State Holds Off Terps, 38-31

The Wolfpack finally broke back into the win column in Carter-Finley this afternoon holding off the Maryland Terrapins, 38-31, in an ‘epic’ shootout for last place in the ACC Atlantic Division.

It was another game decided by trying to outscore the opponent, as State’s depleted and hapless defense once again struggled to keep the opposition off of the field. But the defense was not helped by offensive turnovers and special teams miscures.

Russell Wilson was 25-for-38 for 343 yards and threw for three touchdowns while running for another. The Pack stalwart overcame a career-worst three interceptions with touchdown tosses of 17 yards to George Bryan, 35 yards to Donald Bowens and 18 yards to Darrell Davis. Wilson and Jamelle Eugene each had 2-yard scoring runs.

But, all was not perfect for the Wolfpack who could not seem to pull away from the Terps despite multiple opportunities. In the N&O’s entry discussing State finally having a reason to celebrate, they share the following:

The Wolfpack (4-5, 1-4 ACC) still made plenty of mistakes against Maryland. Wilson threw three interceptions, including one that Alex Wujciak returned 70 yards for a touchdown.

N.C. State’s wide receivers dropped three passes that should have been caught for touchdowns. Donald Bowens fumbled a punt, and the Wolfpack kickoff coverage team couldn’t stop Torrey Smith on an 82-yard return for a touchdown.

But winning, finally, was cause for celebration.

“We certainly don’t do anything easy,” O’Brien said. “That’s a heck of a win for our football team to hang in there.”

Next up for the Pack is a home date with the Clemson Tigers, followed by a road trip to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech, before concluding their season against UNC-CH back in Carter-Finley.

The Wolfpack effort was great, the defense wasn’t, and the special teams were just awful. Why did we decide to go for it on 4th and 6 (resulting in a Maryland TD off an interception) when we could’ve had them backed up on their own 4?

I hope we can score at least 50 next Saturday.

I beg to differ, but the D allowed less than 300 yards of total offense. Special teams and an RW interception returned for a TD is what kept UMd in the game.

We will HAVE to score 50 next week if we are going to win. If we kick the ball to Spiller, someone should be fired. I would rather kick the ball out of bounds and let Clemson have the ball at the 40 than let Spiller return at least 2 kicks for TD’s.

I know we won and the defense allowed less than 300 yards. But folks, we played MD – the doormat of the conference. We have to beat Clemson, VT and the Tarholes to go bowling. I for one am not ready to make hotel reservations just yet.

Can’t you just lighten up and enjoy the win? The so-called “hapless defense” only gave up 17 points. Two scores were due to returns. They also stopped Maryland at the end of the game.

We won….it was definitely UGLY….but we won. The defense looked brilliant at times….then sometimes the guys looked like they were trying to BLOCK the ball carrier…rather than tackle him.

The outcome was never in doubt, especially after their QB went out….it just took a while.

The offense looked brilliant….then, less than brilliant. It reminded me of my 6 year old grandson’s soccer game when occassionally, a parent will yell to a child to run TOWARDS the goal.

Russell Wilson got the MVP by the WPSN and I believe that is justified. However, it looks like his “streak” is definitely over and that the laws of probability are catching up with him.

I made the comment when we picked off MD’s first pass from scrimage that TOB needed to send MD a thank you note for the “gift”. Later on, I commented that the team needed to reload and might run out of ammo (after shooting themselves in the foot numerous time).

As we were walking out, my wife commented that both teams handed the other MANY “gifts”. A win, as Jimmy V. said, is a win and goes in the “W” column.

TOB needs to critique the performance and work on corrective action next week. Clemson will be tough….to say the least. Maybe they will NOT take us seriously, as FSU has done in the past.

I, for one, am happy and will let it go at that. We overanalyzed last week….this time WRAL and Caldon Tutor got it right….I suppose if you keep picking the pack, they will eventually win. And we did, eventually, win today.

    GO PACK

I simply said that the Wolfpack defense wasn’t great, I didn’t say that it was bad. It probably would’ve been, though, had Maryland not lost its starting QB for the second half. That’s the real reason they got less than 300 yards. His replacement was awful.

Maryland had a ton of injuries in this game. I would not want to be in Ralph Fridgen’s shoes for the next 3 games.

  8. blpack 11/07/2009 at 9:17 PM #

This team is still very inconsistent, but at least we got the win today. We beat ourselves and made it closer than it should have been. Big tests the next two weeks and then the rivalry game is a toss up. Go Pack!

“Why did we decide to go for it on 4th and 6 (resulting in a Maryland TD off an interception) when we could’ve had them backed up on their own 4?”

Have you *seen* our defense? Granted they seemed to play better today (or maybe MD was just out of sync w/ backup QB), but thats not a bad gamble with RW. It blew up in our face, but I don’t think you could say it was a foolish risk.

Don’t be afraid to say this defense is bad, it is.

84- are you seriously still considering we have any chance at a bowl? And would you go?

In the old days a bowl bid was in recognition of a good year. Like life, a bowl bid today is just representative that you gave some kind of effort.

We’d have to play phenominal to win 1 of our last 3. You still pull for the Pack, but when do you face reality?

  11. Wulfpack 11/07/2009 at 9:59 PM #

We have NO business going to any bowl even IF we win out. That’s just crazy. Rewarding mediocrity, NCSU’s mantra.

I’m proud of the guys getting the win today. Always nice beating the Twerps.

  12. ldr of the pk 75 11/07/2009 at 10:08 PM #

It is a good win, we hadn’t beat the Terps in Raleigh in sometime. Even in good years, Md seems to be a team we have problems with.

  13. BJD95 11/07/2009 at 10:11 PM #

We’re not going to a bowl. The only team in the league we would have beaten today is Maryland. Thank God that’s who we played. And thank God a possible 0-8 mark is off the table.

  14. T-FIC 11/07/2009 at 11:06 PM #

I completely disagree Wulfpack, if we do win out with wins over Clemson, VT and UNC, we absolutely deserve to be in some sort of bowl. That would be starting the year horrible and finishing stronger than we have the past 2 years if we do actually win out.

  15. skippyjon jones 11/08/2009 at 12:05 AM #

Win out? Really? Have you seen this team this year? Enjoy the day and the next week. Take’em one at at time….

  16. hoop 11/08/2009 at 6:25 AM #

Did you guys watch the same game as I did? Our “hapless” defense held Maryland to ZERO points after two huge turnovers deep in Wolfpack territory, one from a dropped kick and the other from a Wilson interception. Our defense gave up 17 points this game, easily enough to win. Special teams continues to be more of an Achilles heel than defense.

And Wilson, as much as he has single handedly won games for us, threw THREE interceptions, one was a pic-6. We’ll need better special teams and a more accurate Wilson to beat our upcoming opponents.

Oh, and the last play of the game? A sack!

  17. Alpha Wolf 11/08/2009 at 8:54 AM #

Yes, the defense played well enough for a win, and yes, special teams were once again a major weakness that must be addressed ASAP.

Instead of looking too closely at this one, it’s fair to say that the team showed some resiliency and didn’t ever give up at any point in the game. They should gain some confidence, and that should help in their last three games.

  18. smile102 11/08/2009 at 8:55 AM #

MD scored 21 pts in 20 minutes, then lost their QB. MD has lost 7 of past 8 games. It was at home. A W is nice, but believing the season is now turned, the defense is now better and Clemson is toast is dreaming.

  19. TOB4PREZ 11/08/2009 at 9:03 AM #

Even after a win some of you can’t help but piss and moan…. that’s awful. Winning out would certainly be a pipedream, but NOT to enjoy a well deserved win by our team that fought hard is equally as asinine, if not more. To the victor go the spoils. Even TOB was more cautious at the end of the first half today, used his timeouts wisely, and was very clear and concise with his mgmt of the clock… this time it was Russell making a very bad decision that ultimately kept us from putting pts on the board. Guess what though, TOB didn’t mention it… in fact, in his post game interview he said the KO return for a TD ultimately boiled down to “bad coaching”…. but alas, this site would NEVER acknowledge these realities, as they don’t fit nicely into the “BLAME THE COACHING STAFF FOR EVERYTHING” mold that seems to drive this site. I can’t believe some of you even consider yourselves fans of the Pack. Enjoy the victory over the “worst team in the league” that just happened to beat Clemson.

If we win out we’ll be 4-4 in the league and 7-5 overall. I simply have a problem with ANY 7-5 team going bowling. This is in no way specific to NCSU, I just think the endless charade of “Who Cares” bowls is getting to be rather comical. Pretty soon, at this rate, colleges will be sponsors of their own bowls to ensure they “go bowling” each and every year. I’m fundamentally opposed to all of it.

    ^ for TOB4PREZ:

HIPP HIP HOOOORAY!!!!! HIP HIP HOOORAY!!! WE BEAT THE ALL MIGHTY MARYLAND TERRAPINS BY 7 AT HOME!!!

    WOOOOOOHHHHOOOOOOO!!!! LOOK OUT CLEMSON!!!!!!!

    I’M CERTAIN WE’LL DOMINATE THEM!

Agree that the defense, while infuriating at times, did their jobs today. They held the UMd offense to 17… I’ll take that ALL SEASON LONG.

If we throw a pick-6 and can’t cover kicks, I’m not pinning that on the D.

This game should’ve been a 25-point blowout… but in true “bad team” fashion, we did whatever was necessary to give our opponents a chance to win…

    ^ For the aliastroll

    Thanks!

Someone has to keep the beacon of optimism burning brightly while surrounded by all these doom and gloomers.

your sarcasm was not only lost on me, but pointed right back at you… thanks for the attention.

  24. Wufpacker 11/08/2009 at 3:10 PM #

^ His sarcasm wasn’t exactly “lost on [you]” if you noticed it and commented on it.

And in response to the earlier comment: “They held the UMd offense to 17… I’ll take that ALL SEASON LONG”. Yes, I would agree to that, though holding UMd to 17 does not necessarily equate to holding other teams to 17, but I get your point. If the defense could average giving up 17 pts/game we’d be a very nice 8-1 right now, or 7-2 at worst. Then again, if my aunt had a penis she’d be my uncle.

All you folks can bicker about whether our defense improved or whether UMd was just that much more inept than any other team we’ve faced so far. The sad truth is it doesn’t matter which is true (at least to a certain degree) because teams are always judged with respect to who they’ve played and beaten/lost to, at least to a degree.

Yeah, we won. Yeah, Maryland is probably the worst team in the conference (except maybe for us). We don’t know anything more than we knew before Saturday’s game, and we certainly shouldn’t be considered any better than the 2nd worst team in the conference after the win, same as before the game, same as if we’d lost.

Barring some unforseen massive turnaround in the performance of our defense, the Mike Archer deathspin has begun. The only questions are how long will it take to impact the ground, and whether or not TOB will choose to parachute out before impact or if he will choose to “go down with the ship” so to speak. I’m not convinced it matters to him either way at this point and that spells bad news, as usual, for NC State.

    We shall see.

  25. Wulfpack 11/08/2009 at 3:45 PM #

I don’t see the ACC as having that one dog of a team like we are accustomed to seeing with Duke for so many years. The way I see it this year is 4 good teams: GT, Clemson, Miami and VT. The rest pretty much stink. Maryland may or may not be the worst team. Same goes for us and I think you have to throw UVA in there as well. The real point is that, due to our October ineptitude, it doesn’t matter. One more loss and we are home for the holidays. I’m going to spend my x-mas on my couch watching a bunch of other schools have fun, all the while hoping Santa brings me a new Wolfpack defense to be unwrapped next Fall.
