ACC in the NFL

We started a thread on the message boards this weekend based on the final weekend of NFL cuts. Today, the N&O provides their annual look at the “ACC in the NFL”.

Today, NC State ranks 9th in the ACC with 19 former players currently on NFL rosters. As a point of reference, in October of 2006 NC State ranked 6th in the ACC with 20 in the NFL.

N.C. State (19)
Andre Brown, RB, N.Y. Giants
Brian Clark, WR, Tampa Bay
Jerricho Cotchery, WR, N.Y. Jets
Leroy Harris, G, Tennessee
Steven Hauschka, K, Baltimore
Anthony Hill, TE, Houston
Torry Holt, WR, Jacksonville
Marcus Hudson, CB, San Francisco
Scott Kooistra, G, Cincinnati
Manny Lawson, LB, San Francisco
Sean Locklear, T, Seattle
John McCargo, DT, Buffalo
DaJuan Morgan, S, Kansas City
Philip Rivers, QB, San Diego
Stephen Tulloch, LB, Tennessee
Tank Tyler, DT, Kansas City
Brian Williams, CB, Atlanta
Mario Williams, DE, Houston
Adrian Wilson, S, Arizona

* DeMario Pressley has been signed to the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad.

It is amazing to me that Clemson is tied for 10th in the ACC with only 14 former players currently on NFL rosters.

A few where did they go questions….

Terrence Holt? when did he get dropped?
K-Rob? I guess his comeback is over?

I don’t think Holt even played last year. He was signed by the Panthers and then didn’t make the squad coming out of training camp.

Robinson is playing with the Florida Tuskers in the new UFL.

I would guess that if he stays healthy and is in shape, he could be one of those guys signed mid-season if someone loses a kick returner.

^ It would never happen but K-Rob could fit in with the Panthers at WR right now.

Doing a little poking around, it appears that Robinson has a chronic knee condition now. So, a return to the NFL might not be happening.

Yes, Terrance Holt was cut from the Panthers last year, but ended up playing two games with the Saints (logging 1 assisted tackle) and iirc finished the season on the Bears payroll. He is not listed as an active player for ’09.

To me this is also telling of the NC State coaches that we’ve had. If you look at the MOC era players (granted they’d have to have really stuck in the league at this point), you’re going to see offense for the most part. If I think back to MOC, any big game win was almost always a shoot out.

If you look at the Amato players, outside of Rivers and members of that nasty Gator Bowl OL (the best I’d ever seen at NC State), you’ll see defensive players. You’ll also notice how as we moved on in Amato’s era, predominately defensive players appear on the list. That coincides with what I remember — that after Rivers the offense went to pot.

If you look at TOB, you can tell that he’s not inherited a ton and the talent he did inherit was banged up quite a bit (Hill and Brown). He did go and find a nice kicker though. My guess is that over the next 4-5 years if TOB stays around, we’ll see OL, QBs predominately and potentially a smattering of DL/S/LB and kickers appearing.
