NC State head coach Tom O’Brien announced today that redshirt junior safety Javon Walker will have to take a medical redshirt because of persistent knee injuries.

“Javon is out and his career is over,” said O’Brien following his Monday press conference. “He’s going to have knee surgery and will take a medical. He met with the doctors… he could have helped us a lot. It’s tough for him, but it’s the right choice.”

Walker made four starts as a redshirt freshman in 2007, totaling 46 tackles and two pass breakups before injuring his knee in the game against Miami. He would miss the rest of the season was sidelined again in 2008 after needing another.

The latest setback will result in his third sugery in two seasons.

He will be placed on medical hardship and continue to pursue his degree at NC State.

The official loss of Walker only makes the Wolfpack younger on the depth chart in the secondary. This is tough news for any kid. God bless him.

That is a bummer. He really had a bright future and could have been a lynchpin in our secondary.

Hope he recuperates well and gets his degree. Good luck Javon.

I hate to see this, but I do wish him well.

    We certainly could use him.

Hopefully he’ll get a degree and a great job where they say “we certainly could use him.” Good luck in studies and career, Javon!

I suspect there may be a blog entry about this forthcoming in the near future but TOB’s comments in the N&O this morning regarding the D are rather…striking. Basically that we have the right coaches and schemes but that we don’t have the right players or they aren’t executing properly. A bit later he throws the players completely under the bus in a fashion that would make even HS and Sid cringe. While TOB may believe every word he uttered during the press conference they are still disappointing on many fronts. To the extent that he is under pressure and losing support his comments certainly will not help him with many fans.

As to the original topic, it strikes me as odd that a torn ACL is a career ending injury for a top flight athlete at a BCS school in this day and age. I know there have been some hints as to concerns with our team docs and medical staff in the past. A case like Walker makes me wonder if the injury was so severe that this was inevitable or if perhaps there was a botched surgery (or 2) or maybe an ill conceived rehab plan. At any rate, I hate this for Walker.

I just loved seeing him on campus in his maroon velor tack suit.
