-star games, limit two per phenom per NCAA mandate. The 6-foot-8 Holly Springs resident with the shimmering versatility remains undone with the fielding of the question long yammered around him.

^ I also suspect he has good athlete’s health insurance to protect future earnings.

  2. Thinkpack17 04/20/2010 at 3:47 PM #

And there is a ton of money to be made in Europe, which his game may be better suited for. Even if there is a lockout.

There is noway State is getting Leslie. I wish I could say differently… but when it comes down to final decisions, State never gets the guy. Favors, Wall, Cousins, Etc.

Singler is a very good basketball player who chose to attend Duke not only to develop as a basketball player but also to receive an excellent education. He is staying to complete a 4-year basketball career and to receive his degree from a very highly rated academic institution. I respect that decision and I wish him all the best in both areas. He is a throwback the pre-sixties and early seventies college bball players.

I like Alpha’s point: a 1 and done who went to State and has success and is a high draft pick can only help the program. … Singler is a perfect Duke recruit. Don’t confuse yourself though…there is NO other school that can recruit top talent at will and keep them 4 years. UK, UCLA, Indiana, even UNC lose players early because Duke has an almost exclusive niche recruiting platform with upper crust top end talent.

You guys want to know why CJ is waiting to decide? 2 reasons:

    1) Is Patrick Patterson coming back for his senior year at Kentucky?

    2) Is Terrance Jones coming to Kentucky or staying on the West coast?

If either of these happen at Kentucky then I think NC State will get CJ Leslie (1 heck of a player I might add)! I would love to see him come if these both happen at Kentucky but it wont happen.

  7. 61Packer 04/20/2010 at 9:00 PM #

NCSU has about as much chance of getting CJ Leslie next season as they do of getting rid of Lee Fowler and/or Sidney Lowe next season.

Until these two depart our campus, no top-level recruit with professional aspirations is going to end up in a Wolfpack jersey unless his sport is football.

  8. packfan03 04/20/2010 at 9:50 PM #

    ^Really, 61Packer?

    JJ Hickson: 5 stars
    Ryan Harrow: 5 stars
    Lorenzo Brown: 5 stars

What is your definition of a top-level recruit? Every time I read your posts, I scratch my head. You obviously put considerable effort into being negative. I’m no sunshine club member, and understand that Lowe’s results in his first four haven’t been stunning, but I can be fair enough to call a spade a spade.

But don’t let objectivity get in your way of judging Lowe…

  9. packfan03 04/20/2010 at 9:55 PM #

Honestly, we are starting to get talent at EVERY position. How can you be negative about Lowe when, despite Fowler, our program is beginning to look like it belongs on paper. It’s been about 20 years guys…

Regardless of CJ’s decision, we’ll be a good team next year.

  10. 61Packer 04/20/2010 at 10:00 PM #

Right on, packfan03. Just wait until next year.

So hypothetically, let’s just say that CJL really already knew he was coming to NCSU. Let’s just say Sid knew it too, which is why he, and our athletic department apparently lets CJ on campus everyday at the Dail Center using our facilities. I’ve heard folks say he’s on campus playing ball with our team everyday.

Then…let’s just say he decommitted so that he could help bring the national attention on our program. He would wait until the very end, have a press conference, have a bunch of hats in a line.
UK, UF, UCONN, NCSU and Oregon. Then he picks up the State hat, puts it on and throws up the Wolfpack sign. Maybe he knew he wanted all the attention and recruiting, free trips etc and decided, “hell, why not help out NC State along the way”. If he really was the last player so highly recruited, that would actually make some other recruits go, wow, out of all those hats on that table, CJL picked up NCSU’s hat. I wonder what’s going on down there in Raleigh?

One of my friends is a manager over at 5Star Chinese Restaurant downtown, and apparently there is a party there tomorrow night and CJL is supposed to be there…he’s gonna piss off a bunch of folks in Raleigh if he disses us like that.

Or maybe I’m just dreaming, and he’s going to UK after all. Who knows. I’m just talking here.

I spoke with Farnold Degand tonight at an ACC Senior Barnstorming game in Fayetteville. I asked him if CJ Leslie is coming to State. He said that no one on the team knows if he is coming, but that he has been in the State gym playing pickup games with our players for the last 2 weeks. I don’t know what that all means, but I thought I would pass on the info.
Farnold is a really nice guy. He played a great game tonight. He made multiple nice assists to Ginyard, Thopmpson, Zoubek and Thomas, and he showed the high schoolers some ballhandling and quickness that left them scratching their heads. He had a great time. He pulled a couple of kids out of the stands to shoot his foul shots for him. My daughter and I told him how much we had enjoyed watching him play the last 3 years, and he said he really wished he had one more year left. Ginyard, Zoubek, Thomas, Horner, Thompson and McFarland were also very nice to the kids and signed lots of autographs and posed for many pictures. It was a fun night with some nice young men who represented their universities well.

i’ve got this bad feeling that he’s not coming to state. and im pretty sure luke’s gone for good. i’ve heard from numerous people that ryan and zo dont like luke.

Another site is reporting that Lowe had an in-house visit with CJL tonight.
I’m all giddy….. I hope he’s ready to flash the Pack sign on National TV, and get the talking heads from ESPN drooling over a Wolfpack class of recruits for the first time in a longggggg while.

    GO PACK!

Not sure if any of you guys have seen this youtube video, but it is sick. It is labeled “The Future of Wolfpack Basketball”. Check it out, you want be dissapointed. It gave me chills!

  16. JeremyH 04/21/2010 at 1:56 AM #

That’s weird…. my enthusiasm is not increasing with the elevated hype surrounding all this. Oh, I know… experience.

I don’t care if CJ’s playing pick-up games in Lowe’s driveway wearing a wolfpack t-shirt, while his mom stands on the porch with a shotgun standing guard for Calipari, while Hodge cheers him on with the little hand-wolf-thingy…
we don’t know anything until the P-R-E-S-S-E-R

  17. Tiew 04/21/2010 at 7:30 AM #

Thanks for posting that story Sweet Jumper, it made me smile.

  18. wolfmanmat 04/21/2010 at 7:31 AM #

I would love to see CJ come to State. I think it could still happen. I think it is possible that the inside guys have some idea he is coming to State but just can’t say anything…which explains why Luke decommitts; he wants to play, which won’t happen with Leslie/Tracy/Howell/Painter in the frontcourt. My biggest question, though, is WILL LO Qualify? We need him and Harrow in the backcourt. If it’s just Harrow, then this recruiting class gets a whole lot less appealing and our team only improves 3-4 wins over last year rather than maybe 5-7.

  19. PoppaJohn 04/21/2010 at 8:43 AM #

Man, hard to gauge which way this thing is going to fall, but I do agree with earlier posters who suggest he is waiting to see how all of the dominos fall recruiting wise and NBA draft wise. Which means to me that he is going to do what’s best for CJL, and he’s not going to fall in love with a school / coach / arena / etc. And there is nothing wrong with that – except that we can be sure he’ll leave as soon as the money is there.

The ‘Brown qualifying’ talk worries me. I thought that fifth year of HS smoothed the path to college so we didn’t need to worry so much about that. Next year’s expectations really go sour if we miss on CJL AND Brown doesn’t show.

The only mildly encouraging thing is our history – we NEVER, EVER do anything the easy way!! ;o) So maybe CJL just shows up on our doorstep in August after we’ve all given up on the idea. Or we miss out on everybody but are good anyway. Can’t wait to see how it plays out.

  20. Thinkpack17 04/21/2010 at 9:06 AM #

Nice Story SJ. And yes JG, that was a great video. Someone needs to send it to CJL.

Another site is reporting that Lowe had an in-house visit with CJL tonight.

TOB4PREZ, which site is reporting this? I haven’t seen a word of it anywhere as of yet.

If this is true, I’m irritated about this. Cal visits him and it’s all over the media. How could Sidney pay him a visit and there not be word one about it in our main blogs, or on gopack.com???

    Where did you see this?

  22. coachkoh 04/21/2010 at 10:39 AM #

I was not talking about an in home visit being a violation,I was talking about watching a recruit work out as was stated earlier.

  23. Rick 04/21/2010 at 1:01 PM #

“If CJ chooses UK, as expected, all we will hear for weeks is gloom and doom over his decision”

Come on. You know the talking heads will tell us we do not need him and we have plenty of talent.

Then when we underperform it will be because CJL did not commit.

  24. Rick 04/21/2010 at 1:03 PM #

“Honestly, we are starting to get talent at EVERY position. How can you be negative about Lowe when, despite Fowler, our program is beginning to look like it belongs on paper”

When have I heard this before?

The proof is in the pudding. Lowe has to actually accomplish something before people will believe he can. The time for blind optimism is long past.
