State can’t stay undefeated – can Farnold Degand get is *(#&$ together to help this team?

In relatively even match-ups on the hardwood, one can often point to a single statistic that makes a difference in a one-game battle. This pretty much describes NC State’s loss tonight at the RBC Center to the Northwestern Wildcats.

For the night, NC State shot a putrid 2 of 18 for 11% from the three-point line with Javi Gonzalez hitting the Wolfpack’s only two threes (2 of 6)

It doesn’t get any more simple than that.

The Wolfpack missed wide open looks…half contested looks…quick ball reversed looks…you name the look, the Wolfpack missed it.

Additionally, our (expected) weak guard play had a difficult time (1) creating opportunities for the offense against the Wildcat’s extended zone defense and (2) struggled to control Northwestern’s point guard, Michael Thompson who finished the night with 22 points and was able to easily create/convert drives for key buckets in the last five minutes of the game.

Tonight was a night when you could really see where Farnold Degand could help this team. His athleticism, length, quickness and shooting ability are all superior to those of Julius Mays. I love Julius Mays and appreciate his contributions to this team. But that doesn’t make my statement about Degand less true. Who knows the impact Degand could have had on both ends of the court if he was playing.

Boxscore

Again, it really doesn’t get any more simple than this.

The Wolfpack falls to a respectable 5-1 for the season, at least one game better than most fans expected at this point of the season. State has another important out of conference clash on Saturday at 3pm on the road at Marquette. The Golden Eagles are a surprising 6-1 to start the season, losing by one point to Florida State in the finals of the Old Spice Classic on Sunday. (Link)

Funny article. Anybody who thinks Degand will be a help is…well no need to be ugly. The fact someone mentioned Scott Wood in the same sentence as JJ Reddick during recruiting is laughable. We miss layups…frequently. Someone hit the nail on the head…Mays looks scared to death with the ball. Where were Painter Howell Frankenburg to help Smith to pound the ball inside. I mean, seems logical when we shoot like we’re blindfolded…we can’t outrun a team of slow goofy … AND i’m glad someone else noticed the lack of urgency in the last 4 minutes. Playing 5-7 feet off the ball on D, lollygagging bringing the ball up court…as is WE had the lead.

Wow, I know it’s early. Just hoping reality would be delayed a little longer. WE WILL HAVE A HARD TIME SCORING ALL YEAR….AND ALL THE HUSTLE IN THE WORLD IS NOT GOING TO HELP. I could tell when I went to the NO game Sunday, showed up bad tonight.

DID ANYBODY CATCH LOWE SAY “WOW” as he looked out on the court near the end as if he’d just walked up on a plane crash?

I liked that Lowe had Javi in the middle of the offense during the zone. Mays and Woods (should be the shooters) on the outside, get it to Javi at the top of the key / elbow, and let him work it into Smith and Horner or kick back out for an open look. Problem is Wood and Mays couldn’t get past lobbing it back and forth to each other. When they did get it to Javi, good things happened. We had good looks, just didn’t knock anything down from outside. Lowe had the proper scheme, but the guys didn’t (can’t in Mays’ case) execute.

A lot of guys forget about the offense and in-game adjustments Lowe made that first season. It was a breath of fresh air after 10 years of who know who. But it’s the preparation and motivation of players under Lowe that I question, not the in-game strategy.

Look, my argument against the coaching isn’t limited to a single game, but rather the product as a whole in Year 4.

I recall a talking point by Coach K that coaching takes place in practice in the form of fundamentals and game preperation, not during the game itself, where all you can really do is make minor adjustments to the gameplan.

We can’t even run a three-on-one fast break correctly, and I blame that on coaching.

    I can’t wait til baseball…wait…I can’t wait til footb….no wait…I can’t wait til…ummm. I love NC State.

I’m still amazed that so many folks still think Lowe will bring in all the top talent he’s recruiting. Last year at this time it was “Just WTNY when Wall and Brown are here.” Now it’s “Just WTNY when Leslie and Brown are here.”

NONE of those guys are here, and what indication is there that they’ll actually come here?

  7. packfan02 12/02/2009 at 12:07 AM #

I think a lot of people are overreacting after one game. I don’t see how anyone can try to blame the coaching staff for this game. Yes the D can be better, but you have to admit the effort is a lot better SO FAR this year. The team picked up the D in the second half. Also NW average 68 points per game and they only scored 65, so if looking at numbers our D kept NW below their team average (not by much but less then the team average). This game came down to one thing and one thing only, missing wide open shots, not coaching, not the scheme, but miss shots. State shot 11% from 3 range and around 30% overall, we just had an off shooting night.

  8. packfan02 12/02/2009 at 12:14 AM #

LRM I think you are one of the most bias posters on here. Most people are saying wait until Brown and Harrow get here and hope Leslie come. Brown and Harrow has signed so all signs point to them being here. So you have no argument about Sidney getting talent and yes talent does win games.

  9. LRM 12/02/2009 at 12:18 AM #

Ok, I’ll concede that talent will win games, but it won’t make Lowe a better coach. That’s my argument against him.

And Brown is at Hargrave, right? I understand this is not abnormal, but you don’t get credit for him until he’s here making a contribution.

  10. tvp1 12/02/2009 at 12:25 AM #

LRM: I’m not saying that Lowe shouldn’t be blasted for not bringing in better talent in year 4. That is his fault. I just didn’t see anything tonight that surprised me in that regard, so I don’t know why this game would set you off.

And as to “Lowe has proven that he cannot win, so the level of talent he brings in will not matter” – can’t agree with you there. We don’t know that Lowe will fail regardless of talent. I’m not the biggest Lowe supporter by any means, but in my view the biggest problem with Lowe’s teams has been a lack of talent in the backcourt, and frankly we don’t know what he’ll do with more than one decent guard on his roster.

  11. packfan02 12/02/2009 at 12:29 AM #

You are correct, you don’t get credit for him putting points on the board until he gets here, but that is not what you said. You said that Sidney can’t get the talent that he is recruiting, but the truth is he is landing top talent. So Sidney do get credit for getting commits and Brown has committed to State. I know what you are going to say, “He committed last year and he is not here”, Sidney cannot control that. But give Sidney credit for getting him to commit back to state. So with 3 highly ranked players committed to state you can see that you statement is false.

LRM: Fair enough, I’ll give Lowe credit for getting three highly-ranked players to commit to play for us (one of them twice).

  12. LRM 12/02/2009 at 12:30 AM #

“And frankly we don’t know what he’ll do with more than one decent guard on his roster.”

Ok, that’s a fair argument, I’ll give you that. But I’d much rather see what a proven coach could do with that same PG.

You know, it’s not necessarily tonight, but rather the fact that I got my hopes up again like I do at the beginning of every season but quickly realized it’s once again a lost cause. I should’ve known better.

  13. tvp1 12/02/2009 at 12:32 AM #

Continuing my glass 3/4 full posts about the game:

We forced 26% turnover rate, against a team that has done very well in taking care of the ball. Last year we forced a better than 20% TO rate 4 times all year. This year, we’ve already done it 5 times in 6 games. So clearly, at least that part of the defense has greatly improved.

  14. tvp1 12/02/2009 at 12:37 AM #

^^I hear you. My big picture view has always been that it’s pointless to even think about changing coaches until Fowler is gone. Once we bring in someone competent (cross fingers), we need to see immediate results from Lowe. For now though, we are pretty much stuck with him so I’ll continue to hope that he figures this out. Hence my tendency to avoid talking about the known negatives with this particular team. I’m not one of these “they just have to play hard and I’ll be happy” types…but playing hard is at least an improvement.

  15. PackerInRussia 12/02/2009 at 1:02 AM #

I didn’t see the game, so I can only go on stats. When two of your starters’ stat lines are filled with goose eggs (although Wood did have 2 blocks, 1 steal, 1 assist, and 4 boards to match 3 TO’s and 3 fouls in 32 minutes; can’t say the same about CJ whose line included 1 assist and 1 TO in 15 minutes) and your 6th man’s line is only marginally better (5 points, 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 TO) then you’re probably not going to beat a lot of teams. I’ll take improvement in effort and hustle, but it still takes points to win games unless you’re just absolutely shutting down a team. From the sound of the posts, this team is not able to do that. I hope that every loss is not followed by discussions of Brown & Co. I’m happy that they’re coming (or might be coming), but that has NO bearing on this year’s team and the games they play.

WE need someone desperately to help Tracy out down low. He got blocked 20 times, albeit some of those had to of been fouls. I wish Sid would try using Painter some more. He looks massive and with Tracy lacking the size I think he could step in and complement well. Maybe Howell too once he gets to be healthy. I’m not sure about Scott Wood. He shouldn’t start the next game. He brought nothing to the table. Missed every 3 he took and he turned it over. He was bringing nothing positive to the table. I wish Vandenberg could step in right away and be a helpful addition but it looks as if that is a work in progress for a couple of years down the road. But, good games out of Traccy and Javi for sure. Mays and CJ let us down miserably. Horner didn’t do much either.

Reality Check #1 is in the books.

3 more to come, outside of league play…

  18. 44fan 12/02/2009 at 6:12 AM #

You can talk about the players all you want and I will agree….but this has got to be one of the worse coached teams I have ever seen. The only year there has been any hussel, was Lowes first year…since then they run up and down the court like a NBA team. Watch teams like Duke and UNC, their teams WORK their butts off during the entire game…we look nothing like that and I’m afraid we never will.

  19. Wulfpack 12/02/2009 at 7:30 AM #

well at least they played hard….That’s pretty much what our standard has become. Maybe my use of the word “drilled” was wrong. How about “worked”? We were never really in it. NW seized control early and never looked back. Why? Because we couldn’t get a stop when we needed it, because we kept throwing it away, and because we couldn’t throw it in the ocean. Color me not impressed with the “effort”. This is basketball, fellas.

  20. wolfpackbball 12/02/2009 at 7:32 AM #

    LRM:
So nothing Lowe has done in his tenure here has suggested he could win? I seem to remember when Lowe first got here (albeit with Atsur here as well) I heard many comments about what a great X and O job he was doing. We were finally able to run plays and get good shots. Last night I saw us miss A LOT of shots, but I also saw some hustle and promise from some of the young guys that lead me to believe we will see some baketball being played again.

As an aside, didn’t I hear people constantly berate Lowe for not developing players? Now when Javi is obviously leaps and bounds ahead of where he began, (people called for his head literally) I read many positive comments about his hustle and overall game. Through this line of thinking, I’m not ready to pass judgement on the talent of CJ and Mays just yet, nor am I ready to pull Lowe from under last year’s bus just to throw him under it again.

  21. waxhaw 12/02/2009 at 7:50 AM #

Mays was terrible. He’s the only point guard I’ve ever seen that can’t dribble or pass.

He can shoot and drive but for some reason he didn’t drive that much last night. Mayb he’s too slow to penetrate against their guards.

Also, I thought Painter had his moments. When his defense picks up, he’s going to be a good player.

  22. Dr. BadgerPack 12/02/2009 at 8:49 AM #

My two cents for the day…

I don’t much care one way or the other if they call the game loose or tight… but the refs seemed to switch things up in the second half (for both teams). Year after year, it’s the same inconsistent officiating story. (Not related to game outcome…)

We had a bad situation with this game, namely 1 day to prep for their offense. It showed in the first half, especially with some of the younger players. Painter was abused on the backdoor (hehe) the whole time he was playing in the first half. I was impressed that the backdoor cut was basically taken away in the second half. Nice to see an adjustment.

I can see why their PG led the junior national team. He’s really freaking good, and it showed when he took over in the second half. Northwestern had to adjust when we began taking away backdoor cuts, and their answer was to throw the best player on the court at us. We won’t be the only team ‘he’ beats this year.

In the WTF department… was I the only one who said at about a dozen points “how the hell did he hit that shot”??? We forced a lot of bad, or at least tough, shots that managed to find the bottom of the net. Sheesh. That coupled with our horrific three point shooting should have spelled 20+ point blowout, and we STILL were within spitting distance.

Hey Scott Wood! You’ve been on national tv now. Loosen up man!

I like uptempo, but damn Javi. There’s a time to push the ball up the court, and a time to pull in the reins. Down 6 (I think) and on a 1-3 ‘break’ is not the time to push it.

Love the effort. The 40 minutes of effort. If that effort is given every night, this team will get better.

Finally, those of you in Raleigh need to step up and buy Vandenburg a cheeseburger. Or a steak. Or weightgain 4000 (BEEFCAKE!). He will be a good contributor with 15-20 more lbs. He’s not too shabby now. Good find.

  23. coach13 12/02/2009 at 9:11 AM #

I still think the cameras panning on Lowe and you see him mouth the word “wow” in disbelief was funny. Somebody had to see that besides me.

  24. TOB4PREZ 12/02/2009 at 9:15 AM #

1- some have said there was NO in game improvement/schematic changes, but I seem to remember their leading first half scorer being shutdown in the 2nd half…. i guess that just happened by itself, and was no indication of any changes made by Lowe.
2- Mays had no business trying to cover their PG, and Lowe was LATE in changing that duty over to Javi (it did happen, but not until Mays had been abused on several trips down court)
3- Wood needs to see a few jumpers go through the net to get his confidence up… he seems rushed or hesitant, but rarely catches and shoots in a smooth transition… this will change with time (he’s young)
4- the effort was there all night, but occassionaly they did get beat on backdoor cuts, that happens to even the best coached teams (i seem to remember us getting several backdoor looks against duke and unc-ch when Herb had us running the same picket fence offense.
5- I want to see MUCH more of Painter on the court as he hustles and brings it on the boards…. where was Howell??? he needs to find the court as well… these two will only make life easier for Tracy.
6- I’ve seen where some of you have questioned what Farnold could have possibly brought to the table (ie- not the same laterally since the knee injury)… well, what he brings is LENGTH, and still a burst that Julius simply does not possess…. if you don’t think Farnold would have made life harder for Thompson (their PG), then you’re in a deep mode of denial, because his length alone is going to scare a short PG like without question.
7- Sid needs to switch up our D with more regularity, and for some reason last night when he was motioning for the defenders to bring full court pressure, they were just hangin’ back and not bringing it… ????? not too sure about that one, Jason Williams mentioned they looked tired, and I realize that could be the case, having just played a game some 48 hours prior, but I don’t buy that excuse. Some added wind sprints in practice should cure that ailment.
8- I still think 8 wins is achievable in this watered down league this year.. if you haven’t seen UVA, MD, VT, and GT play yet, then perhaps you need to.
9- WTNY (tongue in cheek, but to those that contend Sid should be getting more out of these 2/3 star PGs.. I ask for EXAMPLES of other coaches in our league that get dominant PG play from less then top 50 recruits)… bring me examples or sit back down, your argument is beyond WEAK.. college hoops is a GUARD DOMINATED sport and one need look no further than unx’s early struggles to see this.. .their guard play is improving and so is their team, but their frontline was strong from day ONE, yet they struggled.
10- I WANT RICHARD HOWELL ON THE COURT!!!!! oh, and for Scott to find his stroke (he will, i’m sure of it)

  25. imawolf 12/02/2009 at 9:18 AM #

Cold shooting doomed this effort. A few shots in the basket and it would have been a different game. Missed layups, missed open looks are frustrating. One thing that did bother me greatly was the top of the key cross court passing. Their defense was all over this for most of the night and it resulted in quite a few turnovers for them. I watched some of the Wake and Heels games and they obviously run a totally different offense as their players are in tighter to the basket and they dribble toward the basket, they juke in and out and create opportunities. We seem to be just caught in way to much perimeter passing at the top of the key.
