The Lunatic Fringe “Only Cares About Beating Carolina”

The myth of State Fan only caring about beating UNC came back to life today in the News and Observer’s ACC Today blog, this time coming straight from an NC State fan’s mouth:

Inside Carolina editor Ben Sherman said that since September, UNC fans’ attention on his independent Tar Heels-devoted site has turned to their own team, which started 3-0, lost three of four and now has won four straight.

Before this season began, however, N.C. State fans who visited the Tar Heels message boards often threw down the 41-10 hammer.

“It was a decisive score,” Sherman said, “so it’s the leading argument.”

Nonetheless, N.C. State graduate Banks Talley of Raleigh said many of his fellow alumni believe too much emphasis is placed on the Wolfpack’s annual game against the Tar Heels. And yet Talley, whose wife Noelle graduated from North Carolina, called the 41-10 score “awesome” and admitted to a period of gloating afterward.

He will spend this weekend with a group of Tar Heels fans and joked that he might have to go canoeing to get away. As much as he wants another win over UNC, though, Talley would prefer a winning season to one win over State’s rival.

“The lunatic fringe of the State fan group only cares about beating Carolina,” Talley said, “and to me, there are bigger things than that.”

Even if that’s the case, there is nothing bigger than the N.C. State-UNC rivalry this week. Floyd said he started hearing about it minutes after a loss at Virginia Tech last week.

As he headed toward the tunnel, with his helmet and shoulder pads still on, N.C. State fans in the crowd in Blacksburg, Va., implored his team to “Beat Carolina.”

What Talley said certainly has a kernel of truth embedded in it, because in a few cases, some State fans do obsess a little too much on what our “Royal Blue” sister university is up to.  Me, I prefer to focus on what NC State is doing, and how NC State can get better.  It’s called worrying about your own game and letting the chips fall where they may when rivals clash.  Get good enough and you’ll be hard to beat, rival or not.

Still, I did get a loud, long laugh at the Inside Carolina guys assertation that State fans were over on their message boards taunting Carolina fans.  While what he said may strictly be true, what he doesn’t say is telling: Inside Carolina has a long and storied history of banning rival fans – some before they ever even post a single message, as was the case with my Scout.com account – and deleting messages willy-nilly.  What they do over there is beyond running a tight ship, they outright censor anyone whose opinion dissents from their party line of labeling NC State as a Cow College and UNC as Mecca, Nirvana and Heaven all rolled into one.  Free thinking is not the order of the day on Inside Carolina, and never has been.  They’d probably open re-education camps if they could, their moderators are just that sort.

A quick aside, one that many folks may not realize: did you know that Kenan Stadium was paid for by noted dairy farmer William R. Kenan Jr.? Kenan, Jr., an 1894 UNC graduate and grandson of one of UNC’s original trustees, got word of the initial plans and donated a large gift to build the stadium and an adjoining field house.  Kenan was a pioneering Scientific Dairy Farmer among other things. Remember that the next time you are taunted with the Cow College thing and point it out to them.

And then ask them how long they could go without eating.  They may deride NC State for having an outstanding agricultural school, but me, I am proud that NC State’s graduates and researchers are helping to put food on my family’s table, among many other wonderful and important things.

At this point, yes, it’s all about UNC. But then again, it is our last game of the season, so what else is there to think about?

Darn, that’s depressing. A win will by no means remove the sour taste from my mouth, but it will help.

There’s nothing wrong with thinking about beating Carolina. Not this week, not any week.

Thing is, as a State fan, I want to see NC State win championships, get positive national attention and be a major player in college sports. Beating UNC is a component of that, but so is beating Duke, Wake, Clemson, etc.

And don’t get the wrong idea, I don’t take the rivalry lightly and I damned sure want to beat UNC whenever State plays them in anything, anywhere. At the same time, it’s not the exclusive focus of my desires for NC State.

  3. PackMan97 11/25/2009 at 12:03 PM #

It’s not that the “lunatic fringe” only cares about beating Carolina, it’s that they are so despondent and depressed at the state of our athletics that beating Carolina is all we’ve got left.

It’s a symptom, not the problem.

    Alpha,

You hit it on the head at the end of your article. As my 92-year-old grandmother reminds me. Graduates from State actually do and build things, graduates from UNC only think about doing things. Which is more productive in and to the world?

Now she might be a little biased, having a son and grandson who graduated from State. The women did a good job educating us!!!

To say that a Wolfpack football season record of 1-XX-XX is acceptable to Wolfpackers if the UNC game is the only win is not accurate in my experience with Wolfpack sports. I, and the Wolfpackers I’ve known want to win every game/event in every sport in which the Wolfpack participates. But beating UNC in anything is a little more special even if the particular Wolfpack team/individual is undefeated. And in seasons such as this in Wolfpack football, a win over UNC would certainly have some redemptive value IMO.

Once again – folks in the MSM (if you want to call this that) – fail to grasp nuance.

There definitely are a handful of fans who only care about this.

However, for most of us – we see this game for what’s worth – our last chance to salvage a small kernel of enjoyment out of an utterly disappointing football season.

Now, how important is beating UNC-Ch? Pretty damn important. However, if you ask me the question – would you trade a loss to UNC this year for an ACC championship this year…Yes, I would.

Would I make that trade every year – Nope.

Here’s the reality – most of us are a little more sophisticated than to place our satisfaction w/ a season based on one game. However, the game is important – and there are times when the game takes on an increased importance. Quite frankly – this isn’t one of those “we HAVE to beat our rivals game.” Even if we win this game, the joy of it will likely have faded when I look back at the entire season. Will it make this season successful – nope. But will it make it 10Xs more enjoyable than it would have otherwise been? Yes.

I hate UNC. I hope we kill them tomorrow, even though that will not be the case. If we win, it’ll be a great feeling, but I’ll still be disappointed in our team being 5-7. I wouldn’t care if we lost every year to UNC if we went 10-1. I mean, it would sting that we weren’t beating them, but we would be 10-1 and on top of some leaderboard for something.

The Carolina-loving N&O found a State fan (that doesn’t know what he’s talking about) that would say what all Carolina fans want to believe: That all we care about is beating THEM.

I would say quite the opposite. The “lunatic fringe” wants State to be great in everything, against every opponent. We despise losing basketball games to teams like ECU and New Orleans. Beating Carolina doesn’t make a losing season acceptable. It gives us one moment of joy in an otherwise bad season.

I’d say it is NOT the true fans that only care about beating Carolina. Those are the “fans” that only care about having to face Carolina fans at work the following Monday. If that’s the only game they watch or care about, they’re not NC State fans at all. And they’re certainly NOT the lunatic fringe.

There is more to life or a season than just beating Carolina. But, I hope they arise for the game nonetheless.

The game has taken on a new meaning for me this week. In July one of my card playing buddies, also UNC fan, was bragging “we’re pre-season top 20”. I said, “big deal I’ll bet $20 right now that you won’t even be in the top 25 by years end”. After week 3 or 4, it looked to be a safe bet. Do I double him up with a point spread bet?

Oh well, it’ll be something to keep my interest level up, at least until they ring up 35 or 40 points or so on us. Come on defense kick ass for once in your life.

  10. ncsufan13 11/25/2009 at 2:00 PM #

Give me a break. If the N&O didn’t think it was important they wouldn’t be writing an article about it. That article is just some Carolina fan trying to rationalize why he gets so upset every time a state fan taunts him with last year’s score.

Rivalry is a two way street. Sure they love to come spray paint the free expression tunnel every time they beat us, but heaven forbid state fans celebrate a win over them with a little chalk. Every time we beat Carolina they go and declare that State isn’t a rival. It’ll be sweet to hear a new wave of excuses this year as the N&O has already kicked it off early.

Other than 2006, this has been the worst football season I can remember. Beating Carolina would not make it all better, but it would definitely be a positive ending to a terrible year. And let’s turn things around. UNC is 8-3 and headed to a bowl, but losing to State for the 3rd year in a row would make this a bad season in some baby blue fans eyes. The rivalry cuts both ways.

  12. blpack 11/25/2009 at 3:13 PM #

We need to win Saturday for a lot of reasons. It is our only focus at this point. I don’t think most fans only care about this game, but here we are at the end of the season and bragging rights is what we are all about. Maybe one year we can beat them and make the ACCCG, but that will have to wait. A win on Saturday helps a fix an otherwise bad season.

  13. Zen Wolf 11/25/2009 at 3:32 PM #

How do we beat Pitt and lay a crap the rest of the year.

  14. bradleyb123 11/25/2009 at 3:56 PM #

^^^ “A win on Saturday helps a fix an otherwise bad season.”

That’s kinda what this is all about. A win on Saturday doesn’t help fix anything. It feels good to beat an arch rival like Carolina, but that’s all. They think that’s all we care about. When we make comments like what you just said, it feeds their egos. We have to make sure they know that we ALWAYS want to beat them, but that beating them is not all we want. It’s one of the most minor of goals at the beginning of the season. At this point, it’s the only goal left to accomplish. But that doesn’t mean it is the only goal period.

  15. TOBtime 11/25/2009 at 5:15 PM #

No, it’s not only about beating unx. It’s jsut that when you have crappy years beating the media darlings is SOO much sweeter. That and the fact that they lord their basketball prowess over us as if we had nothing at all to do with the first 50 years of the ACC. Hence the “wait till basketball” comments when they do get their rears handed to them. Nor is that sour grapes. They decided to be the best in basketball and have pursued it with a vengeance. If only we would have done so in 1990…

^Grandma was right. I found out in the first 5 years after graduation it was much better to be productive than enlightened. Productive pays MUCH better. Most hole fans, graduates or Wal-mart, just give you a blank look if you use that one on them.

guys if we win we might have to endure another year of mike archer. i’m not sure they can make any excuse to keep him if he gives up another big number to one of the worst offenses in the ncaa…

i’m not saying, i’m just saying

Banks Talley can now be counted as a State Alum who is now senile and stupid!

What an absolute stupid thing to say! Bet he fishes with Foulup!

  18. graywolf 11/25/2009 at 10:33 PM #

30 years ago in 1979 we were conference champs in football. 30 years later we are 4-7 going into the Carolina game….a win against our rival is all we have left to hope for but truth be known, I think we will be 4-8 with a reversal of last years score.

  19. Primewolf 11/25/2009 at 10:37 PM #

My thoughts as I read the Banks Talley quote is that he is really a sheep derivative. Pathetic statement when he had a chance to sound halfway intelligent.

My next thought was that they sought him out for the article to make us look our usual bad in the N&O.

  20. LRM 11/25/2009 at 11:13 PM #

Sad part is we don’t even need the N&O to make us look bad. W’re perfectly capable of doing that on our own.

  21. GoneFishin 11/26/2009 at 12:21 AM #

Count me as part of the crowd that would love looking at a bigger picture and a national stage. Unfortunately as a fan, this is all we have left this year. If we can’t even get excited for a rivalry game, then there is nothing. They should be happy that people even give a crap about this game. That being said, having been a Wolfpack fan for 39 years and a graduate of State, I will not even watch this game this weekend. It’s beyond pathetic.

  22. El Lobo Loco! 11/26/2009 at 5:22 AM #

    I’m among the fringe lunatics!!!

National stage is closed after a relatively bad season, and at this point a win against Carolina would be a good end of season for fans and fund-raisers.
So this saturday is all about beating the baby-blue boys !

  23. EdMar 11/26/2009 at 9:38 AM #

    Good time for this discussion!

    – Am I happy that our Volleyball team finished the season at 8-27 and was an absolutely terrible 0-18 in the ACC going into the last game? NO

    – Am I happy that they won their last match against UNC? YES.

    – Would I rather be 17-1 and loose to UNC? YES

    – If you are terrible and are going to only win one ACC game, would the best one be UNC? YES

    – Would beating Carolina Saturday fix the season? NO, but it would make it easier to keep their fans (neighbors) from running their mouths about their bowl game, winning season, etc.

  24. Pack Mentality 11/26/2009 at 10:01 AM #

It’s not ALL about beating Carolina, but that is not a MINOR goal either. For example, I would rather be 3-9 with one of the wins against Carolina than 5-7 and have lost to them. But, the main goal is a successful season of 7 to 10 wins and that is more important than Carolina. But the season just isn’t as good if you did lose to them and I don’t give a damn what the N&O or the whine and cheese crowd think about the game.

The Lunatic Fringe in the Raleigh area will LOVE the Decade Of Champions insert in the today’s Thursday edition of the News & Observer.

Multiple team championships are noted for Duke and UNC, plus titles for the Durham Bulls, Wake Forest, Appalachian State, the Carolina Hurricanes, Barton, St. Aug’s, and a multitude of area high schools.

And NC State team titles? ZILCH. ZERO. NADA. NIL.

Happy Thanksgiving, Jed. Stuff THIS up your turkey!!!!!!!!!
