Pack Pounds Blue Devils 88-74

NC State delivered 40 full minutes of basketball feeding off the energy of the rowdy RBC crowd and an elevated defensive intensity that included a rare full court press to keep seventh-ranked Duke at arms length and finish with a resounding 88-74 upset.

While much praise will deservedly be directed on Tracy Smith’s and Dennis Horner’s fantastic performances; please do not underestimate the importance of Farnold Degand’s decision making and offensive production in the first half followed by Javi Gonzalez and Scott Wood’s contributions in the backcourt in the second half.

For the night, Smith was 10 of 11 from the field for 23 points and 5 rebounds. Horner hit clutch shots in the second half finishing with 20 on the night on 8 of 15 shooting from the field and 3 of 5 from the free throw line.

State was able to keep the Blue Devils at bay by converting 73% from the free throw line, shooting 19 of 26. Despite Duke playing from behind and having to intentionally foul State late in the game, it will surprise nobody who watches basketball that the Blue Devils still attempted seven MORE free throws than the Wolfpack despite State’s home court advantage (shooting 25 of 33).

Tonight’s victory was the Wolfpack’s second over a team ranked in the Top 25 after knocking off Florida State last week. State lost to Top 15 Clemson by only three points this weekend.

The confidence and credibility created by tonight’s win will serve the Wolfpack well in the ACC schedule, especially with the UNC-CH Tarheels coming to Raleigh next Tuesday night.

NC State Basketball Coach, Sidney Lowe turns 50 years old tomorrow and the Wolfpack’s Tracy Smith celebrated a birthday TODAY.

I thought there was absolutely no way we were going to win this game. When Javi hit that three to go back up 11 though, I thought…well **** we are going to win.

The game plan was fantastic. K helped us too though. He gambled on sticking guys on Wood at the expense of not doubling Tracy…and he lost. Plus it freed up others, especially Horner. Degand/Mays/Gonzalez had good games as well.

What was really impressive to me was how the team came out from halftime and punched Duke right in the mouth to go up by double digits. The pressing D was great and you could tell Duke really wasn’t expecting it.

What else can be said. A great day for this program. That makes two wins over Duke in the past four years. The prior decade we only had three. Something tells me we will be surpassing that number soon.

Way to go Pack!!!! Like everyone else I was expecting a let down (36 years as a Pack fan) but alas it didn’t come and I love it!!! Sidney has to keep the guys focused on what’s ahead and let’s go beat the Heels!!! Just can’t say how proud I am of these guys, absolutely NO QUIT and even more importantly they believe that they can win and play like it everynight (with one glaring exception) GO WOLFPACK!!

Watching the game you could see that we had great ball movement and everyone was creating for everyone else. This team worked together and played together. The box score backs this up as we had 18 assists…Any time a team has 18 assists on 32 fgs they are helping each other get easy baskets and that leads to W’s

Everett Case is smiling somewhere tonight. So is V.

they also fought through would-be droughts. there was a little trouble getting up the floor around the 3 or 4 minute mark… but alas, we prevailed. i think our confident play might be here to stay. that is the type of NC STATE basketball that i grew up watching. i hear all this nonsense about the ACC being down this year.. then tommorrow we’ll hear some more about NCSU upsetting duke to that point. only to discredit a fantastic game, coached and played, by the WOLFPACK. we caused problems for duke the entire game.. and they are very good. probably their best team in ten years, IMO. each time they figured how to adapt to our defense, we hit something else. what a great game. wish i were on hillsborough st..

  6. SouthernWolf 01/21/2010 at 12:20 AM #

“wish i were on hillsborough st” with all due respect right now you do not wish you were on hillsborough street. It looks like it got spit out of an ass grinder. Whole sections of the sidewalk are completely closed down with almost continuous construction going on. If its raining, its a mudhole and if its dry its a dust bowl. You have to continually cross back and forth as you go down the street because of side walk closings…Wait did I say that already?

Sorry for venting but construction at NCSU and especially hillsborough street is not my favorite topic right now…

Amazing, simply amazing…where did this team tonight come from ?? Do you think Sid has them “believing” now? Some stunned dookeys out there and on the bench for sure…I’d love to know what was running thru K’s mind as the second half wound down!

I’ve been telling a lot of my friends, “It’d be great to see our team play 35-40 minutes of solid basketball, not 20-25.” Well, I think this was our first showing of that– there weren’t droughts on offense or serious lapses on defense. Glad to see Javi stepped his game back up– as well as Mays has been playing, we really need Javi playing well if we even was to sniff at post-season play. Our rotation has gotten smaller and more effective, with Howell and Vanderberg giving great minutes.

I want Lowe to prove me wrong– I gave up on him after the UVA loss. Go out and beat UMD. Prove that this isn’t a fluke and this team can really play.

I really want to see us string some impressive wins together.

We have a winning record against the big 4 for the decade!

It’s called PROGRESS. Not unlike what our basketball team is showing.

Fantastic game all-around by the Pack!

The best thing to me about watching this was that Duke didn’t give us the game. They didn’t play terribly, they didn’t miss bunches of open shots. We just flat-out outplayed them. We did a great defensive job on their top two guys (big props to Wood for his defense on Singler, which I thought was outstanding), and we executed on offense. The best performance I’ve seen from this team in years. I think you have to go back to the win over UNC from Sidney’s first year to find a comparable performance.

  14. theghost 01/21/2010 at 1:00 AM #

didn’t think we had much chance here… I love admitting I was wrong. Guard play was solid (14 assts/3 TOs!), ball control was the difference, and the refs called a fairly even, if still spotty, game. WE actually overwhelmed duke with OUR pressure.

Meanwhile, in Orange County… holes at the bottom of the conference, coming to raleigh on a 3-game skid – I love it. Actually sets up nicely for them… which would make beating their a$$ that much sweeter. Four or five more losses, and they may drop out of the top 25. What a day.

  15. ncsu05mit10 01/21/2010 at 1:00 AM #

^^^ I agree with you there– this Duke team didn’t play that poorly. The UNC win 3 years ago has a bit of an asterisk, b/c if I remember correctly, Ty Lawson was injured and Quinton Thomas got the start and quickly produced turnovers. Not that I’m trying to take anything away from that win (I was there and loved every minute of it) but I think this win was the first real complete game, where we can maybe deduce what types of teams Sid wants to put on the court every night. There was no fluke about this win– I just want it to carry through the rest of the season.

  16. JeremyH 01/21/2010 at 1:04 AM #

i agree, best win since Sid’s first season.

  17. wolfpackattack89 01/21/2010 at 1:09 AM #

It felt so good to rush that court, so good.

  18. theghost 01/21/2010 at 1:13 AM #

OK, I’m not going to talk about our postseason, but can’t help this… holes at 12-7, how many do they need to lose to get knocked out of the dance? 20-11 would leave anybody else out, probably gets them a 7 seed. I’m thinking 18-13 = on the bubble, 17-14 = NIT. Can they lose 7 more? 2 to Duke, at least 1 to State, then need 4 more from NCSU, @VT, @MD, @GT, @Wake, uva, fsu, miami… dare to dream for the CBI???

  19. dsgill87 01/21/2010 at 1:33 AM #

Tarheels at 18-13 will get in as 8,9,10 seed. They will make the tournament, but it would be so sweet if they didn’t. Like I said earlier, I’m really interested in the Vegas spread for that game. My guess is Carolina -1 or a pick.

It’s almost worth an article: The N-C-State, N-C-State chant finally got started at the end of the game. We’ve been wanting that on here for AWHILE.

    Also, via TWW:

“we rushed the Chancellor’s House and got him to turn the lights on. There were like 500 ppl in his front yard. But then the po ran us out. EPIC though. All we needed was for him to come out on his 2nd floor balcony in his nightie like the pope and proclaim Duke was shite. Then red smoke out of the State College stack would be rockin’.”

My 7yr old son ran around with a home made fake beard screaming “im Tracy Smith”. This win takes me back to the glory days where we always gave Dook and that other blue team a run for thier money. Btw there were alot of unx hats on clearance in walmart. The baby blue lost another 1000 fans after being shown the wood shed by wf.

  24. SMD 01/21/2010 at 4:17 AM #

I guess that no one else will be the wet blanket, so I need to step up… 🙂

It’s great to beat Duke, but to a certain extent, this was more a case of it simply being “our night.” Think about it – when was the last time you saw so many of our guys having great nights the same night? Horner and Javi, et al are just as capable of laying an egg in a few days.

I will say that it’s nice to know this team has the *capability*, to go out on a given night and turn in such a performance. That is progress in and of itself.

But unless this win serves as the catalyst for more wins – which we won’t know for a few weeks – it is little more than David getting in a lucky shot on Goliath. I’ll be shocked if it translates into a win next Tuesday.

  25. FunPack 01/21/2010 at 4:25 AM #

Just an awesome win. It has been years since I screamed at my TV & jumped up and down like today. Almost couldn’t believe what I was seeing. And as much as I enjoyed the happiness of the fans and players, I may have enjoyed that sour look on K’s face even more.

Congrats to Coach Lowe and all the members of the team. Glad that all their hard work has paid off with a big win. And I hope they can keep putting it together, keep getting better, and keep on winning games. 🙂
