NC State might be the No. 11 seed in the ACC Tournament programs available at the Greensboro Coliseum, but for the second night in a row the Wolfpack certainly didn’t play the part. One night after upsetting No. 6 seed Clemson, NC State picked up another victory, picking off No. 3 seed Florida State 58-52 and earning a semi-final match up with No. 7 seed Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets knocked off No. 2 seed Maryland in the first game of the evening session, 69-64.

After committing 12 first half turnovers in an ugly first 20 minutes, the Wolfpack went to the locker room down three to the Seminoles, 25-28. In the second half, however, the Wolfpack turned it over just three times and outscored the ‘Noles by nine to pick up the six point victory.

Scott Wood put on a shooting display reminiscent of NC State’s trip to Florida State in January, a game in which Wood scored a career-high 31. On this night against the Noles, Wood poured in 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting. Two straight threes by Wood midway through the second half put NC State up by nine points and set the stage for the closing minutes.

Javi Gonzalez, who hurt his ankle against Clemson and was a game time decision against FSU, led NC State with 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals. Tracy Smith, who suffered a hip injury in Friday night’s game, also finished with 13 points.

Gonzalez made the play of the night with two minutes remaining, stealing an entry pass before he fed Tracy Smith for a dunk which put NC State up 54-48.

Solomon Alabi led FSU with 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, but no other player scored in double figures.

Despite suffocating defense from Florida State for much of the night, the Wolfpack still managed to shoot 44 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the arc, thanks mostly to Wood. State held the Seminoles to 38 percent shooting and Florida State shot just 3 of 18 from behind the arc. Go here for the full box score.

    NIT, whom wants that now????
I say, play zone and press Gtech and we will win big and make free throws and keep being patient because gtech is another one of those reckless teams(Clemson,Fl state )that is not smart!!!

And hope for Miami to shoot 60 percent!!!
But i would take our chances against Duke, we have better athletes and have always been that way!!
But if we win the ACC Title, what seed do we get 12th?
Dreaming yes, but reality, i really like our chances sat agaisnt tech.
We have beaten the two best defensive teams out there.

You know fellows, tonight’s one of those nights it’s a lot of fun to be a State fan.

    It really, really is.

Some of y’all are dreaming crazy dreams. But you know what? No one ever did anything that was great without dreaming a crazy dream.

I remember sitting in my little 500 SF apartment in 1983 drinking PBR’s from the Car Shop telling my buddies that State might win the whole damn thing. That was the night they won the ACC Tournament. You know the rest of that story.

So don’t let me tell ya that it ain’t gonna happen. It just might!

Thank god we are not playing Maryland next. Georgia Tech is SO much easier to beat for us!

But if we win the ACC Title, what seed do we get 12th?

I’d take a 16 if they offered it right now.

And the 1 seed wouldn’t like that one bit, because it would mean they were in for a GAME.

Hell of an effort just as the first round. Regardless of what happens going forward one can’t fault the effort.
Like Alpha I’ll take a 16 seed or even an NIT invite if that is what comes. This team has grown (players and coaching staff) and that is all for the good.

I love this for Horner and Degand. Two guys who have shown honor and toughness, endured setbacks and steadily progressed into serviceable players. This ought to at least extend their careers into the NIT, and they deserve something special in their last go round. See you all at the barn on Lee St, 16:00, be there in red!!

I was real worried at first with all those dunks they were getting. But damn if we didn’t pull it off. I love how we maintained our lead down the stretch. They made it easy for us missing a bunch of shots but who the hell cares. We won!!!

win or lose now, it is now fun to watch them play. After we beat duke on Jan 20. Watching those 7 in a row loses (not counting the win over the powerhouse NC Central) was pure torture. Dribbling around until the shot clock winds down and heaving up a desperation shot was awful. Don’t forget that we have been very fortunate in the seeding and in who we play in this tournament. Clemson, Florida State and GT are all very tall and athletic, but often very careless with the ball. If somehow by the grace of God we get by GT then know this DUKE AIN”T CARELESS WITH THE BALL!!!

  11. GoldenChain 03/13/2010 at 7:39 AM #

Duke isn’t careless with the ball but then again we have proven that we can beat them too. In their handful of losses they ahve been completely out of phase.

Getting the 11th seed was disappointing and should have been a lot tougher road but the way it has worked out has really been to our advantage.

    GT i s beatable
I have never seen a team lazy their way through in bounds passes like they do. We should take advantage of that because their athletic ability is imposing in a half court game.

I want State to win today big time, but in another sense I’m not sweating it- as noted above, it feels GOOD to be a State fan right now. That’s all I ask for. And props to Javi for last night- he played beautifully. Props to Smith for being so freaking clutch. Props to Wood, etc…The spark is there.
