100 Years of NC State Basketball by the Numbers: Sidney Lowe

As we celebrate 100 years of NC State basketball tradition, it can be interesting to take a look back at our heritage and make comparisons with the current program. Over the last century, there have been 18 head basketball coaches, 13 of which coached in either the Southern Conference or the ACC. Currently Sidney Lowe has the 2nd worst conference winning percentage of any coach in NC State basketball history and the worst since the inception of the Southern Conference in the early 1920s.

Harry Hartsell coached the first 2 seasons in which NC State was a member of the Southern Conference from 1922-1923 and had a conference record of 2-7 (.222).

After the Virginia Tech loss on Wednesday, Sidney Lowe fell below Les Robinson and has the 2nd worst conference winning percentage in school history with an ACC record of 17-41 (.293).

Below is a table of the conference winning percentages of the 13 NC State coaches that coached in the Southern Conference and/or the ACC.

The argument has been made time and time again that it takes 4 years for a coach to get his own players in the program and shouldn’t be judged until after that time (although coaches like Tony Bennett and Bob Huggins would certainly disagree with that theory). So let’s look at how the other former State coaches did under similar circumstances. Nine of the 13 coaches listed above were on the job for at least 4 seasons. If you look at conference winning percentage for their first 4 years, Sidney Lowe has the worst record of any coach in the history of NC State basketball.

sid table 2

An interesting observation, since Norm Sloan finished at .500 in ACC play in his first 4 years, the winning percentage for each following coach gets a little bit worse. At this rate, Lowe’s successor will only win a couple of ACC games in his first 4 years.
Sloan – .500
Valvano – .411
Robinson – .339
Sendek – .328
Lowe – .293

If you look at the situations recent coaches inherited, Robinson took over a program on probation that was coming off a scandal and had increased academic standards (but did inherit Monroe, Corchiani and Gugliotta). Lowe inherited a program that had been to 5 straight NCAA tournaments (and inherited Atsur, Costner, Fells and McCauley). Lowe also coached in an ACC watered down by expansion and, in my opinion, an ACC with a lower talent level across the league than in the early to mid 90s. Even Herb Sendek, who is certainly not the most popular coach here at SFN, took over a program from Robinson that hadn’t been to the postseason in 5 years (inheriting Benjamin, Harrison, Hyatt and Strong) and still had a better ACC record than Lowe in their first 4 years.

Sidney Lowe also has the worst conference winning percentage of any of the 12 ACC coaches in their first 4 years at the school. The only ACC coach to not win at least 7 conference games in their 4th year on the job was Gary Williams. We would have to win 5 out of our 6 remaining ACC games for Lowe to reach 7 wins in his 4th season.

sid table 3

And since I’m piling on Lowe’s coaching record, with a record of 79-228 (.257) for the Timberwolves and Grizzlies he also has the lowest winning percentage in the history of the NBA of anyone who coached at least 300 games. The only other 2 coaches that coached 300 games and have a winning percentage below .300 are Tim Floyd (post-Jordan/Phil Jackson Chicago Bulls) and Ron Rothstein (expansion Miami Heat).

While comparisons across eras are not always appropriate or accurate, Sidney Lowe has the 2nd worst career conference record of any coach that has coached at NC State (and the worst record since the inception of the Southern Conference in the early 1920s). Lowe also has the lowest conference winning percentage in his first 4 years of any coach in the ACC and in the 100 year history of NC State basketball. And right now, history is all we have to brag about.

By the numbers, Bob Wade would be an improvement.

I have watched Cothron play in person. He does have broad shoulders but is skinny and does not attempt to hustle except when he has the ball in his hands. He has a nice shot. If Howell is in shape there is no way that Luke would come close to starting over Howell. However on our team who knows. The best point guard on the team does not even play that position even though we are in dire need of one.

Let’s start offering alternatives. If we call for Sids head, then what is our alternative? Who wants our job? Our job is not real attractive; alot of guys say “we won titles, we have history,” but fail to realize we FIRED our last great coach and no one has met the standards in the 20+ years since. There is no upside to our job; if you lose you are banished from coaching and if you win(like Herb) it is never enough unless you come home with titles. Our fans want a program like we had in 1973 and it is NOT going to happen in the current basketball environment. So, what is our alternative? Bob Knight, Nolan Richardson, Bobby Cremins…these old guys aren’t coming to State to rebuild. Jay Wright…Nova is a better job right now. We wanted Billy Gilly before Sid was hired…well, he’s a drunk. I had a NC State fan tell me he couldn’t believe Calipari left Memphis for Kentucky when he had just turned down NC State a year before. As fans, we need to grasp where our program is at. We have been irrelevant for 25 years; longer than any of our team has even been alive. Yet, our fans expect these kids to grasp the history of NC state. We are finally starting to get recruits to buy in, but it takes time to rebuild. If YOU were a top recruit 3 years ago would YOU really consider NC State over schools like UNC/Duke/Wake with(at the time) stable top 25 squads? of course not. Why would we expect a top recruit to do any different? Now, if we are “happy” with just solid “in game” coaching and doing enough to get in NCAA tourneys most years, then why were we not happy with Herb? Because his ceiling was the sweet 16 and he ran the Princeton offense. Sid has a difficult job; he has to recruit/sell kids who can win titles to a program that has been irrelevant for their entire life. He is starting to do that; it just takes time to rebuild to a top level program. You can rebuild to “mediocre” pretty quick, but if we were satisfied with “mediocre” we should have embraced Herb.

Hold on. I was at State in 1974. I was in Raleigh in 1983. Both times were great. Your statistics are correct. We have not had the players since 1983 and even ROY can’t coach with average players. These comments about Sidney at a critical time of recruiting can only hurt us.
We have two big time players coming. We have a chance to get two more IF we keep the comments positive about Sidney. So, if you want a national championship, quit telling us how bad Sidney is and look at his ability as a recruiter. We don’t have McDonald’s AA’s falling off the end of the bench like some of our competitors, so Coaching at N C State has always been difficult. We have a good nucleus of players with a good attitude and I think we lost 5 games this year by 3 points or less. I am an N. C. State Fan and I think ALL N.C. State fans need to rally behind Sidney. Just maybe with some POSITIVE support, we can all be looking at better recruting and better basketball in the near future.

^ yea I agree. Need some positive support. Sid is going after big fish, which takes time to establish; particularly when all of NCSU’s “big fish” of the last 20 years have gone on to do absolutly nothing(see Hodge/Wilkins/Costner/Scooter as our McD’s who did nothing…though Jules is in Australia?). Also, people so critical of Sid need to look at ALL of our coaches sans Sloan/Case. Jimmy V was significantly under .500 in the ACC over his 1st 4 years…and he WON a title…and he had MUCH better talent. Much, Much, Much better. I don’t want to give Sid a complete pass, but we can’t compare Costner/Fells/mcCauley to the cast of Thurl Bailey/Whittenburg/Charles/Lowe that Jimmy V had over his 1st 4 years…and he was under .500. Sans the 1983 miracle, Jimmy V didn’t start having real sustained success until his 5th year-end.

How about we start supporting Sid when he starts supporting his players? The results speak for themselves. If we had an AD with any balls Sid would have gone at mid season. You can’t defend these numbers and no incomming recruits will fix the bench problems. I am convinced that with 5 five star recruits we would still suck. Time to pull the plug – this program has been on life support for 4 years. Enough already.
