Support SFN – Buy an Ad!

SFN has provided quality commentary on NC State Athletics for the better part of a decade. And along the way, it’s been a labor of love. There’s not a single person on the editorial board of SFN that accepts a salary. We all have day jobs and families and, when it comes down to it, we pay for the massive bandwidth bill to keep this site up and running. Pity party aside, SFN has a great opportunity to promote your business with advertisement spots on the site.

As you have probably noticed, there’s several “Advertise Here” banners on the site. Each of those represent a spot that you can buy. You can buy spots in increments of months at $200 for the top letterboard ad, $100 for the middle right 300×250 ad and $25 for the bottom 150×150 ads.

In the past 30 days, SFN has hosted over 300,000 pageviews!

This is a great way to get your business seen!

Here’s the proof:

SFNStats1

303,347 pageviews from 139,689 Visitors

SFNStats2

Obviously, our visitors are North Carolina-centric

The Triangle comprises over 50% of our in-state traffic

The Triangle comprises over 50% of our in-state traffic

This is obviously a great chance to be seen by fans of NC State who are in the Triangle market. If you have a business in the Triangle, be it a restaurant, a gym, a flowershop, etc, SFN is a great place to advertise your business and keep money within the NC State supporting community.

1/2 of the equation is actually purchasing the ad spots. The other half is the creative work in getting your ad created. The guys over at O3 Strategies can help out there. Shoot them an email at [email protected]. You’re also free to design your own creatives, click on the “Advertise Here” banner and upload your ads.

*NOTE: The impressions statistics provided on the link above are sampled only from midnight last night to current. Please don’t let those low numbers scare you. They will ramp up as they collect more data on the site. Reference the Google Analytics stats above for a more comprehensive view of SFN’s traffic.

I am for turning a dollar in todays economy. Question about your numbers. You state 139K visits with only 21% being new. That means 79% or 111K of the visits are the same people logging in or visiting to see if anything new is posted possibly multiple times a day. So my question is how many actual different people do you have visiting the site? In other words of 79% of the visitors that are not new, how many actual people does that represent? I think that would be a better number to look at for someone wanting to know how many actual prospects their ad would reach. I own a marketing company and may have some clients that may have an interest.

Over this same 30 day time period, the absolute unique visitors were 39,910. Some preliminary demographic charting of “who” these people actually are is dominated by the 25-35 year old male demographic with a college education and children.

To add: Taking a year sample, Oct 13, 2008 – Oct 13, 2009, We had 329,864 absolute unique visitors. So for a year long sting on SFN, you will be noticed at least once by 329,864 individual people, a vast majority of them based in North Carolina and a good majority of them being Triangle-based.

If it is an affluent, highly educated, NC State-oriented audience that you as a firm are seeking, this is one of the most cost-effective ad buys you can make.

May I add that because we have never generated revenue, we have never looked to ‘optimize’ and expand our readership. In short, we do what we do and our traffic is all ‘natural’ and genuine (for lack of a better term).

I think that if we were able to generate some revenue and expand our team and our strategy some, that we could leverage our position as an industry leader and national award winner and grow traffic in many different forms. We don’t ‘optimize’ on Google. We don’t seek alliances with other blogs. We don’t link related URLs on other message boards (both NC State and others). We just deliver and a lot of people come.

We’ll never whore ourselves; but, I think that we could be much more effective and efficient in optimizing traffic.

this looks like the NASCAR model.
    hood, rear deck, and in-car.
    more power to you.
    nothing but success.

    here’s what i know:
    advertising? at my
    company you don’t
    use that word.
    it’s the “A” word.
    if you know
    what i mean.

Thanks 300K+ different people in a year was the number I was looking for, that and that they are repeat visitors. 300K is a decent newspaper circulation and the over 3 minute visiting time was a good number. Means they will stay long enough to see the ad. I agree the demographics are strong for a good buying power base. I will pass this along. Thank you.

“at my company you don’t use that word.
it’s the “A” word. if you know what i mean.”

Data center servers and bandwidth are not free. Few people realize it, but that is paid for out-of-pocket by SFN. If anyone thinks anyone is getting rich running this site, I can show you some Colorado beachfront property I have for sale.

There are two choices here (actually three): 1) accept advertising or 2) move to a premium/subscription model. 3) I won’t mention.

Obviously, choice 2 is not the one anyone here wants to make. And let me be clear: it is not being planned, discussed or even contemplated. So it is that “a” word. I think that most readers here understand the need to generate site-supporting revenue and that it is a necessity for the continued growth of SFN.

Alpha Wolf said the word that is more dangerous than the “A” word… premium content.

ESPN does it as well as all the other sports sites. You know why? Because they’re finding it incredibly difficult to turn a profit with advertisements. Fortunately, SFN isn’t looking to rake in the cash, they’re simply looking to offset costs which should be achievable with ads.

  10. Alpha Wolf 10/15/2009 at 8:34 AM #

Indeed. All SFN is looking for is stability and the opportunity to grow even larger.

I really don’t think that advertising is bad. It’s actually good because it allows folks who want to communicate that they have a good product to reach out to an audience that indeed may be interested in finding out about that product.

Consider O3 – did many of us even know it existed and that it was alumni owned and that they do hella good work? I bet that answer is no. That’s why ads are a good thing. It is a win win for everyone.
