Wolfpack loses on buzzer beater, 74-76

Alternative Title #1: Do you think Tracy Smith is worth one basket?

Alternative Title #2: Is there some rule against blowing the whistle in favor of NC State in the last five minutes of a ball game?

Final Score
Arizona 76
NC State 74

Free Throw Attempts
Arizona 27
NC State 10

This one really stung. State showed a lot of heart and determination by fighting back and making a game of it after trailing by as much as ten points. Javi Gonzalez deserves a ton of credit for leading the charge.

NC State led 61-60 with 3:43 in the game and couldn’t find a way to score for the next three minutes which ultimately led to a 69-61 Arizona advantage before Julius Mays hit a three pointed with 37.5 seconds remaining to bring the Pack within four points. State ultimately scored an impressive thirteen points in the last 37.5 seconds of the game.

If anyone has this game on DVR, do me the favor of going back and telling me how many calls went NC State’s way in the last 6 to 8 minutes of the game? I’m not kidding. It was like there was only one team on the court. For example:

  • On the important sequence where Javi Gonzalez was called for a five second violation the official closest to Gonzalez was literally making the separation signal with his arms signalling a re-set of the five second count when another official blew the whistle.
• Jordan Vandenberg’s fourth foul was called by – you guessed it – Karl Hess from twenty feet behind the play as the official closest to the play under the basket didn’t call anything (since there was no contact and there should of have been no call).
• Dennis Horner was called for a bullshit ‘charge’ by – you guessed it – Karl Hess on an offensive rebound and a key put back when Arizona’s POINT GUARD took an obvious flop. Did Horner really need to lean into Nic Wise to gain an advantage? Whenever I see bullshit like that I ask myself one question that serves to just infuriate me more — would Tyler Hansbrough have been whistled for that exact same call if he were in that position?
• Javi finally got to the free throw line with less than a minute to go on a foul called on a drive for an old fashioned three point play. Problem is that he got fouled on three consecutive drives and was able to muster getting but one call.
• In fact, on the last drive of the game that tied the game, Gonzalez was hacked by Nic Wise who was playing with his fourth foul. No call. If the call is made, at the very least Wise is out of the game and we have time to set our defense after Javi’s free throw…which, if he makes would put us up one. Of course, there is no call.

Quick observations:

* Arizona really needs to find someone competent (or unbiased) to run their clock. After what happened the other night one would think they would be focused on accuracy. After Nic Wise’s game winning shot the clock ran down to 0.9 seconds before NC State in-bounded the ball. There should have been approximately 1.6 seconds on the clock after that basket. Since State didn’t call a time out to set up a play it didn’t make much of a difference. But, it could have been a big deal.

* How the @*#) does Sidney Lowe not have a more definted rotation by this point in the season. Seriously. The perpetual substituting is mind numbing. This is not the NBA. If you are going to play that many kids for that many different minutes then you need to be pressing and playing 94 feet of tough defense.

* Similar to the Marquette game – the Wolfpack found a way to drastically reduce turnovers after a horrible first 15 minutes with the basketball.

* Dis-similar to the Marquette game – the key to this turnaroud was not Farnold Degand who was either injured or relegated to the dog house again as he was not given much opportunity to play despite Javi Gonzalez’s struggles in the first half. Does CJ Williams really provide that much more than Degand gives you? I’m not pushing Degand over CJ; just asking the question since one of our biggest weaknesses is Javi & Julius’ inability to stop penetration from opposing point guards.

* One player that is not ready to log the number of minutes that he is getting is DeShawn Painter.

* One player that is clearly ready to play is Jordan Vandenberg. Vandenberg is a huge difference maker for the Wolfpack at the defensive end of the court where we are particularly weak as our guards have a very hard time slowing/stopping dribble penetration.

* Richard Howell made nice contributions tonight. It is nice to see him find his footing. Which makes me wonder why we didn’t see a little more of him near the end of the game.

* Dennis Horner didn’t give us anything tonight. Horner was only 3 for 11 tonight. Which speaks to the strong collective effort that the rest of the team turned in.

Some folks on our message boards were really down on Sidney Lowe during the conversations about this game and I must say I’m a little confused. I don’t know many people in their right mind who expected to win a game on the road on the west coast at 10:30 pm EST that ended on Christmas Eve without our best player.

Sure some things could have been different. But, I actually give the coaches and the players a lot of credit for almost pulling that out.

I readily acknowledge there are a lot of arguments against Sidney’s coaching abilities; but I don’t think I would hang my hat on this performance to make that point.

———————————————————————————————–

At the same time that I was logging this entry tobaccordshow was logging his own. We’ve merged that one over to hear for convenience:

Tied at 61 with 3:06 to play… I could feel the collapse beginning. Painter body checks Nick Wise for a blocking foul. A 96% free throw shooter, Nick Wise converts the first half. 62 – 61. As fate would have it, Wise misses the back end, but Vandenberg is called on a lane violation… And what does the Arizona senior do next? Of course he hits nothing but the net. 63 – 61.

On the ensuing possession, our senior, Dennis Horner, gets a chance at a wide open three and bricks hard off the back of the rim.

Coming up the floor, Wise gives a quick no look pass to Williams for an easy jam. 65 – 61.

Julius Mays then dribbles around aimlessly until the clock winds down to 8 and passes. He gets the ball right back and heaves a three that doesn’t fall, but Horner is there and quickly goes up while being defended by Wise, who has 4 fouls. Wise falls to the floor and a charge is called. Looking at the replay, Horner does needlessly dip his shoulder. Reminds me of the play against Wake where he gave a quadruple fake while under the basket with not a single Deacon jersey within 50 yards.

1:47 Sean Miller calls a timeout. Dribble penetration (something we can’t seem to do) with 8 on the shot clock and we get lucky as Dennis Horner hauls in a rebound off of a shot that probably should’ve put the game out of reach.

Our next possession sees a quick feed to Horner from Mays and Horner is literally thrown to the floor and not a whistle can be heard. Maybe this is what Tracy Smith was talking about? Horner can’t dip a shoulder but he can be gang mugged by two Arizona players… Meanwhile the announcers call it a “clean block.” Sure.

Now we have to foul. And who do we foul? 96% shooter Nick Wise. Just stay out of the lane please! Converts the front end of the one-and-one. 66 – 61. And he does the same on the back end. 67 – 61.

Horner is again fouled while shooting. No call as Arizona pulls down the rebound. And we foul. 69 – 61. Now it’s officially out of reach with 53.6 to go.

Gonzalez misses a three. Offensive rebound. Mays misses a three. Offensive rebound. Mays finally gets a lucky bounce. The last time we scored was off of a Scott Wood 3-pointer with 3:43 left to play. I’d like to know where our time outs were as not a single one was called in a late game drought… the type that will not be kind in ACC play. 64 – 69.

Full court press. We foul immediately. 70 – 64. Desperation time.

Javi goes coast-to-coast with a layup and-1. 30.4 to play. I’m screaming at the team in the locker room over that foul if I’m Sean Miller. We get lucky. 66 – 70 with Javi going to the line. Javi converts the free throw to make it a one possession game 67 – 70.

Foul with 28.1 to go. But again it’s Nick Wise on the receiving end of the foul. Wise misses the first (his third one of the night) but makes the second. 67 – 71.

Javi tries the coast-to-coast thing again but is blocked pretty fantastically. Redemption though as Javi receives the inbounds pass and hits a HUGE 3. What is this? A one point game?? 70 – 71.

Foul immediately with 18.5 to play. Finally, we foul Soloman Hill, a 76% shooter. Hits the first. 70 – 72. And the second. 70 – 73. A forlorn Tracy Smith looks on helplessly.

Javi again goes coast-to-coast tripping and falling and throwing the ball up. And somehow it goes in. 72 – 73 with 13 seconds to play.

We foul. 1 for 2 on the line. 72 – 74. Coast to coast again? Hah. Yes. This is reminiscent of Mazzone ball. 2 swing passes? How about 1 more on 3rd-and-long. Except Javi again comes up clutch without a single Arizona defender in his way to tie the game. 74 – 74!

But… We get a dose of our own coast-to-coast medicine and despite forcing Arizona to a circus shot, it is Nick Wise who writes the Packs demise… The hard thing to swallow here is that there are 3 Pack defenders around Wise. I know a foul is a tough thing to force here… but still a tough way to lose.

With fractions of a second, Julius Mays heaves a full court shot and almost makes it…

This leaves me with wondering what the coaching staff was doing during our 3:00 drought where we couldn’t buy a shot and when we weren’t shooting, we were giving the ball away. Oh well. Probably should get used to this feeling.

Our community had a lively discussion about tonight’s game. And as always, our readers seem to provide some rather keen analysis:

I think you are right about the team growing up w/o Smith our freshman have played decent and we certainly have not given up

Richard Howell certainly had a coming out game tonight with some very key plays in the second half. Scott Wood and Deshaun Painter also contributed key plays. It’s nice to see some of the new guys playing and performing well in tough situations. With Tracy Smith, who knows how this one falls as we will ride the rest of our few wins on Tracy’s back. Nonetheless, our freshmen were given a shot in Smith’s absence and, for all intents and purposes, they played well.

The officiating was horrible at times. Hey Sid, are you going to suspend me too?

Javi definitely gets the game ball as he single handedly – and sometimes not purposefully – fueled our late game drive.

“Quit” is not a term in this team’s vocabulary. But just because you don’t quit doesn’t mean you still don’t lose. The past two games have shown a very ugly – yet very scrappy Wolfpack team. Perhaps this is a pleasant observation as, coming into this season, I was just expecting ugly.

Lowe went w/ the hot hand – w/ the obvious exception of when it came to Howell late in last night’s game. (And that was a bigger omission in hindsight.)

Lowe definitely has created a problem for himself. Right now, he has 1 player he can be confident will consistently deliver over the course of the game…that guy was out last night. The other 9 or so guys have varying levels of talent. Of those 9 – Javi is the most likely to be a consistent player. Still, when he’s bad, like he was for much of last night – he can play us right out of the game.

Mays simply isn’t aggressive enough much of the time. He shouldn’t have many TO’s, but he’s not going to create consistently w/ his “sideways” approach.

Degand can play both spots. Some games he’s explosive and has a huge positive impact…other games, like last night, he is NO FACTOR.

Then there’s the swingmen of Wood, Davis and CJ…None of whom has shown can consistently produce on the offensive end, nor can they create their own shot. All 3 have their strongpoints – but all 3 have weaknesses too.

Finally, there’s our big men…Howell, Painter and Vandenberg. Of the 3, Howell has the most polished offensive game, but he’s probably in the worst shape. Vandenberg is great defensively, but struggles mightily on offense. Painter stuggles defensively, but can occasionally be effective on the offensive end. There’s a huge upside to this group, but not one of these guys is “ready for primetime.”

What you really have here is a team full of role players. Every team needs role players…but you’ve got to have at least 2 or 3 guys you can count on if you’re going to be a good team…unless you are going to play great defense. And unfortunately for us, our D doesn’t usually kick it into overdrive until after the 1st half.

  2. wolfpackattack89 12/24/2009 at 3:34 PM #

Let’s face it, Arizona is an awful team. That doesn’t bode well for us, even without our best player.

  3. theghost 12/24/2009 at 3:53 PM #

^ and ^^ – both well stated. Losing that game is underperforming. We’re obviously lacking in guard play and scoring threats w/o Tracy, but AZ doesn’t apply enough pressure to really exploit that. I would expect much more composure than we showed. Also, many of Javi’s shots were bad shot selection that somehow dropped – give him credit, but don’t expect those shots to fall normally.

I think you folks that are criticizing “substitution patterns” are talking way over your heads. Unless you’ve been attending practice, it’s fun to talk about, but IMO far-fetched. Lowe was an idiot last year for not playing Mays, now he’s an idiot for playing him. “No discipline” for not benching Fells and Costner, now he’s a moron for benching Smith and Degand. If you don’t know what a player’s been told to do or how the backup plays, how can you criticize? As for Howell – he looked better than in previous games, but he was still slow, looked lost on defense, and took a terrible 3. I was cringing every step of his coast-to-coast drive.

Two reasons we lost – 1) no real scoring threats, and 2) still spotty PG play. I think we’re improved from last year, I think we’ve got good potential to improve, I like how Wood and Howell and Vandy are coming along, but this team will be up and down this year, and will struggle alot with good size and good ball pressure.

Last point – refs were bad, and inconsistent, but I really didn’t think it was particularly to AZ’s advantage. Last few minutes, maybe, but over the whole game, I think it went both ways.

  4. Avid109 12/24/2009 at 4:44 PM #

While disappointed with the loss, I’ve got some hope for this team. As sloppy at the game got at points (especially in the first half), they didn’t give up. While several of the players are quite young, there is no shortage of talent. If (big “if”) Coach Lowe and his staff can get the most out of these guys, we’ll be okay.

  5. wolfmanmat 12/24/2009 at 4:51 PM #

^ Arizona is bad, but losing that game is certainly not underperforming. Our team is not suppossed to win any game, particularly a road game, without Tracy Smith. Heck, we almost lost to Elon with him.

  6. theghost 12/24/2009 at 6:59 PM #

^I’m speaking based on having watched the game, not based on preseason expectations. If we were abused down low, I might be more inclined to agree, but that’s not what did us in. Arizona is not good – weak defense, not very disciplined, lots of mistakes – good outside shot, and that’s about it. What they put on the court, we had the horsepower to beat, with or without Smith.

And the Elon game was also underperforming.

  7. Afterglow 12/24/2009 at 7:14 PM #

Yeah, I’m not hating on Tracy Smith but one thing I’ve noticed is that he tends to be tentative around the basket. It would have been great to have him for this game, it’s just… I’m not completely sold on him… yet. Personally, I think for him to be successful, he needs to get more of a bulldog mentality to go along with his finesse game.

  8. Texpack 12/24/2009 at 7:46 PM #

Chop – My question on the inside rotation last night was regarding Painters minutes in the “4th quarter” if you will. He clearly needs more development than Howell at this point. He wouldn’t be playing in ACC games if I were coaching, unless something changes drastically. Vandenberg is as good as Cozell McQueen was as a freshman when he split time with Chuck Nevitt. He needs to be on the floor a lot more than he has been to this point in the year. They also need to at least pass him the ball on the offensive end of the floor.

My back court rotation going forward would be Javi getting the most minutes, Degand or Mays (depending on who is hot) with Wood, Davis, and CJ splitting time at the 2 and 3.

I’m ok with Sidney’s substitution pattern to date as long as he gets to a 9 or 10 man rotation in time for the conference schedule. I think this team has enough players who can contribute on a given night that you need to play 10 guys in the first half and then shorten your rotation in the second half depending on who’s hot and the match ups.

  9. Rick 12/24/2009 at 9:20 PM #

“People are complaining about the Kendall Smith thing. He didn’t get into the game OVER Degand. He is a power forward, Degand is a SG…totally different positions. Besides that he played like 3 minutes…tops.”

Actually most are wondering why Smith was in when there was Horner, JV, Howell, Painter and JD who could have played. That decision is a true head scratcher.

  10. Anthony Grundy 12/24/2009 at 9:25 PM #

Howell needs to be playing 25+ minutes a game…

  11. Rufftown Wolf 12/24/2009 at 9:56 PM #

If Howell can be consistent he should get some PT. He kind of reminds me of Larry Johnson the way he can handle the ball. Sometimes he gets lost, but time practicing the sets he should be fine. Scott Wood needs to push it a little more when he get defensive rebounds and drive more with ball fakes. I really like this team. We open up the rest of the ACC play w/ UVA, FSU, and Clemson. If these guys can win the first one. It could go a long way. Every game is winnable. Except for the Dukies.

IF nothing else this team is fun to watch.

  12. Ed89 12/25/2009 at 12:16 AM #

Degand should ONLY play if Mays, Javi or CJ need a breather. Then, ONLY. The guy is NOT what is going to win anything for us. He’s the Quinton Thomas of this team. He is truly a head scratcher. Why we offered a red-shirt from Iowa State a scholly, I’ll never know. Does he look like a senior leader to anyone? ANYONE? Anyway, this team has potential. Down 8 points with a little over 30 seconds to play, and we tie it. Yes, we should have stopped Wise on the last play, but can you imagine IF that 3/4 court shot from Mays had gone in?? Anyway, the two players that should see DECREASED amount of time going forward are Horner and Degand. Think about that. Our two seniors. Let the young guys play. They are not only the future of the team, they are the BEST PLAYERS. It was Horner’s turn to step up last night, and he laid an egg. As he did the last game getting his s^&* stuffed by Ish Smith. He’s had a couple of awful games. If he’s starting in February, I’ll be surprised. Play the young guys!!

  13. 61Packer 12/25/2009 at 12:19 AM #

We’ve seen the desert, and now we’re 8-3. Where to from here? Here’s my prediction:

Winthrop, 9-3; at UNCG, 10-3; Florida, 10-4; Holy Cross, 11-4; UVA, 12-4; at FSU 12-5; Clemson 12-6; Duke 12-7; at Maryland 12-8; UNC 12-9; NC Central 13-9; at UVA 14-9; at Georgia Tech 14-10; Virginia Tech 15-10; at UNC 15-11; Maryland 15-12; Wake Forest 16-12; at Miami 16-13; at Virginia Tech 16-14; Boston College 17-14; ACC tourney vs Clemson 17-15; at South Carolina (NIT) 17-16 (5-11 ACC); 4th season under Lowe complete.

Jed and Wolfpack administrators evaluate the 17-15 season and declare it a success. Lowe returns for a 5th season. The new talent takes the Pack to a 7-9 ACC mark, and Lowe returns for a 6th season with a contract extension. This season proves tougher because we don’t have a point guard, our big man is too foul prone, and Carl Hess gets PMS. But Lowe and staff return for season 7, and we once again climb back to near the .500 mark in the ACC. Season 8 promises to be the breakthrough season in the Sidney Lowe era.

    To be continued……………..

  14. fullmoon1 12/25/2009 at 7:25 AM #

The Glass is half full. I do not agree with the idea that we will perpetually have losing seasons under Lowe. It took coach K at least 3 years to put together a decent squad. That sounds like the anylasis of a duke grad turned t.v. announcer or worse yet a “sports journalist” from UNC. This team will surprise and win games they are not supposed to win. If this was fantasy basketball one could crunch the #’s and base an outcome on stats but in real games especially in the ACC, any team can win on a given night. We have all seen the lowly in the conference beat a mighty blue team. We have all seen a bottom team run the tables or damn close to it in the conference tournament.

Tenative? He stuck his nose in there against Wake’s twin towers. He likes contact and lives in the paint. “Finesse game”…are you being sarcastic?

“Actually most are wondering why Smith was in when there was Horner, JV, Howell, Painter and JD who could have played. That decision is a true head scratcher.”

I understand the question on those guys…not Degand though.

“Tenative? He stuck his nose in there against Wake’s twin towers. He likes contact and lives in the paint. “Finesse game”…are you being sarcastic?”

No. It feels like he’s not making shots he should be underneath the basket because he’s not finishing. And yes, I do think he has somewhat of a finesse game. I think once he is able to utilize both he will be a strong player. I can see him being the type of player that is able to throw in a soft baby hook, jump out a little and gently swish it in or get it underneath the basket and slam it home. It’s the latter that I think he should improve upon. I think some of this has to do with things opening up underneath once our perimeter guys start knocking it down. As far as him going up against Wakes twin towers… I have observed this in other games against less formidable opponents.

Afterglow…dude…you have to be talking about someone else. You couldn’t be more wrong.

“As far as him going up against Wakes twin towers… I have observed this in other games against less formidable opponents.”

Well he has been even more effective in those games.

“It feels like he’s not making shots he should be underneath the basket because he’s not finishing.”

Even getting double and triple teamed he is in the top 10 in field goal percentage. That’s after going up against the pair of 7 footers. What? You want him to NEVER miss a shot?

“I can see him being the type of player that is able to throw in a soft baby hook, jump out a little and gently swish it in or get it underneath the basket and slam it home.”

He does much more of the latter. And when he does throw in a soft baby hook it usually after a strong post move, or banging a guy in the chest twice and pushing him under the rim. You can be a big strong guy, but you have to have a soft touch around the rim.

Tracy needs to improve on his finesse game. He needs a turn around jumper, he needs a 15 foot jump shot. The guy you are describing is not Tracy Smith. I don’t know who you are describing, frankly.

  20. rtpack24 12/25/2009 at 2:51 PM #

I posted before this game that I thought the Aussie and Degand need more minutes. Do not know why Degand sat most of the game because everyone else is subed in every 30 seconds. I do not remember a team other than old Pitino Ky teams that subs as much as we do. When we have Painter and Davis in the game then there are 5 guarding 3 when we are on offense. We have trouble scoring and Howell was obiviously in a grove yet Lowe sits him down the srretch. Also, 5 minutes into game Az kneww our pick and roll play better than we did. They need more motion and less isolation on offense, this is not the NBA.

yeah, all the conversation for the last several years (probably more than a decade) now is “yeah eventually maybe not this year but next, things will get turned around” via any statistcs/reasons/justifications under the sun.
the reality is; there is no palpable or solid evidence to believe that. its really sad that the only realistic sentiment is “yeah, maybe we`ll have a winning ACC record in a year or two”….just sad, but realistic. it truely is, what it is….

  22. VaWolf82 12/25/2009 at 9:16 PM #

I’ve got some hope for this team.

I’ve seen nothing that gives me hope for playing against teams in the ACC.

“The Glass is half full. I do not agree with the idea that we will perpetually have losing seasons under Lowe. It took coach K at least 3 years to put together a decent squad.”

This is the equivalent of the AD releasing an “I support the coach” statement.
It is used when there is no other logical support for a coach.

  24. 61Packer 12/26/2009 at 9:48 AM #

Coach K was putting together a program in his first 3 years at Duke.

This coaching staff at State doesn’t know the meaning of the word, let alone how to do it.

  25. PackerInRussia 12/26/2009 at 5:32 PM #

Vandenberg was great. Surprised to only see 3 blocks in the stats. Thought there were a lot more. His presence certainly alters things under the basket.
