Friday Fowler Fodder

It is Friday, March 19th…and, even though we have only mentioned this date once on the blog (click here for the detailed background that you will need), there are a lot of Wolfpack fans buzzing around with heightened anticipation today.

Take my advice…relax…enjoy the fact that Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack men are still playing basketball.

To set the table, the following is gleaned from last week’s much more detailed entry:

For the better part of the last month, the frequency and consistency of rumors related to a Lee Fowler departure has significantly intensified. Many different sources have shared with SFN that Lee Fowler will ‘retire/resign’ as NC State’s Athletics Director at some in the very near future. The scenarios around Fowler’s ultimate departure usually takes the form of one of the two of the following:

(1) Some of the rumors have Fowler departing NC State in May, coinciding with the end of the school year. This version centers on the premise that Fowler has been given an ultimatum to have found a new job and hit the bricks by the end of the year…or else. This would have Fowler riding into the sunset with another of SFN’s most disliked NC State administrators, Tom Stafford.

* Related to this point – SFN has recently learned that within the last few months Lee Fowler made himself a candidate for the open Athletics Directorship at San Diego State University. Unfortunately for all of us, Fowler was again passed over for the job when Jim Sterk was announced about a month ago.

(2) The more intense and immediate version of the rumors have Fowler ‘retiring’ next week as the Wolfpack’s basketball season is expected to be completed. The most widely speculated and most logical date of departure would be a Friday afternoon announcement on March 19th as the news and attention to the story would be significantly diluted by the NCAA Tournament first round.

If you have followed some of our conversations on our Message Boards over the last few days then you have probably been able to keep pace with the educated speculation that evolved all week.

As we made excruciatingly clear in our entry last week, we aren’t ‘reporting’ anything as fact nor are we ‘predicting’ any hard-coded timeline. We have not confirmed enough to ‘report’ them to you ‘news’. But – hopefully you have been a member of our community long enough to understand – we do feel comfortable enough in the strength of our sources and the momentum of what we are hearing to lay the information to you for your own processing and analysis.

The following is a combination of some recently gathered information married to some speculation and analysis. We’ve got more on the speculation front to offer here, but we want to try to find some corroboration before throwing it out:

* I would be very surprised if any kind of announcement on Lee Fowler’s future would happen before NC State’s Basketball season ends. Of course, the moment I say this there will probably be some kind of announcement hit the wires at 6pm tonight.

* You must realize that the specualted plan of a March 19th announcement was originally constructed with the presumption that the Wolfpack’s basketball season would have come to a conclusion and there would be little-to-no media attention and focus on West Raleigh. Add to that expected reality a late Friday afternoon with the entire world focused on the NCAA Basketball Tournament and you have the perfect recipe for flying under the news radar. In fact, we may be hearing about some scandalous story from John Edwards at any moment now.

* But, reality unfolded different than plan. There is current media attention on NC State because the team is still playing. What if we keep winning and need to go to NYC with the NIT? That, and all of the related logistics of such a trip, are made much more difficult without a ‘leader’. (Hell…think about who we are talking about here. Do you really think that Lee Fowler is going to give up a potentially FREE trip to New York in the spring where he could spend all of the school’s money on nice meals and cigars on which to chew?)

* Additionally, would you REALLY want to miss the hilarity that Twitter’s Lee_Folwer could produce given the canvas of “Coach” and his Cougar in New York City for a few days?

* The following was posted on one of our message board threads and I think should be shared here:

Don’t get too anxious. It’s going to happen whether it happens today and causes a ruckus amongst the NCSU community (distracting them from tomorrow) or whether it happens in another week. Fowler not announcing a retirement for another 7 days isn’t going to ruin NC State anymore than he already has.

* As an aside…just as we found the timing of these comments last week particularly interesting, I find it peculiar that BobLeeSwagger has decided to share some comments. Really? Right now? Out of nowhere? After 10 years of being justified to say the exact same thing? What in the world is different today from any of the last 2,500 days or so?

The Future of Lee Fowler – Has this itty bitty pulse blip of Pack Hoops saved Lee from a Be Gone-ing? Take away one Saturday in late November and this sports year has been odious for Wolf loyalists. …… Dickie B. has always had “non-revenue sports success” as his safety net. NCSU’s non-revenue sports are “non” in every respect. I suspect its time for a change for all concerned. ….

Folks, let’s enjoy the NIT ride and then let everything else play out on its own. If SFN were worried that a core shift had occurred in these developments then we would feel differently. But, right now the weather is beautiful and the Wolfpack is still playing and we all have reason to think that Lee Fowler’s tenure in Raleigh will be ending soon.

So…enjoy yourself and let’s start getting ready for one helluva celebration party!

SFN: LOL! As you probably are aware…we don’t allow people who prove an inability to process what they read above a third grade level to post here. Nor do we choose to pay for people to misrepresent the truth while criticizing us. But, thanks for going on record so we have something to point to…and for wasting your time posting.

Charlie Cobb riding to the rescue….mmm where have I heard that before?

  3. StateFans 03/19/2010 at 5:01 PM #

I seriously doubt that Charlie Cobb would be our next AD. But, I seriously doubted that the NC State Board of Trustees would have given Lee Fowler a contract extension in 2007. See how valuable that is!

The thoughts of Lee Fowler waiting for State to lose in the NIT (or win it all) are almost enough to make me want State to lose. (Let me make this clear — it’s NOT enough, but it’s ALMOST enough!) After all, it would just be one NIT loss, but we’d be rid of Fowler that much sooner.

If the rumors are true, that is.

Having said that, GO PACK!!! BEAT UAB!!! THEN GET RID OF FOWLER!!!

I find it somewhat comforting that SFN chooses to post this now, although my patience is wearing very thin.

    GO PACK! BEAT UAB BADDDDDDDDDDDD!

How are y’alls patience wearing thin?

It has been TEN YEARS of this. What are another couple of weeks or couple of months?

Nothing major needs to be done in the next few months, anyway.

Realistically, nothing needs to happen for at least a year. In the sports most of us are primarily concerned of (basketball, football, baseball), our coaches are set for at least next season.

It’s the terrifying prospect of Fowler hiring another coach in ANY of these sports that is terrifying.

On a side note, I heard an interview with our tennis coach a few days ago and came away impressed.

    HBRWHAMMER,

    You could certainly do worse…

Maryland captured a remarkable nine national championships during the past four seasons.

I wonder which sports? I bet Ralphie wormed is way in to those championship dinners!

I was hoping the #FF tweet meant that today was the day.

I noticed that Lee (Mr. “I KNOW Basketball”) Fowler was NOT at many of the “honor” celebrations at the RBC this year. His ABSENCE was almost an alarm going off…

OK….I was at the ACCT this past week and sat (my rear is still sore) through all the games…except the Sunday one.

I had very good seats and could observe the goings on in the coliseum…

On Friday evening, when we played FSU, a tall, gray haired individual started making his way from the Pep Band side over to the bench area. An LF Siting….STOP THE DIGITAL DOWNLOADS….

LF was dressed in a RED, yes RED, POLYESTHER Blazer.

For those of you that have never heard Jimmy V. talk about the Red Blazer that he was required to wear….you really do NOT get the full impact of this.

LF, stepped out of history….the Blazer was at least 25 years old. I will give him credit….wherever he got it (maybe in a rag bag in the basement)…it did fit.

SO, here is our AD, swaggering across the baseline….glad handing Mr. Wuff….making body contact with the cheerleaders, talking the the camera persons….

    SO…LF made his appearance….

Will it be his LAST? I DO HOPE SO….

    LF…RIP…..GO AWAY….

Oregon needs a new AD now, and a BB coach…

  13. StateFans 03/19/2010 at 8:45 PM #

^ Hell…LF says he knows how to do both!

  14. WendellPackster 03/19/2010 at 9:24 PM #

Praise the Lord! That jerk can’t leave fast enough!

Now i see why this site is so one-sided. You just delete whatever you want.

You need to change your blog site from statefansnation to anti-statefansnation…

By the way, I am positive I have more education than you. I actually have a job and 30+ years experience. I have followed NCSU athletics as a fan significantly more than you. I have donated more money to the wolfpack club than you will ever do in your lifetime.

Both the academic and athletic administration have been devoid of leadership for so long that when the Oblinger situation hit the media, a rush of air could be heard returning to the vacuum that was NC State. Now it appears that fresh air is also ridding us of the last of the foul odors of spoilage and we can only hope that the new administration will cleanse the future for NC State, its alumni and fans.

Good luck Lee and don’t let the door hit you on the way out!

Enjoy the lake and don’t come back.

    Bring back Charlie!

^Lee a basketball coach and AD? This credits my long standing theory that Lee Fowler is actually Les Robinson after a couple procedures and a lot of makeup.

  19. TopTenPack 03/20/2010 at 6:26 PM #

Lee has shown that he is out of touch with the changing world. The reason he still has his job is he does manage money well. I happen to think we can manage money well and win a few conference championships on the way.

Please let this be true. Out with LEE!!

While we are at it, can we get rid of Tom Stafford and Tim Luckadoo too?

  20. StateFans 03/20/2010 at 6:53 PM #

Stafford is gone at the end of the semester

  21. Cardiff Giant 03/21/2010 at 1:24 PM #

I too remain hopeful that Fowler will soon be history, and what a day that will be.

I am troubled by the Cobb talk. I have nothing against him, but NC State needs to conduct a national search for a top professional. Given NC State’s Good Old Boy network does little but perpetuate second-ratedness and failure, we need someone wholly unaffiliated with that network. New chancellor – new AD – new SID, as Anabelle Myers also needs sending out with the morning trash.

  22. StateFans 03/21/2010 at 1:34 PM #

^ Absolute amen to that. And, hope to see a helluva lot more of you around here and on the Boards.
