NC State welcomes Virginia for ACC home opener

I know this is only the second game of the conference schedule for the Wolfpack and the first contest in the RBC Center, but Saturday’s game against the Cavaliers is a must-win. I hate to put that sort of pressure on the second ACC game, but it’s the truth. For the Wolfpack to have any shot at postseason play, whether it be in the NCAAT, NIT or elsewhere, it is going to have to win the games at home that it should. Saturday’s game meets those qualifications, probably as much or more than any other home conference game the entire year.

Virginia comes to town sporting a new coach and an improved lineup over last season, IMO.

Sylven Landesberg, who is averaging more than 16 points per game so far, is the clear leader on offense for Virginia. In the only matchup between the two teams last season Landesberg made his presence known, scoring 16 points, grabbing eight boards and dishing out six assists. The Wolfpack will need to keep Landesberg out of the lane where he can create shots for both himself and his teammates, most notably big man Mike Scott. The 6’8″ junior is averaging nearly 14 points a game and is shooting nearly 60% from the field. For a more comprehensive look at Virginia from a statistical outlook, check out Backing the Pack.

Now, about this whole must-win thing. The reason this game is so important is not necessarily because of wins and losses or what kind of a whole a loss would put NC State in the ACC standings. It’s important from a confidence standpoint. There has been a lot of back and forth on the forums lately about relative measures of improvement. Confidence is certainly one of those. I realize that for some all that matters is wins and losses. If NC State isn’t competing for the ACC year in year out, it doesn’t matter how confident the team is or how hard it plays. I tend to fall on the other side of the argument.

A win against the Hoos Saturday, especially if it’s done in convincing fashion (a win of more than 10 points), would be a big boost heading into a brutal stretch of games during the next three weeks. Before State’s meeting with Bull City rival NCCU Jan. 31, the Wolfpack will face four ranked teams and Maryland on the road, which is never pleasant.

Another thing to watch Saturday will be the play of Javi Gonzalez. He didn’t have his best night against Holy Cross and it showed by the amount of minutes Julius Mays and Farnold Degand got. Being the Julius Mays hater that I am (when he’s playing PG), I hope Javi can get squared away and continue the solid play he’s shown through much of the season. If Mays can keep shooting well and play some at the two and Farnold and Javi keep pushing the tempo and limiting turnovers, the backcourt could go from one of those things you watch between the cracks in your fingers to something actually worthy of a round of applause.

I’ll be in attendance tomorrow during the game and be updating via Twitter and potentially the forums, depending on how good the 3G reception is in the RBC Center. Also, if you haven’t checked out the SFN FanPage on Facebook, you should probably go ahead and do that.

I never thought I would be saying this, but Farnold Degand is the key to our ACC season. We simply do not have a guard other than him who can actually penetrate a defense and beat a full court press. When he drove into the defense against UF and dished off the ball, it almost brought a tear to my eye as I haven’t seen that since Tony Bethel was healthy. I completely agree with another post that Javi or Degand (preferably both) have to be out on the court at all times. We simply cannot have Mays and CJ Williams in the backcourt at the same time, not if we want to win. For all the “what ifs” thrown out after we’ve lost two very close games, here’s one for you: what if Lo Brown had qualified for this year? I know from a marketing standpoint having him come in with Harrow is a plus, but Degand looks like a poor man’s Lo Brown, what if we had the real thing this year. Go Pack today!

This team would be a middle of the road team with Lo Brown on the squad this year.

I agree that the PR blitz with Harrow and Brown will be better, but it would have been nice to have him qualify for this season.

Degand is an absolutely destitute, poverty-stricken man’s Cliff Crawford.

Julius Mays is a Rwandan dirt farmer’s Curtis Marshall.

Sid has to start making this happen NOW. I really like the guy. Hell, I was there on the Brickyard in ’83 rooting him and the Cardiac Pack on, but he has to move the needle!

A minimum of six wins in the ACC is a must, and it starts with UVA. If he achieves that, whether he dances or not, I will support him. WTNY is not a strategy that I can stomach any more.

I agree that Javi and Degand are the key. If we get coherent guard play during the next two months, Sid will get his six.

    SID! Get your six!

There are five games at home that are must-wins.

    Virginia
    Virginia Tech
    Maryland
    Wake Forest
    Boston College

Most of those games are later in the season when some of these teams could be ranked, but I don’t care. Those teams, maybe save WF, are not top tier teams in the ACC and are teams NC State should beat at home.

    Here’s the remaining home games:

    Clemson
    Duke
    UNC

The road games are a complete toss up. Any win you can get on the road is gravy IMO.

If Degand is a destitute man’s Cliff Crawford, then I guess Mays must be a poor man’s Scooter Sherrill.

I’m not as worried about the ACC home games as I am the road games. We can win some at home, including today, but how about on the road? When we’ve finished the road stretch of FSU, Maryland, UVA and Georgia Tech, we’ll know a lot more about this team than we’ll know after today.

The only reason we need this one so bad is because we’re defending home court against the ACC’s weakest team right now. If we don’t shoot well, it won’t be easy.

  7. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 12:16 PM #

Scooter Sherill could dunk the ball. I’m not sure Mays can reach the net.

I just got in and find that G-Moron is doing our game. I may have to go back to my car and listen to the UVA radio guys.

  10. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 1:17 PM #

The Scott kid has a NBA body.

  11. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 1:22 PM #

CJ Williams has to have the worst production per minute ratio of any player in ACC history.

  12. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 1:27 PM #

    Williams is horrible.

  13. Rick 01/09/2010 at 1:29 PM #

How have we been playing os far?
Glad to see the refs not fall for that flop

  14. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 1:36 PM #

You get Williams out and suddenly our offense kicks it up a gear. Must be the difference in playing with 5 guys instead of 4.

  15. Rochester 01/09/2010 at 1:50 PM #

You have to appreciate Virginia not pressing when Mays is handling the ball. If they’re going to leave him be he’s not such a negative for us. At least he can nail his free throws.

Vandenberg looks good. I think he’s going to give us four pretty good years. I could see him being a real asset his junior and senior years. He’s already better than most of the backup centers we’ve had over the past decade.

  16. VaWolf82 01/09/2010 at 1:59 PM #

State’s offense looks really ugly right now.

  17. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 2:01 PM #

    Va,

That’s because Williams is on the floor. He offers nothing whatsoever. He may be worse than Marquis Johnson which is a remarkable statement.

  18. Pack Leader 01/09/2010 at 2:21 PM #

    11-21 Free throws.

  19. MrPlywood 01/09/2010 at 2:21 PM #

This team should spend entire days shooting free throws.

  20. Rochester 01/09/2010 at 2:22 PM #

Why even bother getting fouled? If we feel a defender on us we’d have better odds passing out for a half-court shot. 11-for-21 from the line is going to cost us.

  21. Rochester 01/09/2010 at 2:27 PM #

We have no one who can guard a potent 2/3. We now have Howell and Horner guarding Landesberg because no one else could stop him. That messes up the rest of our defense. This game has gotten too close because of that and our crappy free throw shooting.

  22. MrPlywood 01/09/2010 at 2:33 PM #

Rochester, I was just thinking the same thing. Might as well kick it out for a three.

  23. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 2:33 PM #

Stupid ass substitution patterns are going to lose this game. We should have a seven player rotation:

    Gonzalez
    Degand
    Wood
    Horner
    Smith

With Vandenberg and Howell off the bench. Gonzalez and Degand must play 40 mpg.

    Yes, I am serious.

  24. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 2:36 PM #

    This is terrible coaching, friends.

  25. VaWolf82 01/09/2010 at 2:37 PM #

Don’t worry. I’ve been assured many times that State is much improved over last year.
