Wolfpack advance to 9-3 riding strong 3-point shooting

It wasn’t very pretty after the NC State jumped out to an impressive 32-9 lead with 8:23 in the first half, but the Wolfpack managed to advance to 9-3 with a 68-52 win over Winthrop at the RBC Center.

The Pack found range again from the three-point line shooting 10 of 20 for the night from the arc; and a total of 52% from the field overall.

GoPack.com has a nice, quick game story that can be viewed here.

A balanced scoring attack – and a five-minute scoring spurt in the first half – allowed NC State to cruise by Winthrop Tuesday night, 68-52, at the RBC Center.

During the game’s most decisive streak, the Wolfpack outscored the Eagles 30-7, with most of the damage coming from the 3-point line.

Freshman Scott Wood started the streak by hitting a 3-pointer from the corner, and Tracy Smith followed with a traditional three-point play. Sophomore C.J. Williams and Wood hit back-to-back 3-pointers, to push State’s lead to 13-3, and Smith followed his own miss with a dunk.

Three players – one by Wood, two by senior Farnold Degand and two by senior Dennis Horner – hit 3-pointers on five consecutive possessions, increasing the lead to 21 points. And freshman Jordan Vandenberg hit a crowd pleasing left-handed hook shot with 8:23 remaining in the first half to give the Wolfpack its biggest lead of the night, 32-9.

[snip]

It was as good a half as Sidney Lowe’s team has played all year. Not only did the Pack make 15 of 30 field goals and 8 of 14 3-point attempts, it also dished out 13 assists on 15 field goals.

One observation I have is related to turnovers – while State committed 14 for the evening, the Wolfpack was only able to generate 7 turnovers from Winthrop. This differential coupled with State’s solid field goal shooting (limiting the need and opportunity for offensive rebounds) provided Winthrop ten more shot attempts than State generated for the evening.

Make no doubt about it, the Wolfpack is going to lose at least one game this year because of free throw shooting. Tonight, State shot an embarrassing 6 of 15 for only 40% from the free throw line.

State now turns its sites to three non-conference games in a six day span. After a New Year’s Eve game vs UNC Greensboro at the Greensboro Coliseum, State plays host to Florida in the RBC on Sunday at 3pm in what has become a very important game that could have post-season implications when March arrives.

If one were to presume wins over UNC-G, Holy Cross on (Jan 6) and North Carolina Central (Jan 30th) then the Pack would be 12-3 (not including the Florida result) before launching into the main part of the ACC schedule with another ‘must win’ hosting very beatable Virginia on Saturday, Jan 9th at noon. At the end of the year, 18 wins could be enough to earn an NIT berth; and non-conference wins over both Marquette and Florida could be differentiating factors for the Wolfpack.

What is it going to take for this university, with an enrollment of 32,000, to find one goddamned shooter who can put the ball in the basket at a >48% clip? We haven’t had a shooting guard since Rod Monroe, who graduated 18 years ago.

You said the “trend”. The trend is gradual improvement as I outlined with numbers. That trend in the last 6 games includes both Marquette and Arizona which we did score in the mid 70’s and are two of the 4 serious competitors we’ve had this season.

BTW, did I forget to metion that our best two scorng halfs have been in the last 2 games? 51 in the 2nd against Arizona* (*without our leading scorer) and Winthrop 41pts in the 1st. Just supports my “trend” idea.

Now that being said we certainly could use more offense but given the “trend” we may be able to continue to improve as our younger players mature and with the return of Degand.

Just giving you some “stuff” 13.LOL

Another questionable move. Sid plays walk on Kendall Smith in the closing minutes of the Arizona game, arguably one of the biggest non-conference games we’ve played in a long time. And, we were down when he put Smith in. And now, with Winthrop, SMith sees no time. I DO NOT GET IT!

Interesting arguments on both sides, and the non-emotional ones are mostly right – on both sides. We ARE inconsistent – we are really, really young and have to play the young guys because we only have 2-3 ACC caliber experienced players. However, at the same time we ARE improving. We are shooting better, more people are hitting shots, more guys are getting into the offense.
We ARE going to struggle to score against the league. When TS is doubled or tripled or we see zone – one or both of which will happen most nights – we don’t show enough offensive movement to generate offense, so we end up with either Javi trying to create, forcing it inside, or a bad shot. And we are going to lose a lot of games because of the turnovers that creates, and the bad shots. That is reality but should improve with better guard play next year.
I think Sid’s rotation is okay, the starting lineup is set, he’s just trying to get as much game time for his second tier players as possible. That’s a good thing, we need them comfortable in the game. Tracey is going to have foul trouble a lot this year, so JV, Howell and Painter need to help. Howell’s our highest rated recruit, I think he’ll keep improving. It was a little worrisome in post-game when he said he had been “injuried.” Hopefully just nerves. During warm-ups I watched JV shooting that left handed hook over and over. If he can get that going both ways, it will be a tough shot to stop. But this year the stars will have to be aligned perfectly (ideal position, light defense) for him to use it. But it is good to see him working on moves.

For the last few months the calmer voices have said, what we need this year is reason to be optimistic for the future. We shouldn’t expect the NCAAT or the NIT. I agree with that. Maybe we’ll pull a surprise or two if we have a freaky outside shooting night, but we’re going to lose most of the league games. Let’s see Sid coach better, let’s see these freshmen show us something to build on. That’s how I hope we can summarize the season in three months.

^^Kendall Smith played the last 2 minutes of the first half of the Arizona game- not the end of the game. He played because the other big guys were in foul trouble. In other words, an emergency situation.

  6. GoldenChain 12/30/2009 at 2:24 PM #

Thanks jb, with the way we played in that 1st half we probably could have gone with 4 men the last 2 minutes and still not have noticed any difference.

Can you tell us the trend of the ACC record of the last three teams?

  8. Rick 12/30/2009 at 2:35 PM #

“Kendall Smith played the last 2 minutes of the first half of the Arizona game- not the end of the game. He played because the other big guys were in foul trouble. In other words, an emergency situation.”

So you are saying that Horner, Howell, Painter, JV and Davis were all in foul trouble because any of them should have played before a walk on.

  9. jbpackfan 12/30/2009 at 2:55 PM #

Do you really think Lowe played Smith because he thought he would produce above the level of those guys? Get serious people. Horner had 2, JV had 2 and Painter had 2. I want to say Howell and Smith finished the half. There have been a lot of examples of strange substitution patterns over the past 4 years, but to make an issue out of Kendall Smith playing is retarded.

  10. Pack Mentality 12/30/2009 at 3:35 PM #

Good job to the team, but the Pack is 0-1 in the 16 game season that really matters. I don’t care at all about making any postseason except the NCAA. We all know .500 in ACC play is the magic number for being relevant to the NCAA or not. NIT means a failed season.

  11. GoldenChain 12/30/2009 at 3:51 PM #

Rick, my discussion of the trend of our scoring was in direct response to 13’s characterization of our scoring 12 games into the season. I’ll try to remember to answer you when we’ve played 3 ACC games but I’ll take a wild stab and say it will be UP based on our 59pt outting against Wake.

  12. choppack1 12/30/2009 at 4:34 PM #

“We all know .500 in ACC play is the magic number for being relevant to the NCAA or not.”

Actually – it doesn’t. We really need to beat UF and hold serve against the rest of the cupcakes to have a good shot an NCAA bid w/ an ACC record.

If we lose to Florida, we have to go at the very least 9-7 in the conference and probably have to win at least one ACC Tourney game to get in.

If we beat Florida, go 8-8 and beat the cupcakes, we probably still need to win one tournament game.

I wouldn’t say the NIT would mean a failed season. It would either provide Sid a chance to make a run and a final four in NY. Along with solid recruiting and signs of improvement Sid would be able to argue for one more season. Or, Sid is let go and State is a far more attractive team to potential coaches with young talent that made it to the NIT with young talent that can improve.

My guess is that there won’t be a basketball coaching change until after a new AD is in place and that doesn’t seem likely until a new Chancellor arrives sometime during the second half of 2010.

I would think a the new Chancellor will have to make some significant administration changes during his or her first six months. After the football season I would think Lee’s review would begin. Based on the Football and State’s Nov-Dec basketball Lee will be kept or let go. This would allow for a new AD to make a call by the end of March of 2011 on Sid.

Pure speculation on my part but I don’t see any major changes in athletics until a new Chancellor is in place. I would think this would be a major recruiting tool for a new leader at NC State. Wouldn’t make much sense to let the out going leadership set the direction for athletics over the next 10 years. These major new hires (or not) could help build a career for the new person.

  14. howlie 12/30/2009 at 5:04 PM #

    This quote from the article,
“Florida in the RBC … has become a very important game that could have post-season implications when March arrives”

is probably accurate, but I just have a hard time taking it seriously. As a Wolfpackaphile, I am just plain ignorant of other teams. Maybe 65% of other teams now play exlusively frosh & sophs–and if so–we have chance to do something besides be humiliated in the postseason–IF we get there.

For me, I think the obvious ‘hope’ for us is to see if we can pull off a few more ‘Marquettes’ vs. [especially] a few of the better conference teams, and MAYBE to surprise a team or two in the ACC Tourney.
But a team as young as ours is going to have as many [or more] disaster games as upsets.

  15. TheWolf 12/30/2009 at 5:19 PM #

We were projected to finish last. The team that Sid has put on the floor WILL NOT FINISH LAST. There are reasons to be excited about Wolfpack basketball for the first time in a long, long time. This year may end with an NIT berth, but that is okay. Look forward at what we are bringing in. I want our team to win more than anyone, but lets be realistic. The negativity from some of you (Rick, Basspacker) is rediculous. Sometimes I think some of you don’t even see the games. I played college basketball (which is more than most of you) and I don’t understand the ignorance of some of you. Do you think that you know better than someone who has coached in the NBA? Do you think that NBA franchises just hire anyone to coach their teams? They have to have basketball knowledge! More than most of you!

  16. ncsufan13 12/30/2009 at 5:48 PM #

“Do you think that you know better than someone who has coached in the NBA? Do you think that NBA franchises just hire anyone to coach their teams? They have to basketball knowledge! More than most of you!”

Sports is a results oriented business. Something is wrong if you can’t get the job done. You can pontificate all you want about the knowledge and experience the coaches have, but that doesn’t mean anything when you can’t win any games. All the people who try to cover up poor performance by attacking the people who point it out are just shooting the messenger.

  17. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 12/30/2009 at 6:02 PM #

“Sports is a results oriented business. Something is wrong if you can’t get the job done”

This isn’t always true. Teams have been recycling the same coaches for years regardless of results. NC State basketball program hasn’t been a national force for the last 20 years.

If you think NC State will be able to replace Lowe with a big name I wish you would explain how. Sloan, Valvano, Robinson and Sendek were not national names before coming to NC State. Lowe at the least has some ‘street cred’, national championships and NBA experience. And he is recruiting better than most of the coaches in past did.

If State lets Lowe go who is the next guy? More than likely a mid-majors guy that may or may not win games and worse yet may or may not hate Duke and UNC.

  18. BassPacker 12/30/2009 at 7:05 PM #

Wolf, explain what I’ve posted is negative? Where did I say Lowe was doing a terrible job? Ok…I admit I never played beyond high school b’ball, never claimed to know better than you or Lowe. Don’t see how being a fan and understanding the game of basketball makes me ignorant just because I never played college ball.

I may have never played college ball but I still know the NBA game is different than college. Don’t like the NBA game. If asking in a forum for someone to explain Lowes sub patterns and timing, then yea, I’m ignorant. If asking here why so many official timeouts during homegames is occuring that seemingly kills momentum, then I guess I need someone who played college basketball to explain it to me, cause I’m ignorant but sure as heck not negative.

  19. TheWolf 12/30/2009 at 7:43 PM #

Also, Wood played more than any other starter from the beginning of the game until he got a break. You can look for Mays to be the first sub every game (for Javi). Depending on foul trouble, etc. you will probably see Howell in for Horner now. Davis will spell CJ and Degand will spell Wood. Sometimes Lowe will use Javi at the 2 guard while Mays is in there and since Degand is playing better he will more action at the 2 when either Javi or Mays is the point. Painter seems to be coming off the bench just for garbage minutes or foul trouble (since he provides absolutely NO OFFENSE). Vandenberg is geting more action depending on the situation. He provides shot blocking ability (but no offense). I do not know exactly what Sid is doing all of time, but I do see a pattern for the rotation according to the game conditions. I still believe that he is more than capable of running this team. Like I said earlier, it will take a total collapse next year for me to change my mind.

I just deleted two three entire posts because of unnecessary (and childish) personal attacks. I am simply not going to waste my time editing out the attacks and leave relevant points that might have been in the post.

It is unlikely that everyone is going to be happy with this basketball season or be content to WTNY (again). Don’t add to the unrest that is pretty much inevitable by stooping to personal/childish attacks on other posters.

  21. TheWolf 12/30/2009 at 7:51 PM #

VaWolf, is it neccessary to delete everything that I write. I apologized to Basspacker and you don’t even leave it up. Whats the deal?

  22. VaWolf82 12/30/2009 at 7:55 PM #

    Necessary? Probably not.

But I’m not going to waste time editing posts that contain personal attacks…I will just delete the entire post. (Other mods may react differently, I’m just talking for myself.) I expect to see alot of disagreements this year (just like last year) and I don’t want the blog or forums to drop down to the levels of the various other monkey boards.

  23. TheWolf 12/30/2009 at 7:56 PM #

Basspacker, I did apologize for going after you (keeps getting deleted). I am just frustrated with all the negative posts (they all run together) VaWolf keeps deleting what I write, so hopefully you will read this.

Florida in the RBC Center isn’t what we need to worry so much about. They aren’t good this year from what I’ve seen on tv, and I’ve seen ’em a lot. We SHOULD win this one. What we really should worry about are the next four ACC road games- FSU, Maryland, UVA and Georgia Tech, all winnable games which will probably set the tone for this season’s success or failure.

If we win half of those or at least look good and are competitive, then I’ll start listening more to those of you who are so convinced that we’re going in the right direction with our basketball program.

  25. wolfmanmat 12/30/2009 at 8:01 PM #

Yea, I agree with the “positive” posters. Alot of negativity surround Wolfpack athletics. IMO, this is why our program hasn’t advanced(companied with Lee Fowler). I’d like to see even half of our fan base get behind our coaches, not just the Wolfpack(yes, there’s a difference between support and $$). Really, fans have a HUGE impact on a program. Recruits read this stuff. If we united behind Sid we may see some kids consider NCState that otherwise wouldn’t. The negativity in Raleigh has definitly impacted our in-State recruiting. You see the top hometown kids flee to Duke/UNC/Wake even Kentucky(thanks John). Negativity has an adverse impact on our program. There is nothing more negative for “most” programs(I say most because whether we like it or not we are not a UNC/UCLA/Kentucky/Indiana type job, we are like “most” programs) than a coaching search. If we let Sid go we stand to lose another 4 years, just like we lost when Herb left.
