Lorenzo Brown posterizes two defenders

NC State basketball commitment Lorenzo Brown re-confirmed his commitment to the Wolfpack last week and followed up the commitment by posting a triple double in a scrimmage against Hargrave. Brown scored 26 points on 11 of 16 shooting while grabbing12 rebounds and distributing 11 assists. You can see about a minute and a half of ‘Brown-centric’ video from the game by clicking here.

One of Brown’s moves was the lead story at this website and can be seen below. You can also click here for our Tag archive of past Lorenzo Brown stories.

Heck…while we are showing videos we might as well share this amazing highlight reel of Ryan Harrow’s:

Thinkpack, I thing the mistake here is what does “pass” mean. If by “Which kids did we pass on” you mean which ones we “looked at and decided we didn’t want”, there are no specific examples probably.

But, by “pass” I think they mean that, looking out on the Div II landscape, or even the Div. I lower level teams, you can find a fair number of “under the radar” PG’s that are superior to the ones we have had for 3 years. These PG’s, it is assumed, would jump at a chance to play on Tobacco road rather than the PAC-10 or WAC, etc. Even with them, we wouldn’t be ACC champ caliber, but we should be dramatically better than we have been over the last 3 years.

This is not to say you don’t go after the top talent. But, have a backup plan when they don’t accept your offer. That seems to be where the problems lie.

It’s actually quite a simple concept and I wonder if the lack of understanding is willful.

Oh I understand the concept…but I don’t understand making the leap from not offering a kid that ends up being a great player to not having an eye for talent. It’s true…Eric Maynor and the Curry Boys would have loved to play on tobacco road. And I’ll even assume that any of them would have accepted an offer from State, AND I will give you they would have made our team better. BUT Coach K and Roy also passed on these kids…does that mean they don’t have an eye for talent? Could you imagine Eric Maynor or Seth Curry on a Duke team that has been plagued with not having an atheletic/scoring Point guard? All of a sudden that is a team that is competing for a National Championship. So Packplant I get the concept. But how can you fault Sid for not foreseeing these types of kids being great players, and at the same time not give him credit for spotting Ryan, CJ, John Wall, and Scott Wood early…with the reason being they haven’t played in a college game yet? So he is supposed to know a 5’11” 150 pound Stephan Curry is going to be a great player but we can’t assume that John Wall is going to be an impact player in the college ranks? Come on man! We all know that CJ and John are going to be good college players. We know Ryan is going to be good, I believe Wood will be good but I can see how that one is debatable. I agree, Sid may have a lot of learning to do. Hell he may have a lot of weaknesses, but an eye for talent isn’t one of them.

The argument isn’t that we haven’t had outstanding PG play. We haven’t even had serviceable PG play. Wasn’t Gavin Grant playing point a few games there? I’m not looking Sid to find the next hidden gem. If it was easy, they wouldn’t be hidden surprises. But a serviceable PG would be great, and the lack of one is a valid criticism of Lowe.

It’s not that he didn’t spot the next hidden great player. Few do ahead of time. But, the ones HE recruited have not been up to the job yet.

Wasn’t that year 1 when GG played PG? Atsur went down and we had the “six pack”? Hard to fault Sid on that one.

I know the argument, I simply picked those three because they are the only ones I know for a fact are better than our guys (Don’t have a lot of mid major kids in the memory bank), and would have probably come here if offered…cooldrip didn’t offer me anyone so I went with those guys. Mays and Javi will prove to be very “serviceable”. Look at any PG in the last few years that you would describe as serviceable…I’m sure they had freshman years like Mays and 2nd years like Javi. They are underclassmen but there were times last year when they were our best players on the floor. There are great point guards who come in as freshman and are solid players Ryan and Lo will be those kind of guys. There are guys who are not as gift who will grow into solid players Mays and Javi are those guys. This year will tell the tale.

Are you folks suggesting that most mid-major PG’s would come in and be serviceable starting against ACC pressure as a freshman? Or even sophomore? That seems like quite a stretch.
