From my first experience on campus as an assistant professor of engineering mechanics in 1968 until today, I have held a special affection for North Carolina State University. Therefore, it is a particular honor for me to serve this university at this time.

Looking back over the past year, I’m struck by both the history and the promise of this institution. The unique land-grant mission of NC State has led to our playing a pivotal role in the advancement of North Carolina and its citizens through the years. This is a place of innovative teaching, where students are prepared for careers in a fast-moving—and quickly shrinking—world.

It is a place of innovative research, where outstanding faculty are discovering and exploring solutions that are shaping the way we deal with our problems. It is a place of statewide extension, where the work of the university reaches well beyond campus boundaries.

The following pages highlight some of the people who exemplify the spirit of NC State. They are creators and innovators, healers and teachers. Their mission—and ours—is to fulfill the promise of this institution, to find solutions to difficult problems, strengthen the economic health of our communities and improve the lives of our citizens.

Please join me in celebrating that spirit as we look to the future with confidence and hope.

    Very nice indeed, good stuff! I’ll be interested to see where Woodson makes changes and/or stays the course with what Woodward began.

    Nice site indeed, but where was the tribute to Professor Holtzman whom passed recently?
    Was he not an important piece of the humanities and social science department???

    1st in total disregard for anything involving athletics.

    Kinda surprised the Vet school dropped… I thought it was at 3, and figured once the new Research Center (Iams?) was finished there was a chance of a bump…

    Of course I believe all of this was heard 2nd hand, so I have never actually seen rankings of top 3 before…

    Still pretty impressive..

    NCSU has been regarded highly as one of the best values recently, as is shown in these numbers.

    But I want to see us move up as simply one of the best, then the value will return extraordinary dividends.

    Georgia Tech students that maintain above a B average get tuition covered by the state. GT doesn’t boast their value, they just boast their success rate overall, competing with the Stanford and MIT’s of the world.

    We need to be more like GT. (and as a side note, GT outperforms us in sports as well, and it’s nearly impossible for student athletes to take an easy course load there)

    You missed a bullet:

    * 12th in ACC athletics

  8. Prowling Woofie 02/24/2010 at 8:43 AM #

    * Probably 8th in SoCon athletics…

    Nice report, very glitzy. Conspicuously absent from the atheletics section was our Director Cup standings. Since this is the yard stick for sucess, guess we’re too embarrassed to publish the number.

    A better hospital gown…I’m glad they’re doing something about THAT!

    Spanky, it says that the ranking of 5th is based on a 2006 report, so maybe it’s different now. I guess there are no current or more recent reports that rank Vet schools?

    NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine has been ranked in the top 5 pretty much since it graduated its first class in 1985. For prospective students, I would rank it differently for various types of species or practice types. For example, we would be near the top for small animal medicine but out of the top ten for food animal medicine(other than poultry) or possibly equine medicine.
